Wikipedia talk:Featured articles/Image survey
"every featured article has at least one free content image"
editWhat about articles where no free image exists (or at least we are unable to find one)? Will any fair use images be acceptable at all in featured articles? And in the case where there are no free images, is it acceptable to have an article with no images and still be considered FA quality? --Milo H Minderbinder 19:15, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Every FA having at least one free image is a goal, not a requirement (not yet anyway). Fair use images can be used provided fair use guidelines are carefully followed, which this survey is intended to address. It is also important to survey exactly how they are being used (in critical comment or just in illustration) because the guidelines might change in the future.--Pharos 19:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- What sort of free images can be created for articles about copyrighted works like books, songs, and albums? ShadowHalo 08:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well, one would have to be creative. For example, one might have an image of something that inspired the book/song/album (say, the rolling hills outside the author's hometown, or in the easiest case, historical fiction). For some science fiction and fantasy literature, a diagram might be helpful. If nothing else, we could use a free image of the author. I'm not saying this would be possible in every case; remember it's a goal, not a requirement.--Pharos 17:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

A currently stated, such a rule would disqualify articles based upon books published after the 1923 US public domain cut-off date from being considered for FA. 23skidoo 12:50, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Please read the above discussion, and you'll see (1) it's a goal, not a rule, and (2) there are some more creative ways of illustrating articles about copyrighted works. Give me a good example, and I bet I could think of way to illustrate whatever book you may have in mind.--Pharos 18:58, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
