Hi, y'all...I've constructed a Wikipedia ad for WP:HAU. If anyone would like to improve on it, let's see your suggestion here. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 15:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I like it but the font looks a little jaggy... not sure if that can be touched up? (graphics are not my area of expertise). xenocidic (talk) 15:24, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Can you please make clicking on the template link to WP:HAU? Captain panda 15:25, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's looking good. Linking to HAU directly would be a great addition, though. Useight (talk) 15:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Good observation about the bad link...I'll go do some investigating and see if I can't fix that. As far as jaggediness, I guess that just reflects the graphics design skill of this project's members. I painted it using MS Paint in Windows XP. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 15:53, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Fixed the linking problem. We'll have to deal with rough edges on the text until a graphics design person joins the team. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 16:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
I found a graphics request page and posted this, asking for a touchup. Kind of funny, we HAUs have to ask for help. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 16:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, the irony. Although we do have quite a few HAUs that list "Images" as one of their specialties, I'm sure one of them could've enhanced it had they seen this thread. Useight (talk) 16:40, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, my image "specialty" is with a camera. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 20:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Mine is image usage rights. Perhaps there's a better way to say all this in our listing? I mean, obviously there are at least three types of image specialization. Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 15:02, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't know if we can break up the "Images" column into several, the table is has already gotten pretty wide. Useight (talk) 15:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Have some input on the design here: Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve#Image:Qxz-ad146.GIF Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 15:21, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

R.I.P. SoxBot V, we hardly knew you (StatusBot disabled)

FYI, SoxBot V, the status bot responsible for maintaining our statuses has been indefinitely blocked, we'll have to consider a new method (manual updates) or remove the status indicators. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 20:17, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Talk about bizarre. Enigma message 20:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
The status indicator is, in my opinion, one of the most critical elements of the page, we can't just do away with it. Useight (talk) 22:16, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I agree, but unless everyone is willing to begin manual updates, there's not much we can do as the statusbot was blocked by the developer/sysadmin team. Perhaps request the developers create a way to calcuate based on a user's last edit, then {{Truestatus}} could be modified to perform the calculation based on that. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 22:18, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, apparently the bot topped 50,000 edits and was hogging too much bandwith. According to User:SoxBot V, we can't even run a clone of it. Useight (talk) 22:20, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I imagined something of the sort would happen. Time to reinstate the old time charts again? bibliomaniac15 22:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
That's a possibility, but then we lose the "speciality columns". Seems we're going to have a hard time having the best of both worlds. Useight (talk) 22:26, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
No, we don't need to lose them. All you do is just put up the times you're available, UTC and/or local, flat out. No need for all the checkmarks, really.

← For those that run their own status indicators, we could tie it to that, for others I suppose we could just put "Unknown" or link to their contribs, or something like that. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 22:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Personally, I hated SoxBot V's guts and would have blocked it myself if I were an admin (am I joking? :-O Dun Dun Dun!!!) but I'm confused here. What exactly happened to the poor bastard that got it blocked?--KojiDude (C) 23:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Take a look at User:SoxBot V. We used it. That's what got it blocked. I guess it was actually my fault; I'm the one who determined that it would update our status' and implemented its use for a couple hundred people. All the constant updating apparently put too much of a strain on the servers. Useight (talk) 23:15, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I"m trying to see here if a workaround could be implemented that doesn't require a bot. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I told you guys that Bot was no good! It was trouble, I tolds ya! But no one listened. Like in I Robot where Will Smith is the only one who can tell the robots are crazy.--KojiDude (C) 23:32, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, I don't think Irobot is the same as a bot. Anyway, I think User:Persian Poet Gal uses a status that links to her contribs. I don't know if it is updated by a bot or manually. Should we ask her? -- RyRy5 (talk) 23:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
From the looks of it, her status indicator was using StatusBot, just like the rest of us. It simply provided a link to her contribs so people could double check, I suppose. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
[1] It looks more like she updated hers manually.--KojiDude (C) 23:43, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Look deeper, noble sir. SoxBot V was updating her StatusBot page until it received a thorough pwning from the devs. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 23:45, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh, my bad. Sorry.--KojiDude (C) 23:51, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, we need something that updates HAU automatically that isn't a bot. We can't have users update HAU automatically. --RyRy5 (talk) 23:53, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Not all users on HAU have an IRC client. So how will they log/log out if they don't have an IRC client? --RyRy5 (talk) 00:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
I'll see about coding a {{#lastedit:}} parserfunction, and getting it in the main code. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 00:17, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
As always Cobi, you rock. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 00:19, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Update: Patch is in bugzilla (bugzilla:14384), waiting for a dev to review it and commit it to the SVN. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 02:22, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Pwnage dude. You might want to chime in at my VPT request for this. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 02:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
That right there is pretty sweet. Enigma message 05:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Another update: The bugzilla request has been closed as WONTFIX by the devs. They suggested using javascript (like something in the site-wide JS) or writing an extension. According to the devs, a parser function would be lagged, as it would be cached in the parser cache for either: 1) 2 weeks, 2) until the page was purged, or 3) until the page was edited. I will look into writing an extension if one is not already available in a few days if no other solution has presented itself, but writing an extension will be more complex than a simple patch that I thought this would be. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 12:50, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Interim workaround

In the interim, you can use the Qui monobook script written by TheDJ to update your status at the click of a button. It will create your status in Special:Mypage/Status, therefore, you should update your User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME to transclude this page as follows: {{User:USERNAME/Status}}. Any questions, let me know. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 15:55, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I tested it out. It's not compatible with Internet Explorer. Useight (talk) 16:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
No doubt. People shouldn't be using that train wreck of a browser anyway. ;> Firefox 4tw! (Yes I understand some have no choice... we can wait for Cobi's bugzilla to be implemented or you can use Hersford's workaround - User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate which uses the same page location for status) xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 16:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh I have a choice alright. I just don't want to have two browsers taking up hard drive space when I only need one. And, yes, I'm a computer guy, I built my own PC and it has 1.1 terabytes of capacity. I use IE6 to avoid tabbed browsing. Useight (talk) 16:18, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Strange! I used to be an IE guy myself, but after seeing how poorly it renders a lot of stuff (especially IE6, I was helping a user with an IE6 problem the other day) I'm Firefox for life now. Also because of all the custom scripts available. but this is neither the time nor place for that debate. If you need help setting up Hersfold's implementation, let me know. xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 16:20, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Of course IE6 will render incorrectly. IE7 has been out since 2006, and webpages have been updated. Why haven't they upgraded? BTW, I use Firefox for WP (so I can revert vandalism) and IE7 for everything else. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 13:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
You can see one reason that people may not have "upgraded" in my comment just above this one. Useight (talk) 16:38, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Mistake

There seems to be a mistake on the Europe page, Cyclonenim has been listed as a admin when actually he/she's a rollback. I didn't like to edit it without asking. Harland1 (t/c) 20:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Go for it. xenocidic (talk) 20:45, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I made the fix. Useight (talk) 20:47, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Add AWB to maintenance section

Can we/I add AWB to the 'maintenance' section, as I'm tagged under maintenance but don't use any of the other tools/projects listed? Thanks Rjwilmsi 22:50, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Go for it. xenocidic (talk) 22:53, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I've made the change. Thanks Rjwilmsi 06:48, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
