Template Requests

edit

It would be appreciated if someone could make a set of templates for the Kazoo. It's an instrument that practically anyone can play. kallemax 20:18, 12 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Done - Rooivalk 02:38, 26 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Could someone make a "This user hates the (instrument), but can play it at the (etc.) level anyways.", please? or something similar. Thanks.

(edit)changed my mind, crossed out what sounded stupid.22:48, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

--Tomfulton 00:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I know this is pathetically pedantic, but the kazoo is technically a membranophone; Rather than create another category, I've moved it to "woodwind" as it's more like a woodwind instrument than a brass one :) -- Djbb2 02:29, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

A set of templates for Bass clarinet would be sweet. Shploo

A set of templates for specific saxophones (i.e. Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, ect.) would be good too.Unionhawk (talk) 20:32, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is it possible to add templates for church bells or for change ringing? If not, can someone point me to the instructions for setting up the templates myself. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:33, 1 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've created . Feel free to use it or improve it. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:43, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

TfD debate

This template survived a debate at TfD. The discussion can be found here. -Splashtalk 17:37, 20 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Composition

edit

Is there a template if someone is doing composition?

Composition is not itself a playable instrument, and does not really belong within the instruments category. Perhaps in another category or on its own. --TheKMan 06:03, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I just saw on the main userbox page that there is one for composition. Look here Wikipedia:Userboxes#Musical_Instruments — TheKMantalk 02:23, 15 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Viol

edit

Viol needs to have the categories changed from the viol prefix to vdg, if it is to be compatible with the instrument template. (or change the template names. changing the categories may have less of an impact.) — TheKMantalk 07:00, 17 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion

edit

Why not have a category on the instrument Triangle? J.J.Sagnella 20:28, 18 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes, why not? Done. Ddawson 11:07, 25 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bass Trombone

edit

I have noticed in the past year or so since I have become one that bass trombonists usually seperate themselves from tenor trombonists. Since there are different templates for bass guitar and guitar, why not bass trombone and trombone? That would be so awesome.schyler 06:43, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Interesting developments

edit

In my absence from Wikipedia (enforced by the demands of an airliner design project in uni which has taken over my life) there seem to have been some fairly drastic developments on the userboxes front. I'm grateful to User:Ddawson to taking on my fledgling Instruments project and both improving the template system and increasing its momentum.

It seems, however, that somewhere along the way a whole Userbox movement has evolved and has even attracted several comments from Jimbo Wales. A lot of people seem to have jumped on the Userboxes-as-bumper-stickers bandwagon, a development which I'm not convinced is healthy.

The reason I stopped displaying my own instrument templates on my user page was that I was discouraged by the comments I received from others about templates for instruments and other skills not being encyclopaedic. I argued to the contrary and it is interesting to read the eventual TfD entry for this page where there seems to have been unanimous agreement to Keep. I sort of wish I'd been around to join in :)

Anyway, my point is basically that I'm glad the Babel-spinoff Instruments template system has taken off and that people seem to think it's A Good Idea. I just hope I'm not indirectly responsible for the political/religious/POV/advocacy/etc. craziness that seems to have happened when I was away! Hopefully the project is helping to make a better encyclopaedia, as was my intention from the start. - Yummifruitbat 00:59, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree that instrument templates should be kept, and don't even agree that they are useless for encyclopedic content. For example, I've played guitar for more than a year, and have no idea about what a bohdrán is, therefore I'm much more likely, and capable, to edit an article related to guitars than one related to bohdráns. --Army1987 09:18, 26 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also agree that user instrument templates should be kept to back up encyclopedic content. If I edit a page on Ancient Chalumeaux, my contribution may have a different weight with readers & editors if I am a professional clarinetist. D A Patriarche (talk) 02:08, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Policy on ID boxes

edit

I was wondering if there was a policy on whether the ID boxes of the userboxes should or should not have pictures of the actual instrument instead of the code (i.e., having a picture of a piano instead of pno-2). Thanks.--Methegreat 22:49, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree - it would be quite easy to make an ID box made up of a picture of the instrument with the relevant number in front of it. The only problem would be finding pictures for all the instruments in the list! Any volunteers? -- Djbb2 02:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I checked them all and the only instruments without an image to go with them are Fortepiano, Tangent Piano, Front Ensemble, Keyboard Percussion, Vibraphone, Psaltery, and Air Guitar. One other problem this idea presents is that most of the woodwind instruments are much longer than they are wide and would not fit in a square unless they were cropped, or made very small.--Methegreat 19:51, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Skill level?

edit

There are people who play musical instruments in ways that have nothing to do with the rigid hierarcy imposed by the the skill level system. Can userboxes be added to each of these categories that do not impose a number rating to how accomplished one is or is not at playing an instrument? Morganfitzp 00:26, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

In addition, how do I determine what skill level I am at?

Deletion discussion

edit

At Wikipedia:User categories for discussion#Instrument debabelization, Mike Selinker (talk · contribs) has proposed "Instrument debabelization", which would involve removing the skill level categories (keeping the larger instrumentation supercategories, and keeping the skill level userboxes). If you have an opinion on this topic, please contribute to the discussion at the link above. Powers T 16:09, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Also, I've modified the proposal to have a "novice (player)" category as well as a global category, to allow people to self-select by interest even if they don't feel they have enough proficiency to record samples and such.--Mike Selinker 19:49, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • The vote has been closed as keep, which means CFDU is OK with the Babel system for instruments (at least categories 1-4), as well as languages and computer languages. Just thought folks would like to know.--Mike Selinker 02:31, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of skill-level categories?

edit

At Template_talk:User_instrument#Confused, I raise the question of why some of the skill-level categories have been deleted. Not much response. Anyone available to explain? Powers T 14:38, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Double Redirects

edit

These all need to be speedied, I don't have the time. They are part of the poorly copied template user instrument box, the original template being Music which was moved to User Instruments List. There is absolutely no need for them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sox207 (talkcontribs) 17:08, September 16, 2007

Category/PAGENAME fix

edit

I believe this was suggested a while ago at the template talk page but I don't think it was ever implemented. Right now (as far as I can tell), all users who place an instrument userbox on their user page get categorized under the letter "U", for "User:". I know how to fix this for plain userboxes, so that users are categorized alphabetically according to their username:

<includeonly>{}</includeonly>

-- but the fix is probably much more complex for a template like this and besides which the page is protected. Can an admin please look into this? It's frustrating to look at the categories only to see everyone showing up under "U". Thanks.

Electric guitar

edit

There´s surprisingly no userbox for people playing E-guitar. So could someone create a userbox for people playing this instrument? Dagadt (talk) 16:35, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Classical Guitar

edit

As with Electric guitar, there should be a separate box for Classical Guitar vs. folk & other steel-string acoustic guitars - both the instruments and techniques are quite different. D A Patriarche (talk) 01:32, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Moving this page

edit

I would expect Wikipedia:Instruments to contain something other than userboxes - an instrument notability guideline, perhaps, or a description of a set of instruments to be used for performing an action.

Would anyone object to moving this to a subpage of Wikipedia:Userboxes, userfying it, or merging it somewhere else? My first thought was to set up an MFD but I now see that this was the wrong course of action. Brilliantine (talk) 04:34, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kabardian

edit

Kabardian and keyboardists use the same acronym kbd; at first I thought it was a joke. "This user is a native speaker of keyboardian", but no, since kabardian is using an ISO code, I suggest you move keyboards from kbd to key or something else.--DasRakel (talk) 17:51, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why is there no cornet userbox?

edit

I see that trumpeters have their own set of userboxes, though I will pass on any rude comments about such favoritism. I'd like to propose something for those of us who play cornet, such as: {{userbox-level | level = | id = | info = This user plays the Cornet. | usercategory = Wikipedian cornet players | nocat = {} }}<noinclude> </noinclude> Trilobitealive (talk) 03:08, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Guitar

edit

There seems to be an inconsistency in coding for guitar: other instruments use the short code, so this should logically use gtr. E.g.: "pno-2" displays correctly but "gtr-1" gives red error and has to be coded "guitar-1", but actually displays gtr-1 in the box. D A Patriarche (talk) 01:51, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

@D A Patriarche: Dear Tony,
I have seen your comment above and, although I am no expert on how it all works under the covers, I have set up a few of those recently (for the 'hurdy-gurdy' and the 'tres'), by adapting an existing set ('banjo') of userboxes and associated templates for categories and subcategories. It worked so well that I felt confident enough to fix a few more sets that were incomplete in that they were missing the categories and subcategories for some of the skill levels.
I therefore looked at the 'guitar' set. The templates for the skill level '-1' seem consistent with the coding of other instruments that use the short instrument code. However, the coding of the category template for the main userbox ('This user plays the guitar') is different from the equivalent category template of other instruments ('This user plays the (whatever)') I have used before and that might well be important, but I don't know enough about the internals to be able to conclude whether it's the cause of what you observed.
Therefore, please may I suggest that you consider contacting the Help Desk (which is what I would do at this stage), by entering your question here? Someone more expert than I might therefore be able to shed some light on this.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be of any real help; I'll keep an eye on this section here, though, in hopes that I'll be able to learn from the answer too!
With kind regards for now;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee. (talk) 15:56, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Flumpet

edit

Should we include certain hybrids, such as the flumpet in their own userboxes? I'm not sure, as the flumpet doesn't seem to be very widespread in usage. I'm also making a set of userboxes for flugelhorn players, as well as cornet players. Supertoastfairy(Talk) 16:29, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Help with creating userbox

edit

Hi, I've created Template:User kalimba but I have no idea how to properly make a category page for those who have it on their userpage. Where is the so-called "instrument-code" list that I can add "Kal" to? Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Instruments/Adding is a redlink, so I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.
