Template:Userbox sample compact

edit

{{Userbox sample compact}} used on wp:userboxes#Userbox sampling templates was deleted. Is there an alternative or should that section be deleted? Thank you Adakiko (talk) 23:00, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Standardized documentation

edit

On a quick search, I'm not seeing any {{Userbox documentation}} template providing a standardized documentation for user boxes. This seems like something that should exist and be used. Sdkbtalk 18:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I can make that. Would you like me to start it? thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 21:27, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@TheTechie, sure, feel free to! Rolling it out widely may be the more significant challenge. Sdkbtalk 21:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sdkb I now have a skeleton of a documentation. You (or anyone else watching this page) is free to improve it, and give feedback on the template talk page. thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 01:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I mean, I'd start by using {{Documentation}} in it... Sdkbtalk 04:12, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
FYI, there are also shared documentation templates {{Userbox/categories}} and {{Userbox/citydoc}}. —andrybak (talk) 17:55, 5 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Creating large userboxes

edit

I want my userpage to be only userboxes scaled up in a 2 column grid that takes up the entire width of the article. Currently I use a CSS hack using the scale property to achieve this. Unfortunately, it fails to take into account smaller resolutions entirely. Any Wikitext-smiths have a solution to my (frivolous) problem? -1ctinus📝🗨 01:53, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

User:1ctinus, to avoid the blurriness, you're going to have to re-implement all the userboxes with Template:Userbox-w.
Scaled + CSS hacks, blurred

Userbox-w, not blurred

Thank you for the template recommendation. Is there a way to run a find/replace for tables? the String replace invoke methods failed for me. -1ctinus📝🗨 23:29, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I finally figured out the solution, and it's really dumb. To make the replace work, I had to turn it into an HTML table, and to replace, I added these extremely hacky lines:
{{#invoke:String|replace|{{#invoke:String|replace|{{#invoke:String|replace|(stuff)|width:238px|width:476px}}|45px|90px}}|font-size:8pt|font-size:16pt}}
If this isn't a hack I don't know what is, but it's working really well (except for small images) -1ctinus📝🗨 00:21, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Centralize Userboxes

edit

I had an idea, why not centralize all userboxes using "Userbox:" or "UB:"(Just like Wikipedia: or User:) and put the entire Userbox database to organize it a little. I made a simple Userbox: website for this idea And will make this my #1 priority (if you like it) Userbox:Hoster

Update wording of "Cautions about image use"

edit

The wording of the WP:UBX#Caution about image use subsection probably should be tweaked because fair use on Wikipedia is better referred to as non-free content because Wikipedia's non-free content use policy is actually more restrictive than fair use by design, and it's because of the this policy (WP:NFCC#9) that non-free images aren't allowed to be used in userboxes. You could actually argue that such a use would be allowed under "fair use", but that's not really what's relevant here. Using "non-free content" and "fair use content" interchangeably often leads to problems whenever such files are discussed because many mistakenly assume they're one and the same; so, it's better not to do so on policy/guideline pages whenever possible. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:02, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
