Including season links on templates

We've come to a point where we need to make a decision. With close to half of the individual season article stubs currently created, an easy way to navigate between the articles is needed. I see two options: Option 1 we include a hideable seasons list on the main Template:St. Louis Cardinals navbox (the way it currently appears) or Option 2 we use the separate Template:St. Louis Cardinals seasons navbox and place it underneath the main navbox on the individual season articles only. Vote for your preference below. I favor Option 2. Timpcrk87 21:02, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Maybe do decades?

Would it be possible to put the decades in the box, so you click on the 1990's and you go to a page that has links to the 1990-99 seasons, 1980's has 1980-89, etc? DrewD007 21:58, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure it would be possible, but I don't like the idea at all. That creates a dozen new pages with only ten links each, it would be very unneccesary and redundant with the St. Louis Cardinals seasons article and the Template:St. Louis Cardinals seasons navbox.Timpcrk87 17:32, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Name for 1800s season articles

What should we name the articles for the seasons before 1900 when the team was not called the Cardinals yet? Should we still name the article the 1892 St. Louis Cardinals season or should we go with 1892 St. Louis Browns season and then 1899 St. Louis Perfectos season? I'm in favor of doing it the second way with 1892 St. Louis Cardinals rediricting to the real article at 1892 St. Louis Browns and so on. Is there a consensus on this subject? Article to keep an eye on Darryl Kile

An editor on the page wants to keep changing the infobox to colors to "Astro colors" from the Cardinals colors they currently are. Now even though I'm a Cards fan, I don't think infobox colors should changed on whims like this-unless maybe we are dealing with a current player changing teams. With all the different teams and fans, the color changes could be endless.(Think of the edit war you could have over Roger Clemens' colors). I think the simplest solution is to respect the original colors established in the article-similar to how we respect the American or British English used in the original article. If Darryl Kile's infobox was first created in Astro colors I would feel the same way just like I'm ok with Keith Hernandez being in Mets color. He had his best years by far with the Cards but the article was first created with Mets colors, so be it. Agne^Cheese/^Wine 18:36, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

He played six seasons with Houston, including throwing a no-hitter, and only two seasons with the Redbirds. I think it's fine to keep it Houston colors. Update our Project template?

I recently noticed that WikiProject Boston Red Sox has their project template box setup like our parent WikiProject Baseball does, which they can use to keep track of quality & importance ratings related to their team. I think modifying our template to include ratings would be a great way to help us keep track on the status of our own top priority articles. First, welcome to WP:St. Louis Cardinals Phyrkrakr. The easiest way to see a list of our articles that have reached Feature Article status is by clicking the "FA" link of left hand side of our articles ratings table; it's the first thing you'll see under the "Rating Articles" section. The reason you can't find any "A" class articles under our project is because there currently are none, so that category automatically gets left out of the article ratings table (although Ozzie Smith is getting pretty close to "A" status). Shortened history section

I've been working on a shorter history section for the Cardinals article based on other sports team articles that have reached FA status, such as Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. Because it will be a very drastic edit to the article, I want to let everyone know so they can review it first. After looking over your proposed changes to the main article, I have to say I totally agree with them. Based on the Bears' article, there is a clear precedent of placing an in-depth history on the "History of..." page, and a concise summary on the main article. Wikiproject Award Ideas

I've noticed that some of the baseball wikiprojects like WP:NYY & WP:BOSOX have their own wikiproject award, and I thought that something like that would be a cool thing for us to have too. Old seasons

I have no idea if anybody's going back and adding to old season articles. But if anybody feels like doing so as this page suggests, the best thing would be to start with world championship seasons. I wrote the 2006 article and added quite a bit to the 1964 article but there is little on anything of the others. Vidor (talk) 21:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

There are only ten world championship seasons. And 2006 and 1964 have quite a bit of material, so really there are only eight. I'm just saying, if anybody takes it on themselves to expand the old articles, that would be the best place to start. Vidor (talk) 16:42, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

I agree with your comments Vidor; it's one of the reasons I help to implement our Project's article importance rating system that you can read about on the project page. I'm pretty sure the all the world championship season are list as "high-importance" right now, so hopefully other people will catch on and edit those seasons first. Should Ozzie Smith be a featured article candidate?

I was hoping to get a second opinion about whether or not I should nominate Ozzie Smith as a Featured article candidate. The article is about as comprehensive as I can make it; the only thing I'm even remotely concerned about is if anything has been missed in copyediting. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. It seems like you're referring to the Template:Infobox MLB player. This is the standard template from Wikiproject Baseball that most articles about current MLB players use; just click on the link above, and copy & paste the template text into the top of Josh Kinney's article. I would also suggest taking a look at other current MLB players to get a sense of how those article are setup, such as the GA-Class rated Iván Rodríguez article. Bo Hart

Everyone loves Bo Hart. Every Cardinal fan alive. Anyways, his wiki page is really lacking. The first thing it needs is an infobox. The MLB player one obviously doesn't fit, neither does the retired player, because he's still playing. He played 73 games for the Kansas City T-Bones this year (and hit .272). I agree; Bo Hart is awesome. The template you're looking for does happen to be the new Template:Infobox MLB player, which combines both active and retired players. Bo's notability, i.e. the reason he's notable enough to have a Wiki article, is because he did play at the MLB level. So, even though he's currently in the minors, this template is correct one. Project page redesign ideas

I'm currently considering taking a break from improving Stan Musial to re-design our project page. While we are clearly ahead of other baseball team projects in terms of quantity of Featured content, the current project page just doesn't do the Cardinals, or our project, justice anymore. I'd like some input from project members concerning re-design ideas and implementation, and maybe even ideas on how to make our project stand out from the other team projects. The main Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball page seems like a great place to start, and the BoSox team project page is really well done too. As I've said, any thoughts or comments are welcome. "Death of the Curse of the Bambino"

Hi all, it seems that User:SNIyer12 is hot to add all sorts of importance about this topic to Cards-related pages, and in particular, on the fact that Busch Memorial Stadium was the location for the "death" (including it in the Sox-Yanks rivalry navbox - see my discussion here, trying to add Sox and the Sox-Yanks rivalry navboxes to the Old Busch article, etc.) I'm asking for extra opinions, eyes (and possibly help), because SNIyer12 seems to be on a slow push for this. S/he's reverted, waits a bit, and then re-does the edits, despite being asked not to. So, I ask - is it just me, or is this "death" just not that big in Cards lore, and does anybody think that Old Busch (itself) is that big in the Sox lore? umrguy42 22:43, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

While there aren't too many pleasant memories to recall from the 2004 World Series for Cards fans like myself, I'd have to say there is virtually no importance from a Cardinals perspective about the BoSox's supposed curse; that's something that WP:BoSox should be dealing with almost exclusively. I mean, yeah, it's worth a brief one sentence mention on the Busch Memorial Stadium article as far as it being the place the supposed curse ended, but that's about it. Sports Notability

There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Stand for Stan - Help make his article a Featured Article

Folding@home team and potential outreach steps

With Stan's article close to reaching Featured Article status, it got me thinking about the future of our WikiProject. Ideally, I'd like the project to have sustained activity for the foreseeable future, and to find ways to draw the interest of people who would enjoy researching and writing about Cardinals-related people and topics. I decided to take a very small first step in the outreach of our WikiProject by establishing a WikiProject St. Louis Cardinals team for Folding@home[1]. As their website describes, Folding@home is a volunteer-based distributed computing project that seeks "to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases" like Alzheimer's and various cancers. Check out the Folding@home website for more info on how to participate, and be sure to use our team number:192057

Dreaming big, if we could establish a fairly active member base, this could lead to things like having WP:CARDS members organize to participate in events like the Susan G. Coleman Race for the Cure in St. Louis, members making presentations about Stan, Ozzie, or other HOF people to schoolkids, or even to one day have some kind of formal or informal presence at the Cardinals annual winter warm-up (now that would be totally cool!). Feel free to post any ideas or comments related to outreach of our project below.

I'd also like to go on record and give props to Tony LaRussa for how he and entire team handled some recent controversy thrown at them, described in this article[2]. Notice how Tony specifically mentioned the Cardinal Way in the article I just linked to, because of course the Cardinals Way is what our WikiProject is all about. I was hoping to get more information on the Cardinals-Reds rivalry since that has now been renewed. I would also like info on the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry to be added to. The off-hand info I can offer about this rivalries is unfortunately not very fact-based...In regards to the Cards-Reds rivalry, I would've been hard pressed to say there was even any kind of rivalry until one of the Reds' players made some derogatory comments during the '10 season. Since the Cards and Reds have been in the N.L. so long, you'd think there me more of a rivalry there, but that would really have to be proven by further research. In regards to the Cards-Cubs rivalry, I regard it as an intense yet mostly friendly rivalry. Certainly Cards-Cubs games don't routinely devolve into fights or derogatory taunting and obscene language use between fans and/or players like you would find with the NYY-BOS series, or Cubs-White Sox, etc. There have been multiple books written about the Cards-Cubs rivalry, and off the top of my head I can think of one called something like "The I-55 Series." I'm not aware of any project members currently planning on improving the Cards-Cubs article, but hopefully some of the books out there can get you the info you need. Post-season regional series

I thought I'd bring to your attention of a little nugget I found on Retrosheet. They have a list of post-season regional series' played in the early 20th century. One recently added involves the Cardinals vs the Brown in 1917. Thanks for the post; I had never even heard of the 1917 matchup, and it's very cool, especially the Browns pitcher who threw 18 scoreless innnings in the same day! As far as creating an article, this is something I'm not interested in pursuing right now, but I welcome any editor who would like to start up an article and maybe see if any more info can be uncovered as well. State of the Project 2011

For posterity's sake, I'd thought I'd throw together a brief overview of where the Project is at right now, and sort of "think out loud" about the project's future. In short, 2010 was a solid year for WikiProject St. Louis Cardinals, as Stan Musial's article was promoted to Featured Article status, and Ozzie Smith's article made the English Wikipedia main page on Nov. 17th. In fact, I would be bold enough to say Stan's wiki article played a small part in helping the campaign to get him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In terms of participation, what the project lacks in numbers of participants we make up for with quality work. As seen with other articles like 1926 World Series & Rogers Hornsby, the Cardinals are such a large part of baseball history we enjoy a large crossover with other teams and work by other editors, helping to increase the project's article quality. In comparison to the other MLB team-specific wikiprojects, ours is essentially the most active right now, and our Project's page design continues to rank in the top two of all MLB team projects. In terms of outreach, my first step towards outreach using the Folding@Home team haven't yielded anything, but admittedly I haven't really ever tried to recruit anyone to the project, either online or in person. As evidenced by the 01-15-2011 St. Louis editors meetup mentioned above, there is opportunity to continue growing collaboration. Looking towards the future, something like our Project's presence as the annual St. Louis Cardinals winter warm-up remains a pipe-dream, as is our Project being represented at the annual Wikimania conference. As long as we can keep a modest level of activity, I still feel confident we can one day reach the project's goal of having all top importance articles at Featured Article status. Discussion on Albert Pujols

With the news that Albert has left St. Louis & signed with Anaheim, I thought it was appropriate for a discussion post. First, and needless to say, I've removed his picture from our Project's front page, and replaced it with one of Yadi, who I would now consider to be the face of our franchise. What are your thoughts; is Carp or Waino a better choice? Should we go with a picture of a retired player? Please also link to the free-use picture (from wikimedia commons) you'd like to use if you'd prefer a different pic than the current one of Yadi.

I'd also encourage project members to remain positive, and if anyone was contributing to or monitoring his article, let's find an important Cardinals figure, like Red or Whitey, to shift our energy too. Also, what are your thoughts on how we should rate Albert's article importance for our Project; top importance? high importance? Well, Muboshgu won. I suggest that his action of November 2011 in which he deleted material recounting this game in the 2011 World Series page is proof of bad faith. I suggest all interested parties watch the page and see whether, after claiming on the AfD page that the solution was to expand the Game 6 subsection of that page, he actually deletes material on that page as he did in November of last year. I was at the List of MLB Perfect Games article not long ago, and I noticed that all the games in the modern era had their own articles. I thought about how that douchebag Muboshgu was responsible for my article getting deleted, and I got angry. I feel like creating an article again. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Looking for someone to take a look at Al Olmsted and/or Kim Seaman

I'm working on game logs for the Phillies (my eventual goal is to work back to 1883, their inaugural year). I was working on September 1980 the last couple of days and came across Al Olmsted's page which consisted of 2 lines and an infobox. Since I'm not a deer-hunter, I spent this first day of buck season here in Pennsylvania updating his article and trying to find multiple varied sources to cite the information. All right, so for both players, it is always ideal if we can incorporate newspaper or magazine feature stories to substantiate biographical information, or at the very least, newspaper game summaries which often have tidbits such that readers have the option to follow our article to one of our sources for more information. If possible, it would be good to add some additional secondary sources, but other than that, what you did is well within policy, and augmented the information already in the articles. Great job. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
