Can someone explain to me what the purpose of this special page category is. One would think that it is a listing of pages that don't link to anything, but that is not true of the majority of the pages on this listing. What is this?? clarkefreak
- It is supposed to be a list of pages that don't link to anything. But it is not dynamic, in other words it needs to be refreshed from time to time otherwise it gets out of date and includes pages which have had links added since the last refresh. --Etimbo | Talk 16:49, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Ok, Thanks for the explanation. clarkefreak 20:00, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
categories
editHi Clarkefreak! I saw your note on the Village Pump about categorizing things, and I'm interested in helping out. Unfortunately, I don't read German, so I don't know what page you were looking at that displays their categorization method. I took a look at the English Browse Categories page, and it looked pretty good to me, but if the german way is better, I'd be willing to help out. Let me know! Thanks. Spangineer ∞ 15:55, May 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I'm working 40 hrs. a week and taking a college course online this summer, so my availability might be limited too, but here's what I've done so far. I looked over the german main page and figured out what you were looking at. They link to their portals, and we have portals too – take a look at Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Mathematics, for example. I suggested that the browse categories page link to the portals first (not the categories). But only some of the links on that page have their own portals. I also suggested on the main page talk that the 8 links at the top of the main page be changed to links to their respective portals. Again, the problem is that only 4 of those links have their own portals (Life, Science, Math, and History). So if we want this to go through, we have to make the portals for all those sections, most likely. We'll see what everyone thinks. That will at least get us closer to what the German wikipedia looks like, but still not as in depth. We could work to reformat the portals to include more stuff, but I think at the present the best course of action is to get the portals used instead of the categories. That will make the information much more accessible and useful. Let me know what you think! --Spangineer ∞ 23:33, May 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Take a look at Wikipedia:Wikiportal for how to create the portals themselves... --Spangineer ∞ 23:39, May 24, 2005 (UTC)
- I know the librarians are interested in helping out with organizational stuff; perhaps we could get their help. Once the portals are up I don't think they will be that difficult to maintain, especially if they are linked off the main page, because then they'll get more visibility. And I don't think setting up the portals themselves will be too terribly difficult... maybe somewhat time consuming searching for content to put up, but not too bad. And no, unfortunately I'm not an admin; I'm still not sure I have enough experience. Someday though, hopefully :). Spangineer ∞ 16:43, May 25, 2005 (UTC)
Go to preferences and under User data there's a field for your signature. If you check the box for a "Raw signature," you can type in whatever you want into that box and that's what will pop up every time you sign with the 4 tildes. My signature field consists of [[User:Spangineer|Spangineer]] [[User talk:Spangineer|∞]], where "& # 8 7 3 4 ;" without any spaces and without the quotes is the infinity sign. You can play around with that and add all sorts of characters or whatever – some wikipedians get really creative with their signatures. Hope that helps. --Spangineer ∞ 22:53, May 27, 2005 (UTC)

Hello. Round four of Wikipedia Mind Benders will open on Thursday, December 1. This round will be drastically different from round three; part one will consist of a creative project, and part two will be developed from there. The full details will be released when the round opens. Time and speed should not be major factors in this round; thus, there is no exact opening time for the round as speed will not factor into the scoring. Thanks! Yea...I'm working on Wikipedia:WikiProject New York Theatre and have tried to find support through the Village Pump, but haven't been successful there. (We got into a discussion of theater vs. theatre, instead of gaining interest.) Is there any good way to get people working on the project and increase interest? Clarkefreak ∞ 21:22, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- The only thing I can think of is finding related WikiProjects (eg Wikipedia:WikiProject Theatre) and putting a message on the talk page. Other WikiProjects put a boiler plate on the talk page of the articles they manage - this can also gather interest (eg Talk:Theatre has the yellow boxes at the top).--Commander Keane 21:31, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I created the article InkBall earlier today, and couldn't get the image to do what I wanted it to. I would like it to be smaller than it is, but the way I'm trying to do that isn't achieving my goal. - I replaced it with

editHi, do you rememeber the deletion of the userboxes redirect? Well, a administrator restored it. Now another user is trying to delete it yet again. He, to be fair, is following the proper channels and placed it in Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion. You seemed to be interrested in the redirect (you appear in the talkpage), therefore I contacted you (in a crude way). Read his arguments, read the arguments of the opposition, and if you care about the redirect, vote according to your personal opinion. Thanks Flamarande 16:07, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Whosafraidofvirginiawoolf.jpg
editThis media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Whosafraidofvirginiawoolf.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 82.83.109.179 17:26, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

School IP blocking
editHi Clarkfreak, thanks for messaging. I don't think it'd be a good idea to block 216.114.70.163. I'm not exactly sure if it works this way, but I believe that even if you have your own account, you would not be able to edit if your computer was using that IP address. Also, we generally don't block school IPs indefinitely. Even if there are a few persistent vandals, those vandals inevitably leave the school eventually... hopefully to be replaced by constructive editors. We don't want to eliminate the possibility of good edits coming from this IP. Let me know if I can help you with anything. --Fang Aili 說嗎? 14:15, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
WikiProject Musicals
editHi! I'm leaving you this message because your name is listed as a participant in WikiProject Musicals (previously WikiProject Broadway) or I feel you may be interested in the project. It seems that the project has laid dormant for quite awhile, but I would like to work toward getting it up and operative. I have a few ideas that I've outlined on the talk page, and would love your input. Working together, I think we can signifigantly improve the quality of the articles relating to musicals on Wikipedia. — MusicMaker 06:12, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- We may have a problem, here. WikiProject New York Theatre, WikiProject Broadway, and WikiProject Off-Broadway were all started at the same time and all used {{Broadway-project}}, {{Broadway-todo}}, etc. Over the past week or so, thinking we were the only ones using the template, we moved {{Broadway-project}} to {{Musicals-project}} (as we changed from Wikipedia:WikiProject Broadway to Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicals). We left a re-direct to {{Musicals-project}}. I went through and changed all of the appropriate {{Broadway-project}} to {{Musicals-project}} (as they were redirecting there, anyway). At that point, I looked into Wikipedia:WikiProject New York Theatre, found some activity there, and realized, too late, that I was screwing things up for you guys.
- Long story short (too late), I set up a new {{Broadway-project}} directing people to WikiProject New York Theatre. Wikipedia:WikiProject Broadway currently redirects there, as well. The template's not on as many articles as it was -- {{Musicals-project}} is on about 600-700 pages right now.
- At WikiProject Musical Theatre (as we're now called), we've decided to take a more global view. For instance, instead of an infobox that focuses on a specific production (Broadway, as it typically is...), we're trying to make things more generalized so as not to, well, offend the Brits, really.... We're trying to form a consensus on article structure, as well as create the new infobox (which, I think, is done).
- I definitely don't want to step on any toes and, in hindsight, it looks like I might have. For that, my apologies.

Fair use rationale for Image:Glengarry.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Glengarry.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 12:24, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

editI have tagged Image:Whosafraidofvirginiawoolf.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. Rettetast 18:30, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Lion king large.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Lion king large.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:23, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- The easiest way to make this go away is to use {{Non-free use rationale}}. You need to fill one out for theatre and show. I think those would be OK, the other less so. Kbthompson (talk) 00:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Glengarry.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Glengarry.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. 2019 US Banknote Contest
editUS Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

Disambiguation link notification for August 27
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of U.S. baseball stadiums by capacity, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pioneer League. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:10, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
