Wikipedia talk:Map data/Northern North Island Volcanics
Potential improvements
editMuch of the approximations relate to lack of data or tracks having a limit of 500 points long or other attempts to limit data size of the overlay to about 1 Mbyte. It must be emphasised that some of the detail relating to individual volcanoes is believed to be more accurate than other general sources so an inconsistency should be double checked against fieldwork where this is in the academic literature, noting that not all sources used are in the public domain. Much volcano hill location data available to me such as those in Northland and Coromandel were not added to the database when it became apparent it would add little to the geological map and frankly I have tended personally to only know much of Coromandel and Northland superficially from roads rather than on foot. I decided to do this however for Auckland readers who might want to orientate to their nearest named volcano which tend to be more accessible on foot. After all an interest in geology was stimulated in me when I realised several of the dwellings with a view I lived in very young childhood times on steep slopes were such as they were on volcano rims or directly over a fault. Personal knowledge was used when sources inconsistent or to save initial time. This could result in names inconsistent with academic sources or spelling mistakes, not that academic papers do not have these (and not that different Maori iwi or for that matter Europeans have the same historic names or spellings !). Hopefully most are correct or consistent with the NZ gazetteer. The master data is in a kml file I created but this is incomplete and has to have manual editing in the Json conversion process. Unhappily I do not have the time to correct some tracks at this time that I know are not perfect or split them up. Some data also was made approximate as tracing every valley is a thankless task and some corrections made may have been lost with inevitable crashes that even the best hardware and software can have, despite a frequent backup policy. Corrections are not always easy but may be appropriate. To create kml tracks and point data consider using gps visualiser software. I always sandbox edits before adding to a master file such as this. Debugging such a massive json file is not trivial if you make large additions at a time. ChaseKiwi (talk) 17:10, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Tasks outstanding
editMake Coromandel rhyolites slightly transparent if more than 2 Ma years old and review ages Coromandel volcanics given additional sources now identifiedChaseKiwi (talk) 14:30, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
