Proposal - Canberra's first meet-up of local Wikipedians

When - sometime in the last three months of 2007 (any suggestions)
Why - after making the seventeenth edit to Kippax one gets a hard-earned thirst that needs to be quenched. Why not a meet up in our nations capital?
Who - politicians, public servants, porn stars... any Wikipedian in the ACT, or any outsider detouring on the four hour rush to the snow.
Where - (any suggestions? National Library cafe? Woden KFC? Malcolm Turnbull's flat when he is not in?)
over to y'all...

Lol ... I suggested such a meeting a few months ago...and guess where we met (well, the two of us who did)? At the National Library Cafe? Anyhow, I'd be interested if the time suited. Sterry2607 11:16, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd be up for it, as long as it's either at night or on a weekend. Rebecca 23:40, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was going to suggest the national library on a weekday lunchtime, but that does not suite Rebecca. Weekend lunch time may be OK with me. Sterry2607: how did the meeting go? Graeme Bartlett 01:24, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sterry and I met up and have continued to meet regularly. It is fun talking to someone with the same interests. For me, evenings or weekends (afternoons) would suit. The Library coffee shop gets quite busy and closes quite early. There are lots of places for coffee, even Questacon where you can sit in the sun? Stellar 03:17, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm pretty easy with any time - except when I have other commitments! Can we make it in November though? Saturdays (lunch or afternoon) are usually good for me...but can do Sunday if that's preferred. Unfortunately I won't be free until November 10th ... would hate to miss it. So, being pushy, how does Saturday November 10th - lunch or afternoon tea - suit people? I guess somewhere near the centre is best - but Stellar is right about NLA. We only went there the first time - early closing is an issue. There's also Regatta Point (post Floriade!!)...can be inside or outside depending on the weather, lunch or coffee. I can't see any reason why I wouldn't be able to make it on November 10th. Rebecca 05:08, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I would be free most times, including 10 November.--Grahamec 04:18, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am unfamiliar with Wikipedia meets, but I would think that if we planned for something worthwhile it would probably be for a few lazy hours, and therefore having it during a weekday lunchtime might not be the best idea. Happy to suggest a date in late October or November if it will attract greater participation. Kransky 06:02, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
November 10th is fine for me also. It seems the location is more in doubt. The Old Parliament House cafe with the courtyard is nice. Stellar 08:13, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Old Parliament House Cafe in the House is an excellent idea. The gazebo outside, as you say, is great on a nice day. Shall we say there on November 10? Lunch or afternoon tea/coffee? Sterry2607 09:12, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sounds great. Either is fine by me. Afternoon tea maybe? Rebecca 00:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
How about afternoon tea at 3pm? Graeme Bartlett 00:47, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Works for me. Rebecca 05:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think afternoon tea is a good start too ... I'm happy with 3pm, or we could make it 2.30pm? Sterry2607 06:37, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Either time is fine with me.--Grahamec 11:18, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
We have a time and date - 2:30pm November 10 at the Old Parliament House Cafe . See y'all Kransky 13:08, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Do you want to spam the talk pages of all those we know are in Canberra, to advertise the meeting? Graeme Bartlett 23:06, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Do you know anybody else in Canberra? (I know zip) Kransky 12:31, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Look at Category:Wikipedians in the Australian Capital Territory and you will see some. Graeme Bartlett 13:00, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can someone go through and let those folks know about it? Also, she's not on that list, but unless she's moved I'm pretty sure Petaholmes is in the ACT too. Rebecca 23:34, 14 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have made an invitation that is up for suggestion, improvements or advertising. Graeme Bartlett 00:25, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Works for me, as long as you fix the typo! Rebecca 02:34, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Graeme for the invite! I think myself and Dfrg would be very happy to attend! I guess it would depend what time I have indoor soccer. We will get back to you though. One more thing though, if we are coming do we add ourselves to that list? Drizzt Jamo 02:46, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yep. Nice to have some RSVPs so we know who to expect... Rebecca 03:50, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Rebecca is good at spotting typos. At least I did not subst it on to all the user pages! One spelling mistake is now fixed in the invite. Graeme Bartlett 05:16, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've added myself in, thanks for the invite. Won't be able to stay too long - Saturday's a big night for me. Any chance of media coverage? PDH got a lovely writeup a few months back. --Pete 04:25, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, let's get some media! I'll have to see what's happening, but I'd love to come. Cheers, Dfrg.msc 05:26, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think trying to get media coverage is a bit much. It's just a good opportunity for a few of us who live in Canberra to get together and meet each other. If we're going to turn it into some sort of promotional event, I'd be less keen on going. Rebecca 06:13, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I reckon the only media we want is wikimedia. If we manage to get a thousand people along to meeting, then some journalists will probably have been acciedently included! But journalists are probably too busy being paid to write, and don't donate their time on wikipedia articles! Graeme Bartlett 06:18, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
please - NO MEDIA! Kransky 11:17, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Agreed - we averted a near-disaster at our Perth meetup 6 months ago. As it is, the media is not going to be that interested in a bunch of Wikipedia editors meeting for coffee anyway, you'd have to dress as Osama bin Laden and drive through the gates of The Lodge to even rate these days. :P On a more serious note while I can't make it, I'll be in Canberra two weekends later and would be happy to meet up with other Wikipedians (although not on the 24th itself - election will keep many of us busy no doubt!) Orderinchaos 13:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Any reason this isn't mentioned on the Australian Wikipedians' Noticeboard? Confusing Manifestation 12:28, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah ill come. Culverin? 10:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
