Sunday March 20 meetup?
editWhat do folks think about Sunday March 20 for the next meetup?--Pharos (talk) 20:47, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- Okay for me as of now. Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:48, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- March 20 it is then, as it's been a few days and we've meanwhile gotten a really positive reply from the venue.--Pharos (talk) 20:10, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- I have plans that night. Would this be a day event or a night thing? — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 20:12, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- The main meeting is during the afternoon, with dinner afterward.--Pharos (talk) 21:05, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'm too broke to go to a restaurant. I'm going to a concert with free food and free open mic tomorrow.--Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 14:26, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Wifi?
editIs there any reason to bring along my laptop tomorrow? Do they have Wifi there? — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 14:43, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- Gah, I hadn't even thought of that. Please say there's wifi! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk)
Neighborhood wiki
editI recall someone organizing a day in May to photograph your neighborhood boundaries but my poor Googling skills fail to find a page about it. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:45, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- Here is Tom's page on Mapping the Hood; I'm not sure if the date is finalized yet.--Pharos (talk) 11:56, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
April meetup
editI know it's a bit early, but I want to try to nail down a date for an April meetup. I'm going to be bringing a guest who really wants to see one of our meetups, so my dates are a little restrictive. It would have to be either Saturday, April 23rd, or either day of the following weekend, April 30th or May 1st. Do any of these dates work for people?
We just had a business meetup, so I guess April can be socialization only. I'm open to ideas for where and what! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:13, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
- I think we should do it May 1. Peter.C • talk • contribs 01:21, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
- Do April 23 and 30 not work for you, peter, or do you just prefer May 1? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 14:47, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
Transportation would be the only issue for me. LiteralKa (talk) 01:39, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
- April 23 & May 1 works for me, but April 30 does not. — Becksguy (talk) 02:17, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
- April 23 sounds good. May 1 is dopey, why have the April meet in May? :P Mitch32(20 Years of Life: Wikipedia 5:33) 14:38, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
April 23 seems to work for everyone, so let's set that at the date. Anyone got ideas for where to meet? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 20:16, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Food and/or amusements
editIdeas that have been floated for meetup venues for april:
- Dave & Buster's in Times Square (food, drink, and an arcade built in)
- Ollie's Noodle Bar, yet again
- a tour of the NYPL
I am crap at venue-picking, people. Help! More ideas? Preferences? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 19:45, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Downvote for Dave & Buster's. I don't feel like getting super ripped off. Whatever we do can't be 18/21+, right? Hmm. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 01:06, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose Dave & Busters per HelloAnnyong. Peter.C • talk • contribs 01:08, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, wherever we go has to be ok with under-18s and under-21s. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 01:26, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, so is that a no on Hustler Club? Boo. Let me think about this for awhile. How many people should we anticipate? — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 01:32, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Another possibility is The Piper's Kilt, a bar/restaurant in Inwood that Pharos, Mitchazenia, and I ate at during Watson week. They let in underagers, have good burgers, and are fairly cheap. It might depend on our headcount, as it's not a HUGE place. Is Inwood too much of a hardship for people to get to/from? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 01:49, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Also, I should add the restaurant is all of 20 feet from The 207th Street station, the terminal for the A. Also, the place does have good wifi. :) Mitch32(20 Years of Life: Wikipedia 5:33) 01:51, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Is this a social gathering or an actual meeting with stuff to do? If it's just social then the Wifi is less important, I should think. And I would respectfully request something further down in the city, as it'd just be easier to get to. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 02:12, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- It's social, and Piper's Kilt actually does have (somewhat weak) wifi. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 02:32, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

What about this place? American-style Thai food, probably has room for a group, a couple locations to choose from. We could look into maybe the Astor Place or Union Square locations? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 12:50, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Honestly, my preference is to have any meet north of 59th Street or south of 14th Street, since its at least different options than expensive district from 14th - 59th. That and because we've had most of our meets in those ranges. Also, the fact that that people complain that a restaurant on 207th Street is too far. It's still Manhattan, it's still publically accessible, so what if its a it's a bit further north? Mitch32(20 Years of Life: Wikipedia 5:33) 13:52, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- I think most people are going to be more comfortable with aiming for midtown or downtown rather than way uptown, Mitch. There are more transport hubs there and it's just a bit easier to get to. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 13:59, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- That, and there are plenty of equally expensive places under 14th. But if we're having this discussion, downtown works. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 22:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Yet another possibility: Congee Village and/or Congee Bowery. Chinese, said to be spacious, I'm told it has a private room and takes reservations. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 13:59, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
I oppose the NYPL tour for April, since I can't be there :( but instead perhaps let's do that in May, same time as GLAM Camp? Also, see http://game.nypl.org which would be super awesome for Wikimedians to participate in, if there is interest. --Aude (talk) 17:22, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- That's not a food/amusement! LiteralKa (talk) 02:36, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Hmm. Or...we could attempt a picnic? Maybe in central park? Pharos says this has worked in the past... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fluffernutter (talk • contribs) 18:41, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- We could do a picnic, as long as it's not too cold out. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 22:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- April is prolly too cold for a picnic. May would be better. June betterer. — Becksguy (talk) 22:38, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Since I live in Manhattan, all the places mentioned (including the The Piper's Kilt, Mitch's suggestion in Inwood) are relatively easy for me to get to. So I'm happy with any of them, as long as the food is good and the younger members can get in. However, since we just had a business meeting & dinner in March, we don't have to have a meeting in April. Lets seriously look at a picnic in May, maybe in one of the two places done so far, Central Park or Prospect Park. Or we could do one of the restaurants mentioned so far, and then do a picnic in June, which would prolly be more comfortable temperature wise, as long as it's done before the dog days of August. Just tossing peanut butter at the wall and seeing what sticks. — Becksguy (talk) 05:57, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Van Cortlandt Park? Before I get crucified, its at least a large park accessible by subway.Mitch32(20 Years of Life: Wikipedia 5:33) 10:35, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Don't be defensive, Mitch ☺ I think VCP is a good idea. I did my HS senor field day there, oh so many decades ago (Hint: This song was #1 on Billboard back then.) — Becksguy (talk) 14:03, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
VCP will work for me, at least. [1] Our old folks biker gang are deciding whether tomorrow's lunch in Inwood will be a picnic in the park or a table in a restaurant. Easier process when it's only two lady bosses deciding for everyone and the rest of us like it or lump it, but even if they decide in favor of the wimps I'll go along. Jim.henderson (talk) 11:09, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
A picnic in May would be fine with me, but I'm determined to *also* have an april meetup, since I'll have a visitor that week who really wants to meet WMNYC. I'll try to call around to restaurants in the next few days and see about space. Can i get a headcount? Who's up for a 4/23 meetup? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 12:32, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- In for 4/23 foodie meetup — Becksguy (talk) 13:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- 4/23 is fine. Really need to get to Melrose - Williams Bridge beforehand though.Mitch32(20 Years of Life: Wikipedia 5:33) 04:11, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Picked the place
editIf anyone strenuously objects to eating here, speak now or forever hold your peace, because it looks perfect to me and unless someone can't stand it, I am hereby declaring that that's where we'll meet on the 23rd. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 16:03, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- OK even without Wifi. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:23, 7 April 2011 (UTC) My thoughts for the Concrete Plant that day were not yet set.
