Livestream?
editThe perennial question. Wwwhatsup (talk) 00:35, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, the rooms are pre-equipped for it, and we'll set up two Zoom links in advance. Pharos (talk) 20:20, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Are zoom links available yet? I have a number of people that want to zoom in. Nowa (talk) 18:38, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- The livestream links have been added: Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia_Day_2024#Livestreaming Wil540 art (talk) 00:46, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- Very good. I will look to simulcast via https://isoc.live Wwwhatsup (talk) 06:04, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Simulcast is at https://isoc.live/17212. Disappointed to not see slides on Zoom. If the camera could be adjusted up a bit at least we could see the screen. Viewers are asking where the etherpad link is. Wwwhatsup (talk) 16:03, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Speaker change on 12:15 panel. Program is not updated. Name? Wwwhatsup (talk) 17:30, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Got it. Jordan McRae, Wikimedia Foundation. I updated the program. Wwwhatsup (talk) 17:39, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, and James Forrester, Wikimedia Foundation. Wwwhatsup (talk) 17:44, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Zoom lost video at the start of James Forrester's talk. Wwwhatsup (talk) 20:07, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- I sync'd his slides for the video. So, all good. Wwwhatsup (talk) 10:35, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Videos
editare now posted. The captions are straight out of otter.ai, totally uncorrected. Feel free to go in and remediate. Wikimedia Commons Category: Wikipedia 23 NYC videos. Many hands make light work. Wwwhatsup (talk) 10:39, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Remembering
editIt's possible that the last time I was on-campus at Columbia (Barnard, more specifically) was for another Wiki event. It was a long time ago, I don't remember the exact year, but I do remember that it was the first time I met David Goodman. While I'm looking forward to seeing all my wiki-friends again (and meeting new ones), it will be with a certain amount of sadness knowing that David won't be there. RoySmith (talk) 03:06, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- It is indeed bittersweet to observe our first Wikipedia Day without David, but he will be remembered and I think his legacy very much continues on in our local community. Pharos (talk) 20:44, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Sold out?
editAccording to the eventbrite link, the event has “sold out” of tickets. Thriley (talk) 09:13, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- I just noticed the same thing today. I had clicked the "sign up" button back in December and when I came back today to put in a Lighting Talk, I noticed that Eventbrite tickets were "required". When I clicked on the Eventbrite link, I also got waitlisted. Hopefully the organizers can sort this out (get a larger room?), otherwise a fair number of people who thought they signed up may not be able to get in. Nowa (talk) 13:29, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Thriley @Nowa - If you are a dedicated Wikimedian, do not be deterred. Please sign up for the waitlist and we will move you to the attendee list. Although we are at capacity, we have some wiggle room with cancelations. Email/ping @Pharos to get moved from the waitlist. - Wil540 art (talk) 19:39, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Many thanks! Nowa (talk) 14:21, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

- @Wil540 art, @Pharos: is the situation any better (more relaxed?) for visitors with Columbia University alumni ID? Abe149 (talk) 07:57, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- FYI: as of 3:43pm on Jan 10, 2024: I can click "Get Tickets" but the next screen says: "Sold Out" and there is NO OPTION for wait list. --CmdrDan (talk) 20:43, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Any WMNYC member or Wikipedia editor who is having issues getting on the waitlist, email me at wil@wikimedianyc.org (one L) and we will figure it out. Wil540 art (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- I had the same experience as @CmdrDan. No tickets and no option to waitlist. Chiffon Lions (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Waitlist is currently functioning. But...
- What exactly is this venue? I mean: What is the capacity of this venue? I can't remember a time when we had an event that was "Sold Out."
- What was the threshold that triggered the Sold Out notice?
- I say: the more attendees the better the event.
- Remember, so as not to forget: Be Bold.
- If this is a test to limit attendance while that sorta sounds interesting, that is not a good idea. Not in keeping with our mission of being more inclusive, welcoming new members, increasing attendance and participation.
- The more I think about this event being "Sold Out" the less happy I get.
- "Sold Out" keeps people away. "Sold Out" is a waste of energy.
- ARGH!
- --CmdrDan (talk) 22:02, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Waitlist? We don't want a waitlist. We want Attendees.
editThe fact that someone might attempt to sign up to attend our free event on Eventbrite and not receive a confirmed ticket makes me ill.
The fact that someone might express an interest in attending our event and be told. "Sorry we're full, but maybe you'll get lucky and a seat will open" strikes me as antithetical to everything I know about wikipedia and free knowledge.
Below is the first paragraph of our Code of Conduct. Getting waitlisted is certainly not hassle-free. I sure hope no one finds getting waitlisted a form of harassment, but I can see how some might.
Wikimedia NYC is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, ability, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), preferred intellectual property license, and technical ability or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of participants or volunteers in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any event unless it relates to the focus of the event (i.e. history of gender in images, HIV awareness). This includes talks, workshops, parties, Wikipedia talk pages, social networks and other online media. Additionally, any disparaging or harassing remarks made about other attendees while at the same event may result in expulsion from the event. Anyone violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the event at the discretion of the organizers. If you have questions about the code of conduct or behavior, please ask a volunteer.

Oops. Dang. I forgot to sign my comments, above.
My apologies. Thanks to @Rhododendrites for fixing my omission. --CmdrDan (talk) 02:58, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed it's a bad thing when more people can't sign up due to lack of capacity. When planning started, it seemed optimistic to think the same number would come as did in the years shortly before the plague. So, the venue is suitable to a hundred easily or two without much difficulty. This was expected to be more than adequate. But then, more than four hundred hit Eventbrite. There is some reason to expect that over half of those won't show up, which would allow those who are waitlisted to come in, but there's no way of really knowing until day of. Other Eventbites have come out the same way. There was a limit of, say thirty, so I signed for the waitlist. When I arrived, five were on site already, and at start time only twenty more had arrived including a few more of the waitlisted and one how hadn't signed at all. So no problem. That's the difficulty with free events; not having paid, people sign up for too many of them and only later decide which one to attend or even whether. And no, sometimes I didn't get in, and no, either way, I didn't complain that someone was harassing me. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Cool - have fun!
editNot sure I'll make it, but very glad to see this is ongoing and local! Test35965 (talk) 02:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

The date is wrong
editSunday is Jan 14th. Did you mean Sunday or Monday? 108.41.204.159 (talk) 04:23, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- good catch. The error has been fixed. The event is on Sunday. Wil540 art (talk) 04:30, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Will there still be something on copyright?
editThere was something on the original draft, but it seems to be gone now... Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 17:52, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Mary Mark Ockerbloom: We weren't able to organize a copyright-specific session in the end. There will still be some lightning talks and some discussion of copyright in the context of LLM use, however. Complex/Rational 22:15, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you!
editTo @Pharos, @Wil540 art, and all others that organized yesterday's Wikipedia Day...THANK YOU! It was an outstanding and inspiring meeting. Nowa (talk) 12:07, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
