Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (U.S. county roads)

Latest comment: 12 years ago by Fredddie

I'm starting the discussion here, and I included only one state in the table for now. Please discuss additional states that need to be included, what conventions would be appropriate, etc. Imzadi 1979  02:53, 12 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Can someone explain to me what this is about? Tinton5 (talk) 22:46, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
It's an answer to this edit from WT:USRD. It was created because the one-size-fits-all option just doesn't work. –Fredddie 22:57, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

State secondary roads

edit

Are we considering state secondary roads, such as those in Missouri, Montana, and Virginia among other states, to be "county road equivalents"? –Fredddie 22:51, 12 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I didn't exactly have them in mind when I used that phrase. I was intending for that phrase to cover parish roads in Louisiana. If Alaska has borough-maintained roads that fit the mould of county roads in the other states, then I also intended to cover them as well. If others think the state secondaries should be covered here though, I have no objections, but that's something better covered under the scope of WP:USSH because they're explicitly state highways. I would use the criterion of "numbers/designations are reused in different counties," or something analogous and more elegant, as a determining element for whether a secondary state highway system should fall under the county naming convention. This distinction includes New Jersey 600-series routes and Virginia secondary state highways but excludes New Jersey 500-series routes and Michigan CDHs.  V 12:53, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Now, see that's confusing me, and probably making things a bit more complicated that necessary. I think that we should stick to what level of government is in charge of maintenance. That means VA's secondaries are out and should be covered in WP:USSH because they are still state highways. I mean, MoDOT just assigned a second unrelated Route 110 recently, and several states have discontinuous or disconnected highways that repeat numbers in various counties of their states. Otherwise, we have to craft an exception to your rule to get some county-maintained roads back into this guideline. I vote for this guideline to stick to roads maintained by counties or county equivalents. Imzadi 1979  13:16, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Maryland

edit

The text introduction already includes the direction: "In cases where a local road name is the common name instead of an official designation, use that instead." The MD-specific notes could be shortened as a result to "County roads in Maryland are only numbered internally; use the common name instead of any internal designations." The additional guidance on multiple names would be applicable to more than just Maryland and could be incorporated into the instructions above the table. Imzadi 1979  02:30, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you want to implement your suggestion, I have no objection.  V 03:17, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
