Page title

I don't think "Notability (portals)" is a good title for this page, as it doesn't fit the mold of the various subject-specific notability guidelines. Whether or not a portal should be created is based on an internal community decision on how it wishes to organize navigation of English Wikipedia articles, while the subject-specific notability guidelines draw upon real-world citations. No one so far has proposed that type of approach for determining if a portal should exist. isaacl (talk) 04:17, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Criteria

As I've discussed on the portal guidelines discussion page, I don't think there should be specific hard criteria defining when a portal should exist. I believe that just as the editors interested in a given topic area can decide how to best organize the set of associated navigation boxes, they can also decide on the most suitable organization for associated portals. Portals ought not to be created by third parties that aren't interested in remaining engaged with the English Wikipedia sub-community that will assume the burden of maintaining the portal. Those who will be doing the work should have the flexibility to decide how to shape the work to be most effective. isaacl (talk) 04:17, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
