Issue with section edits

edit

I have applied a portal template to my wiki. I am having some issues with the edit function. When I click on a section and attempt to edit the changes I make do not show up in the selected section. Instead, I have to access a template from the main page edit section. Does anyone know how to get the edit section to work? Thanks --Alison.Pattern (talk) 13:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Portal not working

edit

Our company has a private MediaWiki. On it the Portal does not work. Is there a function on the Server that must be enabled to allow it to work? Help? 159.153.138.70 18:58, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I struggled with this too. The answer you seek is here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Spblat#Setting_up_Portals_in_a_Wiki --71.193.232.37 20:03, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I really appreciate the easy tutorial, and am having a slight problem. At the top of the screen i will get this error:

Warning: proc_open(/dev/null) [function.proc-open]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in F:\wamp\www\wiki\includes\Parser.php on line 730

Line 730 from my /includes/parser.php

730 $process = proc_open("$wgTidyBin -config $wgTidyConf $wgTidyOpts$opts", $descriptorspec, $pipes);

However, it doesn't happen at all if i comment out the 3rd item in the descriptorspec array from my /includes/parser.php

I'm by no means a php expert and am not really familiar with the proc_open function, so i'm not sure how that array is used (i.e. what I might screw up by removing that line). Did i miss something involved with configuring tidy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks! Rashad78 21:06, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Importer Bot

edit

Thanks to Misza13, the Wikinews Importer Bot now is available to automatically import certain dynamically-generated Wikinews pages into Wikipedia portals. See the pages that link to User:Wikinews Importer Bot for a growing list of examples. Check it out! RichardF (talk) 18:01, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Portal: namespace

edit

Hi. We'd like to start creating portals on cy, but we're not sure how to go about it. Do we keep the Portal: namespace, or would we use the native Porth: namespace? Thanks. -- Xxglennxx (talkcont.) 14:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

As cy has namespaces called "Categori", "Wicipedia" and "Delwedd" already, I can't think it will matter if you use "Porth". WP:VPT might be a better place to check, though, than here. Pob lwc! BencherliteTalk 14:57, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Diolch/Thankyou, Bencherlite, for your quick reply. I'll be sure to as at the Pump before doing anything :) -- Xxglennxx (talkcont.) 00:08, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Buses

edit

At Portal:Buses which I just created, none of the boxes are acting like boxes; they are going down in a vertical column. RcsprinterGimme a message 08:37, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rcsprinter123, you at least seem to know how portals are made, you see, I'm a new user who wants to make an astrobiology portal, but when I follow this guide, I get lost on step 2. I've tried constructing the portal in my sandbox, so maybe you, or anyone, can look at it and tell me what I did wrong? Thanks.--Jacob.husted (talk) 18:39, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

This information isn't "irrelevant"!!!

edit

On July 27th, 2011, the following information was deleted by Bencherlite:

To create a new portal on the topic "Topic" using the {{tl|box portal skeleton}} template follow these steps:<br>

Note, the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ParserFunctions ParserFunctions extension] will need to
have been installed. Also, a "Portal" namespace will need to have been added
(http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:FAQ#How_do_I_add_extra_namespaces.3F)<br>

Ok, maybe there is a better place for this information, but Bencherlite obviously has no idea how much extra work is involved when THIS INFORMATION IS MISSING! It took me many hours to figure out the missing "Portal" namespace issue (no errors are reported, and everything looks good, but it just doesn't work!) Someone else must have spent time figuring out the ParserFunctions issue, enough to justify his/her time documenting the issue.

In my humble opinion, it is bad form to just delete important information, especially when portals are being promoted by mediawiki now. If information is in the wrong place, PLEASE PUT IT IN THE CORRECT PLACE, don't just delete it.

Thank you for your consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.23.15.117 (talk) 19:01, 31 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

(1) Don't shout, it doesn't help. (2) That information is irrelevant for Wikipedia, because Wikipedia has the Portal namespace correctly installed. (3) You seem to be under the impression that one of Wikipedia's functions is to help people wanting to install MediaWiki software. It isn't. If there's something that you think needs to be added to the information available at MediaWiki's website, do it there, not here. BencherliteTalk 12:47, 1 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ok. If and when I get my portal working properly, I'll add a page for how to make a working portal in MediaWiki's website. Sorry for the "shouting", but it is very frustrating when you go through the trouble to add information that will help people get something to work, and someone else deletes it. The Internet community relies on this sort of colaboration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.57.41.63 (talk) 19:06, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
