Mow?

edit

A friend of mine and I played a card game called Mow. You match each card by suit or number. The rules are unknown at the begining and include no talking and knocking on the playing surface when playing hearts, and the winner adds a new rule at the beginning of each game. You could also be given a card for talking, laughing, or knocking out of turn. Does anyone know about this game? Riceonroute66 01:15, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Television

edit

The correct title of the television program The $64,000 Question cannot be given because Wikipedia converts the $ symbol to "dollar" and sometimes deletes the first digit after the $. Thus, there is a page about the TV show and the heading has this incorrect title: The 64,000 Dollar Question. Also there's a redirect page, The 4,000 Question, because the $6 was deleted. How can a page with the correct title be set up? Pepso 14:39, 27 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Someone added "Rocco's Modern Life" to the list of requested articles. I think it should be removed because there is already an article under the correct name, Rocko's Modern Life. I am going to remove it right now but I wanted to post this here to let whoever added it know. Imerson 04:06, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Suggest in addition to removing the request here, you make a page with the misspelling, "Rocco's Modern Life", and redirect it to the correct page as this seems like it might be a common mistake.--WilliamThweatt 03:28, 8 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Splitting the section

edit

I'd like to propose splitting the Culture and fine arts section into two new sections: Pop Culture and Fine Arts. Pop Culture would be for the categories like Celebrities, Movies, Television, Anime, Comic Books, etc. Fine Arts would be for Literature, Theatre, Dance, Poetry, etc. Is there support for this? MK 18:28, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Why is music not in the index? What category is it under? I can get to it using search....

There is a lot of gaming stuff that would fit in neither Notthe9 03:24, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)
There are many books that are pop-culture and there are many books that could be considered both pop-culture and fine-arts. I say leave the sections as they are so these grey areas don't become headaches. -Xaliqen 10:04, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This is correct. One person's definition of Pop Culture and Fine Arts will be different from another's. To paraphrase Raymond Williams; 'culture is one of the two or three hardest words in the english language to define'. --Graham 12:16, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Mm. Not so sure I agree. Fine Arts, as I understand it, should imply classical origins, at least to some extent. And, even if there is a large grey area, there are certain things that I'm pretty sure everyone agrees goes in one category or the other. ~Kazu 04:36, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Islam Requests

edit

Many of the Islam requests are things like Shams which merely means Sun or relates to Ash-Shams which is a sura from the Qur'an. Da'wah is similar to evangelism or missionary work like an everyday effort to tell people about Islam or to show them through your actions. The point being we could possible to a history of Da'wah throughout time but if there isn't much in an Ibn Hazm article then it is unlikely. Is it a good idea for me to redirect things (like I have with Iftar) to the subject they fit with because iftar is the breaking fast meal which fits with Ramadan or else it is just a definition. Thanks gren

Duplicated content

edit

The last 25% or so of this page was accidentally duplicated in an edit sometime recently. I gave up trying to find the date this happened. I am currently (see timestamp) working to merge the original content added after the duplication back into the main hierarchy. This may take a couple of hours since I might not be able to finish it in one sitting. - dcljr 19:11, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Okay, finished merging. There wasn't a lot, but it's now merged into the main hierarchy. I rearranged a few sections to bring more under the Art section. I think it would benefit from additional reorganizing, though. - dcljr 21:42, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alphabetical by First Name

edit

Would it be the end of the world if I resorted celebrities, writers, and journalists into alphabetical ordering by first name?

I run and maintain the RABot which cleans and sorts pages in WP:RA. However, it only understands how to sort when lists are organized alphabetically from the start of the link (or in the case of people, by their first name). In order to maintain the last name ordering used only on this page and the sports page, I have had to disable all sorting features for these two pages. This just creates more work for people ordering things by hand. I would like to turn the sorting features back on and place everything as alphabetical by first name, but I wanted to ask if that would be okay first. Dragons flight 16:33, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Hearing no objections, I have made the change, which presently affects everything except artists. Dragons flight 02:12, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I just saw Your suggestion. I suppose it's too late to revert, but I find it really unfortunate. Besides, why are artist (i.e., painters) to be treated differently than are writers? It doesn't make sense to me. 211.225.34.168 01:58, 19 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Surely a last name search would perform better than a first name search. 'Brad Pitt' has a common first name, but a not-so-common last, for example. The problem being that many irrelevant links would be produced by the search, right?--Graham 12:26, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Movies?

edit

I propose changing the "Movies" heading to "Cinema and Motion Pictures." The word "movies" is colloquial and not a term used by scholars of film history (who might use this encyclopedia). Don't want to sound like a snob, but I'd prefer the technical term. Anyone object? Bruxism 00:42, 19 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I have no objection.

In the US, normal people 'movies" and NOT 'cinema.' 'Motion pictures' sounds old-fashioned to me. If You really must change the heading, then a re-direct from 'movies' is necessary. Why did You choose this particular title? Is 'cinema' some-thing different from 'motion pictures'? 211.225.34.168 02:15, 19 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I believe Bruxism is wrong in his statement. I am currently studying for a degree in Cultural and Historical Studies in the United Kingdom. I have never felt compelled to use 'Motion Picture', and have not heard any of my lecturers use this term. Indeed, the only time I have come across this term is in essays produced by American scholars before the mid 1980's. I would go so far as to argue that the term 'Motion Picture' is colloquial with respects to the American-English language.--Graham 12:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

"Movies" sounds more like a list of individual productions, but "Cinema" sounds better in reference to the whole field, the art of Cinema, of which movies are the summit. In Britain and Ireland the word "film" is used and "movie" is regarded as an Americanism. The term "Film" can also be used as a category, but again "Cinema" is more general. The term "motion pictures" is perhaps pompous, though it is heard often in referrence to "the motion picture industry". Feargal Mooney 23:01, 24 January 2007 (UTC) 22:56, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is an important concept in Zeph Daniel's story, suggesting that, like in Hegalian politics, there is a kind of "good cop, bad cop" game being played out within the Churches, with legalists acting as bad cop, compelling many to accept the hereticaly liberal "good" cop. He feels both movements ignore important doctrines within Christianity and concentrate on singular issues.

Newt from the Aliens film IS connected to the comics but......

edit

I noticed that the Newt character, featured in the Aliens film, was recently removed from the comic book section of the requested articles page, by Netkinetic. This is apparantly due to the fact that the character is unrelated to the comics. This is only partially true though. The original printings of the first two Dark Horse Comics mini-series did feature the character of Newt, as well as Hicks. It wasn't until the release of the Alien³ film that Dark Horse retconned the series for reprints, changing the character names in order for the comics to still fit in with the movies. Newt became Billie while Hicks was now known as Wilks. So the character IS part of the comic series. However, I don't feel that either the film or comic versions of the character, deserve their own page. I've added the relevant information, concerning the comic book version of the character, to the Aliens (comic) article. The only other thing I can think of would be to have one article about the character that would incorporate both versions including the name change seen in the comics. JohnBWatt

What is the protocol for deleting stuff here?

edit

There are obivous requests here for articles which, even were they to be created, would be candidates for speedy deletion when they were created. Two obvious examples: maskstheatrical comedy and tragedy, which would never be created or kept under that title, and MARY IS GOD CATHOLIC MOVEMENT (all caps), which would be highly unlikely ever to appear under that title, even if that is the purportedly true name of the movement, due to technical limitations (at least). Do we discuss proposed deletions of this sort here, or do we just be bold and take it upon ourselves when such requests are obviously totally wrongheaded? Rlquall 20:46, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

"confronting cultural shift"

edit

I am not aware of any such article. If there is one, then, I do hereby advocate making it easier to locate.

Here are some subject-matter examples:

From Muhammed Ali:

He refused to serve in the American army during the Vietnam War as a conscientious objector, because "War is against the teachings of the Holy Qur'aan. I'm not trying to dodge the draft. We are supposed to take part in no wars unless declared by Allah or The Messenger. We don't take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers."

Is our culture still so pleased w/ Muslim soldiers?

Request article on mat knife

edit

Not sure if this is best category. I don't see a page for the artist's tool called a "mat knife" (also "matte knife"). It doesn't seem to be a sub-entry in another article either.

Apologies if this is not the proper place to request this article.

Bob Spitz

edit

No idea where to put this, but Bob Spitz is an American writer who has written successful biographies of Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

A blurb about him from one of his books: BOB SPITZ has represented the careers of Bruce Springsteen and Elton John. He is the author of The Making of Superstars, Barefoot in Babylon, Dylan, and Shoot Out the Lights. His articles appear regularly in the New York Times Magazine, GQ, Conde Nast Traveler, Men's Journal, In Style, Esquire, Sky, and the Washington Post. What is Magic Card Index?

edit

I'm not sure what the Magic Card Index is meant to be. Do they mean a list of all of the Magic the Gathering Cards? That seems like an impossible project without rampant Copyright Violation. Seems like you'd be better off to just link to http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/ and be done with it.

Need page for "Little Melvin" Williams

edit

Melvin Williams is an actor on HBO's The Wire. He is also a gangster who was "King of West Baltimore" for 30 or so years, according to BET. Many of the stories and characters on the Wire were based on his organization.

Other sources you can use are imdb, and The Urban Twist.

This is mentioned in various places on Wikipedia's Wire pages, like Street level characters of The Wire and also the Wire's main page, but when the name Melvin Williams is attached to a biographical page, like on the page of the episode Moral Midgetry, it links to Vice Admiral Melvin G Williams.

I think it would be worthwhile for Little Melvin to get his own page. Thank you.

Suggestion to trim down this page by moving individuals to Biography, moving Religion to Social Sciences

edit

The page is up to around 221kB at this point. I would suggest two large but easy changes that would make this page more manageable: 1) Move all the requests for articles on individual people to Biography requests, and hang a notice advising folks to put all future bio requests in the bio section 2) Move Religion to Social Sciences, as well as some misc. sections about anthropology/folklore. The net effect would be to narrow the definition of "culture" more so we're not getting "everything involving humans". Both these changes are pretty straightforward, so I'll throw out the idea, see if anyone objects, and plan to make those changes in a week or so if there is no opposition to the idea. Started cleaning

edit

I've cleaned this up a bit, and removed all articles that now have an article from the list. The next step is to weed out the requests that are for articles that will clearly never be on Wikipedia. I'm trying to formulate an easy way to figure out which ones are vanity requests, which ones are spam requests, and which ones are legitimate. Any ideas? S. Dean Jameson 21:34, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

s. dean jameson - you deserve a medal for even attempting to clean up this muddled page.

if you should continue...an i hope you do, "4.11 Print media" as a subtopic of subtopic "4 Broadcasting (television and radio)" is a tad goofy.

also (among many other confusing heirarchy muddles), cinematographors under "4 Broadcasting (television and radio)" without a seemingly corresponding category (i don't think i saw) for film/cinema/movie (whatever the concensus wording for that "the flickers" topic might be!!) cinematographers.

more importantly,

i would expect to see on main "request article" page only 2 entries/links. 1. biography (person -living or dead (or even yet unborn if we get some fetus supreme court type case with unborn baby named) and 2. topic (non human).

then, in those 2, there would be subject classifications/subtopics.

also, it would be helpful to have "requested date" appear next to request (i.e, mary doe (article requested dd/mm/yyyy) instead of (but probably in addition to) looking at yet another page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.173.2.68 (talk) 12:54, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

List of fictional character articles which should not be created

edit

I feel that the below named characters should be removed from this list. I saw a bunch from these, that is why I checked them. I am not sure of the others, but they are all probably the same. I did not link them, since I don't want a second link to be associated with these. Oh, and don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the first two, but even I know that creating those articles would be a really bad idea. - LA (T) 07:38, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

From The Belgariad/The Mallorean
There may be a few character articles, but mostly there is just a list. The first is a title that three characters had; the second is a holiday akin to Christmas. That would be all anyone could say on those two subjects.
  • Child of Dark
  • Erastide
From Highlander: The Series
These are all one shot characters that have appeared in one episode, at most two. Not notable enough for a seperate article. There is a character list, but it is so disorganized at the moment that redirects would be useless.
  • Brian Cullen
  • Claudia Jardine
  • Johnny Kelly
  • Kern (Highlander)
  • Michelle Webster
  • Steven Keane
  • Walter Graham
  • Warren Cochrane
  • William Kingsley
From Passage to Zarahemla
This is just one film, not even a series, so the characters do not need articles. I would suggest a list.
  • Adder
  • Brock McConnell
  • Grandpa Lee
  • Hitch
  • Kiddoni
  • Lobo
  • Natasha
  • Sakerra McConnell
  • Spree
Having taken a look at the above list, I completely concur with your reasoning. These articles should be removed from the list right away. And don't feel like you'll "step on my toes" by doing so. If I disagreed with any removals, I'd just come to your talkpage to talk about it. S. Dean Jameson 12:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

I requested this not because I feel it noteworthy, but because finding information on it is a pain in the... erm (not sure of language policy). It yields few, if any results in google etc, and I have no idea how to use wiki aside from copying formats others use and editing the information to read something different. Not enough to make an article or even a stub. I have 20 or so issues from 1939 to 1945 if information is needed from the books themselves. They have a wealth of tech/historic info I want brought out there before they completely fall apart. --207.157.18.254 (talk) 20:27, 29 January 2009 (UTC) TJReply

TOClimit

edit

The Table of Contents at this page is currently limited to a depth of 2. While I understand that listing multiple sections of "A-H", "I-N", "O-R", "S-Z" can be very bulky, I think it makes sense to show as much of the full table of contents as possible to provide navigation aid particularly for this page. Because the categories overlap and have parent-child relationships, our failure to display the appropriate categories in the TOC seems to lead to frequent misfiling. I've BOLDly made an expansion now, but please revert if there are legitimate reasons to keep the TOC as-is. -Thibbs (talk) 17:03, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup desperately needed

edit

This page has accumulated a lot of cruft, including likely vanity and joke edits, plus childish vandalism (e.g. "poop head"). Also, some of the requests are blue-linked, meaning that an article of that name exists. These articles should be quickly evaluated, and the request removed or merged into the article's Talk page as appropriate. Some of the newly-created articles may be deletion candidates themselves. Last but not least, this Talk page itself is getting long and unwieldy, and probably ought to be auto-archived after a suitably long time-out. Whoever can clean up these Augean stables probably deserves a medal (or a wp:barnstar)! Reify-tech (talk) 13:34, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Roads & Kingdoms

edit

Hi all, I just posted an article request for Roads & Kingdoms, a New York-based online publication covering food, travel, and politics. I wanted to post here since I’m currently an intern with Roads & Kingdoms. I’ve carefully studied Wikipedia’s policies on disclosing conflicts of interest, and I will not make any direct contributions on articles related to the publication. I am not paid for my contributions.

I believe Roads & Kingdoms meets Wikipedia’s criteria for notability: It received the James Beard Foundation’s Publication of the Year Award in 2017, and Anthony Bourdain was the publication’s sole investor and editor-at-large. The company also produces online content for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown television series on the website Explore Parts Unknown.

The publication has received substantial coverage by The Wall Street Journal, American Journalism Review, Inc., and Vox Media’s Eater (all linked in the request). Any feedback on whether Roads & Kingdoms meets notability requirements is welcome, and I would be happy to work with editors on a draft of the article or answer any questions you have.

Thanks! WillA98 (talk) 14:48, 10 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
