Three-step move

A three step move from De.wiki or En.wikibooks to Commons to Meta to En.wiki would require someone to be an admin on Commons, Meta, and En.wiki. The current list of those people is below. MBisanz talk 07:39, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

"somewhere like the MediaWiki talk namespace"

Is there any reason pages can't just be imported to subpages of this one (e.g. Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Poe or Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/import/Poe)? --Dinoguy1000 (talk · contribs) as 67.58.229.153 (talk) 00:28, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

It should be possible. I'll try to test it. MBisanz talk 01:43, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
I see why now, you can't specify a subspace, so if you imported to the already often-used Wikipedia: namespace, you might collide with an existing page. MBisanz talk 01:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
All right, that's what I thought it could be, but I haven't tried importing anything yet myself. --Dinoguy1000 (talk · contribs) as 67.58.229.153 (talk) 08:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that's it. The MediaWiki talk namespace is sufficiently out-of-the-way that the chance of a title collision is almost zero. It's a pity that you can't specify the title of the destination page; it must be the same as that of the source page. Graham87 14:39, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

File: issues

So we can import File: pages, but the image won't transfer. This could be useful if moving an image here from another wiki we wanted to preserve the File: page history, but it still won't transfer the upload log attribution. Thoughts on what the page should say about this? MBisanz talk 02:02, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, just use copy-paste to copy the file attribution? If a file can be exported from one WMF wiki to another, then surely it can be placed on Commons, unless I'm missing something. Graham87 14:41, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Fair-use images can't go to Commons, though in their case, I don't see why they couldn't simply be reuploaded directly from the original image (assuming it's still available). Not that I know all that much about image policy, though... --Dinoguy1000 (talk · contribs) as 72.251.164.58 (talk) 20:40, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Importing pages ahead

I have, some months ago, successfully requested the importation of several pages on people around Goethe from the German Wikipedia for the sake of being able to translate and to upload them whenever I want. ArcAngel has removed not-English, empty categories from and placed a "Notenglish" and a "Userspace draft" tag on one of those pages, on 1 July. This has reminded me of the possibility that it could cause confusion when I do not translate such a page in my userspace, all-too long.

It is clear that somebody who could also be interested in translating such a page may be irritated when he sees that the page has already been imported into my userspace, because he might be deterred from requesting an importation into his own user space, and translating the page himself, through that. I have, so far, put up with this, thinking that an editor who would be interested in translating the same page could ask me about how far I have got with it. Now that ArcAngel has begun editing a userpage of me without asking me about the matter, before, I would like to know if somebody sees the possible confusion that my proceeding might evoke as a noteworthy problem and, if yes, what I should do to avoid such a problem. Is it principally possible to import one and the same page to the userspace of more than just one editor? --Hans Dunkelberg (talk) 03:30, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

No, I don't think it's a problem at all, as long as you add a message at the top (either through a template or just a textual note). some wikis have a transwiki namespace which can be used as a shared repository for transwikied pages; unfortunately it's not enabled on the English Wikipedia. Graham87 14:56, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank You. --Hans Dunkelberg (talk) 10:21, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Archive

The page now has an archive. If you don't agree, do feel free to revert. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:41, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I was going to do that at the end of the year for continuity, but that's splitting hairs right now, as it's so close to the end of the year already! Graham87 15:12, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

New system for adding requests

The only thing that I don't like about the new system for adding requests is that it doesn't allow the user to enter an edit summary. Is there any way this could be fixed? The only alternative I can think of is to use an input box. Graham87 15:29, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

OpenOffice.org Calc to MediaWiki

Is there any way to convert OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheets into MediaWiki format? Most of the tools I've seen on Wikipedia are for OpenOffice.org Writer. Allen (talk) 01:47, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps you can import them into Google Docs and then use the Spreadsheet-to-MediaWiki-table-Converter. Graham87 04:46, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
There are many more tools, some are listed at Wikipedia:Tools/Editing_tools#Wikisyntax_conversion_utilities. Regards, mabdul 01:49, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

how is this used

Hi, I'm thinking of translating an article from the German wikipedia to here. The article exists here already, but was stubbed then turned into a redirect. do I need to do an import, or can I just tag the page with the revision I took from the German wikipedia using a template? I'm just unclear on when this import process is supposed to be used. --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 15:14, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

An import shouldn't be done in this case because there is already history at the location. Just tag the talk page with {{Translated page}}. Imports should only be performed when there is no overlapping history. Graham87 02:36, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Articel made of two language versions

If you write an article based on eg a german and a polish article, how do you import both versions? -- Cherubino (talk) 08:54, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

You don't. Just write a textual note on the talk page saying that the English version of the page is a translation of the two language editions. Graham87 15:20, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

importer flag for Xaosflux

I try to help out in this area, but occasionally run in to requests not on our normal transwiki list, and will consider applying for an "importer" flag. Before advertising elsewhere I wanted to get any feedback from our only existing importers: @Graham87: and @RobLa:. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 12:48, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: I for one would support any such request you make; you've done a reat job on this page. Graham87 13:37, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
Also, for reference, in case you haven't already seen it, here's my request for the import right on Meta and relevant discussion on the English Wikipedia. Graham87 13:53, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Request for Importers access - Xaosflux

Greetings, I am requesting community approval for importers access. This access requires community approval. Of recent imports I am the second most active administrator processing WP:RFPI's. When presented with certain import requests, we currently only have two local editors capable of performing this function locally and I would like to help in this area. For those I haven't worked with much, I am a current administrator (since 2006) and bureaucrat (since 2016).

Some important points about this access:

Importers can import page histories directly from an export file. This can be used to process imports from any wiki, not just the limited transwiki list available to all administrators.
Import actions are logged, and imported history versions can be discriminated against native versions, however this requires a careful examination that many editors and readers would not readily be aware of.
Importers could manipulate the import file prior to uploading. This can be used to perform certain repairs of complex merge errors, but could also be used to erroneously or maliciously introduce inaccuracies to page histories. That last part is what requires trust that I have both the technical abilities to avoid or repair errors, and the integrity to not deliberately harm the project.

My primary expected use of this will be for completing editor requested imports from other WMF wiki's. Thank you for your consideration. — xaosflux Talk 14:40, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

A procedural comment: Importer status can be granted by Stewards on meta:Steward requests/Permissions, but a local consensus in support of such granting has to exist before they will act on it. Thus this discussion. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 14:57, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

SRP filed

Thank you all for your endorsements above, I've placed the granting request at meta:Steward_requests/Permissions#Miscellaneous_requests. As this is a non-standard permission, I'm open to any bureaucrat requesting removal of this on meta should I ever hit the administration lengthy inactivity criteria in the future. — xaosflux Talk 03:17, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

Importer right

Hi. Looking through the archives, it appears that requesting the import right is done in an ad-hoc process, once on this talk page and once on a different noticeboard. I noticed that the importer right isn't included in {{Requests for permissions}}, and was wondering if it should be, and if so, what page to link to? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 23:09, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: "Transwiki importer" access is included with sysop - but it is possible that a very special edge case could be made for some special project for a non-admin to have it. "Importer" is highly restricted, and I can't see we would ever approve it for a non-admin. Requests and grants for these groups are very rare, and have to be completed by a steward. Importer group requires an extremely high level of community support because there are many security and integrity related problems that can be caused with xmlupload. As far as process, what the stewards will be looking for in processing such a request is that a community approval took place that is: well attended, well supported, and highly publicized. There is no specific venue, however like other steward processed items notifications should include areas like Village Pumps. So as far as that template goes, I wouldn't list it there - just like we don't include other rare groups like "local stewards" or "researcher" - in the rare cases someone would need this access they would either already know how to go about it or would discuss it with people who do first. — xaosflux Talk 02:17, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Okay. Thanks for the explanation. Separately, I'm aware of researcher (see deleted history but not text, working with WMF) but what is a "local steward"? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 02:22, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: we don't use it, since we have global stewards. You can see all the local groups here: Special:ListGroupRights. Note (all) is anyone with an account or not, and (Users) is anyone with a registered account. — xaosflux Talk 15:22, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Oh, thanks --DannyS712 (talk) 15:22, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
