Category messages

edit

Is there an current effort to standardize the template messages that go on category pages? If not, do you want to start one? Rocket000 22:03, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aye, that probably needs to be done. I'll contact you on your talk page. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:27, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

For everyone else that's interested, you can find the project here → Wikipedia:Category message boxes. It's go time. Rocket000 09:04, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Project-space amboxes

edit

Currently the combination of {{ambox}} and other messageboxes looks odd. (Showcase: 1 2 3 4 5 6 ) I believe that either one should be modified to match the other. In this discussion David Levy suggested that the {{ambox}} should be modified to display a different style on project-space. I don't particularly agree with that idea, because we'd loose uniformity in amboxes. Personally I like the ambox a lot, and I think project-space templates should be modified to mimic (not copy) the ambox look. Perhaps an ambox with a different border?

What do you guys think? --Koert van der Veer (talk) 09:21, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I actually meant that we could modify some of the templates that utilize the ambox format (not the {{ambox}} template itself) to have a different style when transcluded in non-article namespaces. —David Levy 14:07, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry... My bad, sorry I didn't quote literally. Koert van der Veer (talk) 16:15, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I'm just clarifying.  :-) —David Levy 20:40, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
While I also am quite fond of the ambox appearance, I must stress the benefit of maintaining distinct styles for the individual namespaces. (This assists editors' understanding of how/where the templates should be used.)
The recent changeover unified the article message boxes (which previously utilized numerous clashing styles) under one consistent layout. The project page header tags, conversely, already have a longstanding, recognizable format. —David Levy 14:07, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree that we shouldn't dump either box, but I do think we should make the two match each other. Simply changing width, padding and margin would do the trick, especially if the left margin was increased to simulate a 'missing' left bar. --Koert van der Veer (talk) 16:12, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
What I'm suggesting would be comparable, but I feel that it would work better (because there would be no blank left margin). It makes more sense to match the simpler code used for the project header templates than it does to match the relatively complex code required to generate the colored bar (which isn't intended for non-article namespaces anyway).
Also keep in mind that most article message boxes shouldn't be used in other namespaces. Modifying the project header templates to make all ambox-based templates match would encourage improper transclusions. We'd be much better off modifying the handful of exceptions instead. —David Levy 20:40, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I had the same idea for the category namespace. I wanted the styles to remain separate but not to clash with each other either. Color can do a lot. You may get some ideas from the (now abandoned for lack of interest) WP:CMBOX's talk page. Rocket000 (talk) 03:22, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Main talk other

edit
From the (in)famous creator of the {{ambox}}, here comes a new meta-template:

I have coded up a solution for the message boxes that are used on several types of pages. Take a look at the {{main talk other}} template. It helps other templates detect what type of page they are on, so they can change appearance. And I think I have managed to make it really easy to use.

If you also need to detect category pages then there is a template for that too: {{main talk category other}}.

CSS namespace detection

edit

We have different colour standards for message boxes that go on different kinds of pages. However, some boxes are used on several kinds of pages. Thus I have been working with namespace detection so that a box can adapt and show the right colours on each type of page.

First I came up with the template {{main talk other}} which works well. But now I have discovered that we can also do such detection in CSS only, which in some cases might be even better. But I am still pondering exactly how and when we could best use CSS namespace detection.

Anyway, I have coded up an example of CSS namespace detection so that others can have a look.

Message box standardisation

edit

To standardise the look of message boxes in image space and category space we have now coded up some suggestions. See the new meta-templates {{imbox}} and {{cmbox}} and discuss the design for them at their talk pages.

I will announce this standardisation effort in the appropriate places here at Wikipedia during the next few days.

--David Göthberg (talk) 12:57, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Now we have coded up the {{tmbox}} for talk pages and the {{ombox}} for all other types of pages such as "Wikipedia:" pages. This means all the namespaces are covered. Everyone is invited to take a look at the new boxes and have a say at their talk pages.

As before, this looks wonderful. Much thanks for all your effort in this area :) -- Quiddity (talk) 19:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template naming conventions

edit

I've suggested standardizing template naming, at Wikipedia talk:Template namespace#Template naming conventions. If you're frustrated with typing template names and constantly guessing at the right capitalization and spacing, please chime in. Michael Z. 2009-01-10 17:46 z
