Wikipedia talk:Tip of the day/June 30, 2006

This tip does not work. Putting {{subst:Username/signature}} in the Nickname field, with Raw Signature option checked causes the wiki process to crash with the message "mOptions not defined". BigE1977 17:37, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Did you try it? It worked for everyone who tried it. --GeorgeMoneyTalk  Contribs 17:57, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
It worked for me as well. --Siva1979Talk to me 19:36, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Known issue that's since been fixed in source control, but the fix hasn't gone live at present. Rob Church (talk) 01:47, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is it just me, or has "june 30, 2006" not happened yet? Shaggorama 08:23, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Just a little comment) Then, if they are made so far in advance, that kinda spoils the ..."Of the day" part of it, don't you think? TeChGuY 12:18, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Poor HTML

edit

Why are we recommending the use of Frontpage for the creation of signatures? What we will end up with is gems like these (no offense to the sig-holder, just a pertinent example I saw):

[[User:Pádraic_MacUidhir|<font color="006400">'''P'''</font><font color="4B0082">'''.'''</font><font color="008000">'''M'''</font><font color="008000">'''a'''</font><font color="008000">'''c'''</font><font color="228B22">'''U'''</font><font color="228B22">'''i'''</font><font color="228B22">'''d'''</font><font color="228B22">'''h'''</font><font color="228B22">'''i'''</font><font co

It's a very inefficient use of resources (and this isn't something anal; sigs aren't very crucial to the operation of the encyclopaedia), and will cause the produced signatures to violate WP:SIG. This is a baaadddd idea. (I don't know about Nvu, though; from what I've heard, it might be good...might.) Johnleemk | Talk 16:24, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure how to make this better without turning it into a somewhat detailed HTML tutorial. FreplySpang 16:31, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
It shouldn't be too hard to find a simple HTML guide for beginners out there. Just link to it. Another thing we might be able to do is to suggest that people cut out the duplicate bits before pasting the HTML code in. Either way, this is probably just going to annoy people - if they want their damn sig, they'll have their damn sig! I propose rewriting this tip to emphasise the purpose of sig customisation, instead of the howto part, which is prioritising style over substance and MySpace over the encyclopaedia. Should be using css span tags, not the deprecated font tags. --Quiddity 19:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
