Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/March 25, 2007
Possibilities for image:
- Use one of the fair use images in the article that have a source and good fair use justifications.
- Find a picture taken on behalf of the U.S. government at the Olympics or some other event.
- The Featured Article on the Main Page looks looks fine without an image. It is quite fine and not the end of the world having no image.
- Use an image of Jim Thorpe and hope no one notices.

- That's very helpful, Centrx. --74.14.20.22 08:09, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed. Anyway I've now added a freely-licensed image previously uploaded to the article. Michaelas10Respect my authoritah 13:31, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- You cannot just go image-less. I say, put up the pictogram of swimming for now, and if you find an alternative, switch it out. It's a good enough representation of Ian Thorpe as a swimmer, and it's a nice pictogram, too. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 14:04, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- And I thought the images were removed because of their....revealing contents. — Deckiller 15:12, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Haha, that's what I thought initially too! Since you're an admin, could you add the pictogram to the page? It won't hurt having it there. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 15:17, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- How about this image: Image:Ian Thorpe dq.jpg? — Deckiller 15:32, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It's copyrighted. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 15:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Added pictogram. I wonder how long it'll stay? — Deckiller 15:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Might wanna change that to use the normal format for FA images (float:left;margin-right:0.9em, caption, etc). --- RockMFR 15:38, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Fixed. — Deckiller 15:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it looks like Raul654, our ratified featured article director, as spoken.[1] Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well I'm a little confused, though. It seems that we should be using the free use image over the fair use image. While it isn't of Thorpe himself, it sure is good enough. I'm not too caught up on FA-on-the-main-page policy, but from what I know, fair use images shouldn't be used. I say we change it back, even though this is a good image of the subject of the article.... I don't know. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:04, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- We have no free image. We do not know the original source of Image:ThorpeCC.jpg and have no evidence that it is in fact free. —Centrx→talk • 16:21, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm confused too. I don't like the idea of an unfree image on the main page but, even if Raul654 thinks we should go for a copyrighted one, is a picture of him being disqualified the best we can do? Will (aka Wimt) 16:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Haha, I hadn't even noticed that. That's funny, but sad that we have to stoop to that level: fair use and a DQing pic! └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Raul654 does not have the final word on copyright.Genisock2 16:15, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I dropped him a message with a piece of my mind earlier; not to be rude, but just to tell him that he totally ignored the discussion here. Anyway, so what does everyone else here think about image choice? └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:20, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Indeed the pictogram is stupid - we are not obliged to have a picture. Using a stupid diagram for the sake of having a picture, as is using an irrelevant unfree picture. We should not be afraid to admit we have no free picture of Ian Thorpe, perhaps it will encourage on of the thousands of visitors to the Main Page to upload one. ed g2s • talk 16:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I guess we can't put on the main page? —Centrx→talk • 16:27, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well we don't need to look desperate... it's still a good article. ed g2s • talk 16:29, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- the text doesn't scale that small (ok it does it's an svg but you can't see it).Geni 16:31, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- For future reference, it would be larger on the FA, 100px. —Centrx→talk • 16:37, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

- I don't understand why the pictogram idea is so "stupid." (Indeed that is an insult to my colleague who created that image and the whole series for the Olympics.) I think, while trivial, the image fills the space where one would normally expect there to be a picture. I think having the pictogram there will tell users that there is a problem with our image selection choice, but I don't remember the last time we had to go image-less, and I really don't think we should. I, as much as you, would love to have an alternate image. This is only a space filler, indeed, but much better than the one suggested above. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:32, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Endorsed. We have many thousands of viewers here, hopefully an image will be retrieved before the end of the day. A "replace this image" notice will stay only on the main article by then. Michaelas10Respect my authoritah 16:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I don't think leaving a blank space is suggestive enough to get users to upload an image. And the "have you seen me" image is just out of the question. Which leaves a fair use image, or the pictogram. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 16:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, this is the second time in the last month that an image was removed from a TFA template due to copyright concerns (Cricket World Cup was the first). My question is: Why are we doing this when the article is currently posted on the main page instead of dealing with it when it is always shown beforehand on Main Page/Tomorrow and the TFA archive? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps if we'd appoint a certain groups of users who'll be in charge of free-license confirming? I won't be surprised if such image licensing issues have occurred on other sections of the main page before. We need further monitoring. Michaelas10Respect my authoritah 17:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- This may be neither here nor there, but his agency has a page with several images of him here [2]. I know that in some cases, the use of images is okayed because they're intended for promotional purposes - don't know if that would apply to these images, or if that's even germane to this discussion. But if that helps, there it is.Venicemenace 18:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- The website doesn't provide its content license and thus is copyrighted unless stated otherwise. Use of fair use ("promotional") images on the main page is highly discouraged, especially since this one is very likely to be replaced with a freely-licensed image. In case you can find a public domain or other freely-licensed of him, it'll be very appreciated. Michaelas10Respect my authoritah 18:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Couldn't we just use Image:IanThorpe1999.jpg as it's in commons?--Wizardman 19:57, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

- normaly we manage to get a solidy free image in advance. In this case we were unlucky in that what we thought were free images turned out not be.Geni 20:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
I think the current picture, Image:Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre.jpg, is stunning. It is free, and though it isn't of him, it is a photo that is very relevent to him. I have been watching the picture change over the day, and I think that this is the best solution we have had. J Milburn 21:27, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- really? it's a nice picture, but at that small size its just vaguely a pool... which turns out to be set up for water polo. i think the pictogram, although less colourful, is simpler and more representative of Thorpe as a swimmer. although i don't know if that much matters anymore since the day is almost over in UTC. --Someones life 22:15, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I say, we have an hour and a half, which is long enough to switch it to the pictogram. The present one is an inaccurate picture, and the pictogram is a good enough representation. Someone be bold and do it because I cannot. └Jared┘┌talk┐ 22:35, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Suggest image addition
editSuggest Image:Ian Thorpe on a plane cropped.jpg be used as a replacement image. Not ideal, but it now in use on the article, so having it on the archive page as well would seem sensible. Carcharoth 13:53, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
