Merging

I'm going to merge Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Translators with this page. But about the users liste, should I move them, or easier just delete them? CG 17:59, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

New templates

For translators and other editors on more than one Wikipedia, I've created two new user templates. They are both based upon {{user-c}} (which is a compressed version of {{user}}).

If the user name is the same for both Wikipedias you can use {{user-t}}. Type {{user-t|username|wp}}, where wp is the subdomain of the other Wikipedia (e.g. ja for the Japanese Wikipedia at http://ja.wikipedia.org).

If your user name is different for the two wikipedias, you would use {{user-t2}}. Type {{user-t2|username|wp|username2}}, where username2 is the user name on the second wikipedia.

{{user-t}} now allows you to use an optional third parameter for the alternate name on the other system.

Time to purge some of this list?

I was going through the list, checking anyone without a user page, and then welcoming those editors who hadn't been welcomed. I'm roughly 1/4 through the list, and have already found several entries for editors who did not exist at all. Some of them were probably joke entries (user:MellowYellowFellow), but I have no idea concerning some of the other nonexistent editors.

Once those editors are weeded out, I think there are probably several other classes of editors that should be weeded out. Here are some suggestions on who might be removed from the list of available translators.

  1. Anyone listed at Missing Wikipedians who hasn't edited in at least two months and has a goodbye message on their talk page
  2. Anyone who has been permanently banned (I think I saw at least one of those) check Wikipedia:List of banned users
  3. Anyone who has only edited this page and their user page and hasn't done any editing in at least six months
  4. Anyone who has ignored a translation request and hasn't edited in at least two months.

Was anything ever done about this? I've been coming across a lot of long-gone people in my hunts for translators, and they're really exaggerating the number of available ones. I can go through and see what I can do to clean it up (and add talk page notes), but... Can it have a general timeframe of two months, rather than the various qualifications? Six months without edits is a long time; I highly doubt they'd still be checking their talk page, even if there's no goodbye message. Heck, I'd prefer one month even, but can understand that could be a little pre-emptive. Perhaps one month with goodbye, two otherwise? -Bbik 21:40, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Proposal: Unless there's some serious objections, since I'm fairly actively working on WP:PNT, I plan on being on and off this page quite a bit, and I propose doing the following in order to make this list actually usable:

  1. Remove names who have not made any Wikipedia edits in the past year.
  2. Anyone not having edits between 2 months and 1 year will be marked "inactive"
  3. Users with edits w/in 2 months will be marked "active"
  4. Users who I have contacted and have reiterated their willingess to help will be marked "available as of [date]"

Since the list easily gets out of date, I think it would be best to install <DynamicPageList> and use it here. That way, you can see who has recently added the babel box to their userpage. --Steinninn 17:26, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

"Imagine Peace" page needs help

My apologies if this is the wrong place for this posting.

Imagine Peace Tower can use translations of the English phrase "Imagine Peace" into world languages not yet represented either among the 24 on the monument itself or in the special WP section for other languages. If there is a choice of wording, select that most in use by ordinary speakers of the language. Display this in the language's usual script if possible, and where applicable put all in upper case. I'm sorting through the list to see who's been active and who's not. In the process, I'm changing the format to make it a little easier to find out if the person has any recent contributions.

You can see what I did at the first third or so. I was doing the languages in alphabetical order, so "Hebrew to English" is the next one.
I eventually decided that anyone who's edited (at all) this year is "Users active in 2011", and anyone who hasn't is "Users inactive since 2010" (or some such label; I kept changing my mind, and you can use whatever seems sensible to you). I thought that identifying the year would be helpful if it's a long time before anyone sorts through the list again. I wasn't super strict about activity, so if a person only made one edit this year, and there were lots of active editors in that language, then I might call that person "inactive", but usually I thought that one edit was enough to "count".
Also, I changed the format from [[User:Example|Example]] to {{User|Example}}. I mostly follow that with (space)(em-dash)(space) and then whatever text they gave. If the username isn't "English", and the person gave an English-like name (see "JohnMet" in the Greek section for an example), then I thought it was useful to provide the English transliteration.

My pleasure. I made a quick python script to substitute the wikilinks with the template, the tricky part was the space between the userlink and the beggining of the description. I've made it so the description begins when the character is not space, comma or dash anymore, which I think covers all current cases. Mostly, I think that we need to recruit ourselves some more Gujarati-speaking editors. If we haven't got anyone, then we haven't got anyone. We could skip the labels (it's only one name).
I was doing this mostly by hand, with nothing more automated than search-and-replace. It's fantastic that you can do some of this with a script. I'm happy to help clean up any stray problems. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:51, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Babel and Template automation

Just wondering why this section has so much verbiage rather than just using Babel ratings?

I could for example add myself into the list of Translaters available French to English

and also add myself into the list of Translaters available German to English

But would it not be more useful to have the following?

Translaters available into to English

Would it be possible to change the template to include multiple languages?

Well, the Babel ratings aren't very readable. Someone who doesn't know anything about the templates would be utterly lost. Most people don't actually know the two-letter language codes for more than a couple of languages other than their own. Also, people are almost always looking for a person who reads Estonian (or whatever), not for a person who speaks multiple languages, so it makes sense to organize the list according to the target language. Finally, the current system allows people to easily provide additional information, like areas of speciality. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:13, 9 June 2011 (UTC)


An invitation to Wikipedia Open Translation Project

Hi, we are the operations team for Wikipedia Open Translation Project. (Plz let me know if such messages are not allowed to be posted here, thank you)

We are looking for people interested in joining the Wikipedia Anime/Disaster translation activities?

As you might know, there are much less articles in English on Anime and Manga than in the Japanese Wikipedia. Our goal is to close this gap and make the articles equally available in both languages by promoting Wikipedia translation activities.

We created a small-scale Wikipedia page with state-of-the-art translation tools and discussion pages. The discussion pages in the Wikipedia Open Translation Project site enable users with different language abilities to communicate with each other using machine translation.

For example, when translating a Wikipedia article on Anime and coming across a translation problem that even Google cannot solve, English speaking translators can use English to ask help in the discussion pages, where Japanese speaking experts can share their knowledge to help understand these problems. At the same time, English translators can master more authentic Japanese and improve their translation ability quickly. Translators can also make use of the Page Dictionary to include hard to translate words, and help future translators in their efforts.

Finally, we hope to lower the language barrier and bring together translators and experts all over the world to enhance the quality of the multilingual Wikipedia.

Besides Anime, we also imported Wikipedia articles on Natural Disasters. Please have a glance on them if you are interested in contributing to the translation activities. Our project is in it's early stages and we hope to receive your precious advice and comments.

Feedback request: VisualEditor special character inserter

The developers are working towards offering Wikipedia:VisualEditor to all users at about 50 Wikipedias that have complex language requirements. Many editors at these Wikipedias depend on being able to insert special characters to be able to write articles.

Manual or Bot cleanup possible?

Need a German translator, came here, found my way to Category:Translators en-de, great it lists 24! Except only three have been on Wiki in the past month (only one this week, guess who I'm going to bother?), seven have never edited Wikipedia beyond their userpage, and the rest have all gone inactive some time in the last fifteen years. Could we try to ensure this doesn't happen? Most people don't have the tenacity to click through 24 user profiles to hope one is active. Perhaps the templates could just be translate-de-2021, translate-de-2020, translate-de-inactive, etc? And then the category shows who has updated their profile categorization in this year, etc?
