Please let me edit the template writing the following: This article or section does not cite any references or sources. Because I'd like to use it in some sections that have no sources. Thank you.Brazilian Man (talk) 14:58, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Functionality that would allow diffs

I just started a discussion over at Wikipedia talk:Template messages/User talk namespace#Functionality that would allow diffs about a possible functionality that would allow the inclusion of diffs in uw-warnings. While users manually adding warnings probably wouldn't use this functionality, Twinkle could (I think).

When a user reverts an edit with Twinkle, a little popup window opens up with the reverted user's talkpage. When you go to the Twinkle menu and click "Warn", the "Warn" dialogue box comes up with the article name already prefilled. If the uw- templates also had a diff functionality, wouldn't it be possible to automatically add the revisionid of the reverted edit?

Please reply over at Wikipedia talk:Template messages/User talk namespace#Functionality that would allow diffs to keep this discussion centralised. Thanks! — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 16:28, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, let's have the discussion here, since specific integration with Twinkle is a programming issue, and not a template issue. The question I have, directed at Twinkle's developers is, can such a feature as Cymru.lass suggested be added to Twinkle, or would this be a functionality that would get left out (and if so, why would we pass over it)? SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:10, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
On a diff page, the revision ID is easily available - the revert/rollback feature retrieves it successfully, so I imagine it could pass the ID onto the warn module in the opened user talk page. If consensus is gained for the implementation of the functionality, and the code is written, etc., then this should not be too difficult to add in. — This, that, and the other (talk) 10:23, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Okay, then great! If we end up doing diff-specific templates, then we'll be back for it. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:33, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm pro-diffs inclusion. I notice Huggle users tend to fit in diffs much more nicely than with Twinkle, but it's been a while since I've done any Twinkling of that sort. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 14:16, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
I just realized exactly how easy this would be! Twinkle already grabs the revision ids for the edits reverted, and those are appended to the URL in the user talkpage edit form. (Example URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%20talk%3AEnjyman&action=edit&preview=yes&vanarticle=Template%3APineapples%2Fdoc&vanarticlerevid=429754192&vanarticlegoodrevid=371990550&type=agf&count=1) — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 07:40, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
So is this a good idea to implement? If so, should this be moved back to requests for features? This discussion's gone a little stale.. — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 19:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
My original comment stands. If this is implemented in the templates, and people generally agree on its inclusion, it can be done. — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:03, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
I think it should be done. It sounds technically easy enough. A lot of new users aren't even aware that there is such a thing as a history page. This would point them to it. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:09, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

A problem with "Warn (user talk warnings)"

  Resolved

I'm having a problem regarding warning vandals using Twinkle. There are two drop down menus, one to determine the level of the warning, and the second to list the specific template to use. But when I use Twinkle, the second drop down menu has no items; it is completely blank. How can I solve this problem? Bryce53 | talk 03:51, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

That is not enough information to help you. Which browser are you using, which version, which OS, any errors in your javascript console? See also WP:TW/DOC#Trouble. What page are you on when this happens? What happens if you change the warning level? Amalthea 09:23, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Does this help? Bryce53 | talk 10:34, 29 June 2011 (UTC) thumb|450px|center|See? Nothing there!
No, I don't think that will help much. Can you answer Amalthea's questions instead? -- John of Reading (talk) 10:40, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
No problem. I use Firefox 5, Windows 7, and I manually added the gadget in my preferences. This happens on every single page. Nothing happens if I change the warning level. Hope this helps. Bryce53 | talk 11:12, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Hmm. Curious, standard setup, possibly the most typical one for Twinkle users, should work without problems. We had a problem with IE9 that was similar to yours, that's what I was hoping for. Most likely explanation now is some interference with something else. First, can you check your javascript error console for Twinkle-related errors (Ctrl+Shift+J, or see WP:TW/DOC#Trouble)? If there's nothing there, can you list which other gadgets you have activated, or maybe try turning them off? If nothing, do you have browser plugins that might get in the way (AdBlock can e.g. sometimes interfere with NAVPOP)? Do you have personal firewalls enabled that may scan or sanitize web pages (someone once had a problem with that in Twinkle v1)? Amalthea 11:49, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
I turned all of my gadgets off and then back on. The problem is now fixed; thanks. Bryce53 | talk 00:35, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Duplicate tagging

When a tag is already on the page twinkle usually excludes it. It doesn't seem to realize this for Fancruft vs. overdetailed and All plot vs. allplotXeworlebi (talk) 17:25, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure it does because I sometimes see "Info: Found on the article already...excluding" during tagging. Xeworlebi (talk) 21:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Delsort with new twinkle changes?

Delsort should still work with the old morebits. Try putting this line of code before your delsort importScript line:
importScript('User:AzaToth/morebits.js');
Upgrading it is on the to-do list, however the delsort code is in a far worse state than FurMe is, so it's not a priority. — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:10, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
I've tried with the morebits script and it still doesn't work. Any busy editors who do NPP or any admins who have to relist AfDs will truly welcome the return of this feature. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:40, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I've gotten it to work using the following scripts:

//--- For delsort ---\\
importScript('User:AzaToth/morebits.js');
//importScript('User:AzaToth/twinklefluff.js');
importScript('Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Add LI menu');
importStylesheet('Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Add LI menu/css');

Meh...warned and forgotten. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:07, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
(ec)The talk page message you left him is certainly the right first step. All else will depend on how he reacts. And, using Twinkle reverts in content editing isn't by itself problematic. It's only disruptive/inappropriate to incorrectly revert other edits as vandalism, or to revert without an edit summary. Amalthea 15:08, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Ahh, excuse me then. I was under the impression that using anything other then "undo" in content disputes was generally frowned upon. Or is that rollback? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:10, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Probably depends on who you ask. :) Plain MediaWiki rollback doesn't allow to leave an edit summary and is for that reason reserved for clearly nonconstructive edits (or anything that doesn't need an explanation). As I see it, any other way to revert another editors good-faithed changes without explanation, be it manual editing or MediaWiki undo or Twinkle, is just as problematic. Providing an explanation is the key. Amalthea 15:18, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion - notify wikiproject when prodding

I think it can save many articles - notify wikiprojects with notices in talkpage when prodding Bulwersator (talk) 16:04, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Deleting talk pages: needs a prompt

  Resolved

When deleting article pages, manual deletion offers a prompt when a talk page exists. Twinkle does not and causes a lot of admins (including me) to forget to delete the talk page. Can this be addressed in Twinkle? --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:42, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Soft redirects

  Resolved

Currently, soft redirects can not be automatically sent to RFD because Twinkle doesn't recognise them as redirects. I tried to nominate a page that contains Category redirect but it wouldn't let me. Can this be fixed? Also, it would have saved me wasting my time typing out my message for the RFD if Twinkle hadn't given me the choice to nominate it in an "incorrect" forum in the first place. Redirects on talk pages confuse Twinkle

  Resolved

Subject says it all really, but there's a story too.

A new user creates an article (blatant self-promotion) by writing it on his talk page. When he feels its ready for prime time, he moves his talk page to the article namespace, leaving a redirect behind from his talk page to the spam article. I catch the article on Huggle, speedy it, and indefblock the user for having an inappropriate username (same as the organization being promoted). I leave a template with Twinkle notifying the user of the block. But since the talk page is a redirect, Twinkle recreated the speedied article (target of the redirect) with the block template as the contents. Whoops. --causa sui (talk) 06:38, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

It's an edge case (to say the least!), and would take a fair bit of work within Twinkle to fix. I personally don't think it's worth fixing. — This, that, and the other (talk) 08:14, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Deletion in categories

The two tabs "d-batch" and "transverse" have given some odd behaviour. I tried to delete some images with "d-batch" and got "Error: nothing to delete, aborting" - when there were clearly 3 images in the category - does it only work with text pages? Changing to "transverse" - It worked, but with an error message each time, which meant that after deletion it failed to move to the next image. The set of messages is...

Deleting image: done
Grabbing image links: The title parameter must be set
Skipped: File:Viminol.svg
Deleting image: done
Grabbing image links: The title parameter must be set
Skipped: File:WIN55212-2.svg
Deleting image: done
Grabbing image links: The title parameter must be set

The "skipped" line is because I had to hit "delete" and then "skip" for every image.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:43, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

You should use "deli-batch" to batch-delete files. — This, that, and the other (talk) 03:16, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
OK, I'll use that next time, but "transverse" used to work OK - i.e press delete, and it deleted and moved to the preview of the next file.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:18, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

FurMe news

I'm sure many of you are wondering how FurMe is coming along. Here's a status report:

 • FurMe's file tagging functionality is now available in Twinkle. It uses the same infrastructure as Twinkle's article and redirect tagging. Enjoy it, and please report any issues on this page.
 • Work on the FUR/license part of FurMe is taking a long time. I was away from my computer for two weeks recently, and I don't envisage that I will have much time to finish work on it in the near future. Apologies for any inconvenience. If anyone thinks they could lend a hand (beware, it's mightily unfriendly code!), you could look at the furme branch of Twinkle's tree on github.

In the meantime, avid FurMe users can continue to use AWeenieMan's original, outdated FurMe script. You can do so by including the following code at Special:MyPage/skin.js:

importScript("User:AzaToth/morebits.js");
importScript("User:AWeenieMan/furme.js");

This will make the old FurMe come back, but it is subject to break at any time, as it is not being maintained (and has not been since 2008, I believe).

Modifying twinkle with custom code

Is it possible to make a few custom scripts to add functionality to twinkle? (for a single user, atleast for the period of development) Specifically, I want to have edits in the RCP marked (by a different colour maybe)

 • if they are not the current version. (and if the current version is by an IP/newbie) (helps focus on unreviewed vandalism)
 • pages with less than a certain number of watchers.

Surely those can both be done with non-Twinkle JavaScript? The API is pretty powerful. –Drilnoth (T/C) 12:44, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Eh, for # of users watching a page I think you'd have to scrape [2] if Ajax allows for it. The API doesn't appear to expose the count. I could try to whip up some JS sometime, but I don't know what kind of timeframe I'd be able to work on it. –Drilnoth (T/C) 12:52, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Rollback?

I've noticed Twinkle adds several undo features to page history and diffs, which I like, but it marks them as "Rollback", which causes confusion with Wikipedia's Rollback feature, which is not available to the general public. I think that it should be changed to help solve confusion. --Nathan2055talk 21:25, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

I don't think it's worth the trouble to change. It is a rollback feature, and it lives in a different spot than the native rollback feature. In other words, I don't see where the experienced user (the only kind who would get native rollback access) should be confused about this. SchuminWeb (Talk) 22:52, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm new, and I was confused about it. "Rollback" is the ability to undo an edit in one click without providing a summary. "Revert" or "Undo" is reverting an edit and providing a summary. I think Twinkle does the second thing. --Nathan2055talk 23:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Rollback definitely can use an edit summary. See User:Gracenotes/rollback.js for instance. mc10 (t/c) 20:15, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
yeah, must is more like it. It has a default one that is actually quite a pain to change and if you use rollbacker without an edit summary, you may just lose your rollbacker privileges. --Doug.(talk contribs) 20:21, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
(ec)It is confusing. The reasons are mostly historical and it could be changed, but the distinction isn't as you suggest. Reverting is simply "undoing" of which "rollback" is a special type that undoes multiple edits by a single user. Twinkle Rollback and Rollbacker user right both do this but the user right does it server-side and doesn't require going though the undo diff page and adding an edit summary. Twinkle does (but hides this in the background through the script). End result, Twinkle is much easier to put in a custom summary, Rollbacker is much faster from the time you click "rollback" to the time that the edit actually saves; thus if you are racing to rollback vandalism, use Rollbacker, if you are doing a lot of reverting of IPs changing uncited dates or other not-clearly spam edits, use Twinkle (unless you're keen on losing your Rollback privileges). But you are right, these things could use more explanation and maybe more disambiguation in their names.--Doug.(talk contribs) 20:19, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Using on a non-wikipedia wiki

Hi, I'd like to use Twinkle on a Wikia wiki. Is there a way to do this?--Technobliterator (talk) 12:48, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Twinkle is just a giant lump of javascript. Pretty much all you need to do is copy and paste whatever is here and make some modifications (I think). --Σ talkcontribs 02:02, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't go as far as to say that. Yes, it's easy enough to copy over the code, however:
All of the templates TW uses exist locally on Wikipedia, outside of the TW code you would get from following the link and copying the code.
TW is specificly tailored to those templates, knows exactly where to go for each one, and may not function properly or even at all if it can't find some of them.
Wikipedia runs off of a build of the software that is different from the one you are likely using, and this may also confuse TW.
Small changes are made all the time to fix errors in TW. Those changes would only take effect instantly on English Wikipedia, and you would have to manually update the code on your Wikia each time it changes in order to have as stable a version as the Wikipedia one.
Recently another language Wikipedia asked a similar question, and recieved a similar answer. It would take a massive effort by a team of talented programmers to adapt TW to other Wikipedias, although it is possible. I would have to think it would be even more difficult to pull off for a Wikia, however you are welcome to try. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:28, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

I've done more work in file backlogs than most, and when I come across bad tags, which happens often enough and for a variety of reasons, I just fix it and move on. This would create a lot of work for an already overworked TW team, and honestly wouldn't make the lives of the file gnomes much easier. Misdone TW tags account for relatively little of the mistagging I come across. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:19, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

FURME intergration...

Some suggestions :

 • Use the new name style type rationale templates over the old types.
 • Implement an option for - Syntax and options for all practical purposes are virtually identical to those for , the only difference being the name of the rationale template used,

so the code could be added with VERY minor modifications.

Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:32, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

 • FurMe had/has functions divided under two tabs, the "tags" tab and the "fur" tab. The functions under the "tags" tab have been integrated into Twinkle, under TW's "Tag" tab, however the stuff under the "fur" tab has not been integrated yet. While your ideas are good, this might not be the place to ask for them, the original developer or custodians of FurMe would have to do it. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:55, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

"When opening a user talk page, open it"

On Twinkle preferences, there is currently an option that starts with, "When opening a user talk page, open it" and has the options of new tab, new window replacing other talks, and totally new window. Is it possible to add a fourth option to this to the effect of "Do not open user talk pages automatically"? I would select such an option, because if I want to drop a talk message, I will do so separately, mainly because I don't want windows popping out at me. Can we implement this? About the upgrade to Twinkle

This section appeared at the top of WT:TW for several months.

Prompted by the short-lived switchover to MediaWiki's HTML5-compliant mode on Wikipedia (see Twinkle bug 441), Twinkle developers have been working for some months on an overhaul of the tool, as well as AzaToth's morebits.js script library. This development has been taking place off-wiki, at a github repository. Work was started by UncleDouggie and Tcncv, and continued by AzaToth (Twinkle's inventor) and This, that and the other.

Users of Twinkle will be able to take advantage of many improvements, including:

 • Transition to the MediaWiki API. Previously, Twinkle used to download the same editing form as is used by human editors, fill it out behind-the-scenes, and send the request back as if the "Save page" button had been clicked. This was unreliable – if the format of the edit form was modified, or if malformed editnotices were present, Twinkle failed. Now, Twinkle uses the MediaWiki API to edit pages, a more solid approach specially designed for programs and scripts like Twinkle.
 • New look. Twinkle now has a refreshed look, based on jQuery UI.
 • Now works on Internet Explorer 9 (with very minor limitations, e.g. not being able to move the dialogs).
 • Lots of new features. You can now: tag a page with a protection lock using the RPP tool (for all users, not just admins); preview user warning templates before posting the warning; notify users about an AN/ANI discussion using the Talkback tool; enable a "userspace log" to keep track of your speedy and PROD nominations (huge thanks to Timotheus Canens for originally writing this); and customize your Twinkle easily, with a graphical interface instead of editing code (see WP:TWPREFS).
 • Lots of new admin stuff. Admins can now: rest easy when protecting using the PP tool - it has been redesigned, and you have full control over what it does; opt not to delete the talk page and/or redirects when using the CSD tool; edit the deletion reason before deleting with the CSD tool.
 • And lots more minor annoyances and nits have been fixed. (and some more have been introduced... please tell us if you find any we don't already know about)

Developers of scripts that use the morebits.js library should take note of the following two important points:

 • Obsolescence of Wikipedia.wiki and replacement with Wikipedia.page
 • Changes to loading of morebits.js. To harness the new functionality, gadgets can change their definition entry to look like GadgetName[ResourceLoader|dependencies=jquery.ui.dialog,jquery.tipsy]|morebits.js|morebits.css|GadgetName.js. Scripts stored in userspace can use mw.loader.using - ask us if you need any help implementing it.

For users and developers alike, if Twinkle stops working for you, or you have any other problems or questions, don't hesitate to ask them below. But see the top of this page for a list of known issues which are currently being investigated. Thanks, — This, that, and the other (talk)

Any possibility of adding a "Warn" link or tab to the native rollback results page? I find that I prefer to use native rollback with Lupin's AVT, but I still warn the vandal with Twinkle because it offers the full range of uw-* templates. However, to do so, I have to copy the article name, manually navigate to the user's talk page, and paste the article name in the TW warning box. A link to warn directly from the native rollback results page, or at least to pass the article information to the user's talk page, would be wonderful. --Darkwind (talk) 08:34, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

I'd love an option to auto-warn a user when reverting vandalism. Perhaps it could even report the user to AIV once they reach level 4? --Nathan2055talk 17:22, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking that a "warn" link, possibly next to the "welcome" link, would be really helpful. SchuminWeb (Talk) 17:24, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
The welcome link doesn't appear on the native rollback results page either. Twinkle doesn't seem to be (currently) aware of that page at all. As for warning from diffs (where the welcome link currently appears), that's already handled by TW auto-opening the talk page during the reversion, and you click the warn tab there. --Darkwind (talk) 00:28, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Feature requests from Nathan2055

I have a few feature requests for Twinkle:

 • I'd like there to be an option to remove the new revert links in diffs, and an option to remove or keep the welcome links even if it's disabled.
 • I'd like to be able to use the tag feature in all namespaces. Sometimes I need to mark a draft for review, and Twinkle would make it super-easy.

Thanks for making such a great tool! --Nathan2055talk 21:21, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Oh, wait. I found the option to remove the links in my WP:TWPREFS. I'm not sure if there is a way to keep the welcome links, though. Also, is it possible to leave an edit summary for all three types of rollbacks, or just the regular rollback? --Nathan2055talk 17:35, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
There is no way to remove welcome links from diff pages, so they should always be there for edits made by users whose talk page does not exist. Also, it is currently not possible to enable a custom edit summary for vandal rollbacks; I think AGF rollback always asks for a summary, and vandal rollback never does - are you asking for an edit summary prompt for vandal rollbacks? — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:05, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
AGF rollback does offer the editor an opportunity to add a summary. However, I don't see the purpose of having the option for one on vandal rollback. I mean, what else are you going to say besides that it's vandalism? It's vandalism, and the summary already adds that. We presume that the reason you're hitting the vandalism button is because it clearly is vandalism, and that's the reason you're reverting it. If you're doing rollback for any other reason, you shouldn't be using the vandal button. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:08, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
I have added your second feature request, and it will appear on-wiki shortly. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:45, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Unintentional blanking

Twice today, I've used Twinkle to make an edit. Both times, my edit was followed up with by a blanking edit that I did not authorize. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:16, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Were you doing multiple processes with Twinkle at once to the same page? I had that happen to me (diff) when I was nominating many files for deletion at once, and Twinkle overwrote some nominations that it did with the other nomination, since they were all done at the same time, and presumably pulled the same revision as a basis for its edit. If my reading of the issue is correct, it sounds like we're working faster than Twinkle is able to keep up with, and that's causing the problem. In other words, it's more of a human problem rather than a Twinkle problem. SchuminWeb (Talk) 19:22, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
No, I wasn't using Twinkle for more than one thing at a time. Maybe I was editing other things too quickly at the same time? – Muboshgu (talk) 19:32, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I notice that the second edit is 59 seconds after the first edit; This doesn't seem to be possible. AzaToth 19:37, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I noticed it too, which is what makes me think it's a Twinkle issue and not a human error on my part. I definitely didn't click Twinkle to make the same edit a second time a minute after the first one. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:44, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
It happened again. This time, I noticed that I was editing another page (manually) in a separate window and the edit timed out as the Twinkle error was happening. I suspect it might be a Wikipedia server issue. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:08, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

I've used customized versions of Twinkle and/or Friendly for years. My current custom installation of the old version had been working fine until now. I'd like to use a customized version of the new Twinkle/Friendly. My attempts to get an unmodified version which I copied into userspace (an alternate account) to work have ranged from partially to completely unsuccessful. Can someone tell me exactly what to put where? To quote Denzel Washington, "explain it to me like I'm a four-year-old." Thanks. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:55, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

If you do make your own personal copy of Twinkle, you should frequently check the commit log of our github repository to keep your copy up to date.
importScript("User:Mandarax/twinkle.js");
Or if you made your own copy of morebits as well:
importStylesheet("User:Mandarax/morebits.css");
importScript("User:Mandarax/morebits.js");
importScript("User:Mandarax/twinkle.js");
I hope this helps. — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:21, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I tried it with an unmodified version to see if I could get it working. The first suggestion, just importing my copy of Twinkle, doesn't work at all. I had tried this prior to asking for help here and couldn't figure out how to correctly import the MediaWiki version of morebits, but never tried making my own copy. Your suggestion of using my copy of morebits partially works. Things like "rollback" and "restore this version" work, but most of the tabs do not. The "arv" tab gives me dropdowns (AIV, UAA, and 2 SPIs) and a blank "Work area" with no other options. Most tabs, including the following, do absolutely nothing when clicked: "warn", "wel", "csd", "xfd", and "rpp". MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 05:09, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Ah, yes... sounds familiar. I encounter that problem from time to time when testing Twinkle improvements. Writing a good loading system was one of the biggest challenges of implementing Twinkle as a gadget. One of the trade-offs of the current system is that modular loading has become impossible. At User:This, that and the other/twinkle.js, you can see a rather hacked-up version of a loader that was written by UncleDouggie earlier this year when we were still trying to decide what to do. You might like to play with that (and look through earlier revisions) - but, I warn you... it's some serious JavaScript.
On the whole, this a fairly real problem, though. I know Amalthea has a personal wiki set up in which he can run a test version of Twinkle as a gadget, which is more than should be necessary for basic testing and customization. I'll look into figuring out a solution to this problem, as I would like it solved too. — This, that, and the other (talk) 08:13, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks again. I'm working on an alternate way to do what I want, so I'll probably be able to get by without this. (Besides, I always found it a hassle to update my customized version to mirror changes whenever they were made to the official version.) I had just asked because I thought there was a very easy way to do it that I just didn't know about, so please don't go to any extra trouble just for me. But you do say you'd like it solved too, so if you do, I'd certainly like to hear about it. The efforts of you and the others involved in this project are much appreciated! Saudi arabia

  Resolved

I really think that there are many points missing in the human rights section. I worked really hard to put in order everything so could you revert your deletion, please?

We can shorter the first section, if you like but I bellieve the rest is absolutely fine. The human rights section should be long because human rights violations in Saudi Arabia are severe and even apparently injust: judging a person without a proper trial, torturing them to agree what they're suppose to admit, even they're innocent, does not sound right whatsoever.

The article reads like praising the law system while it's being challenged in Saudi Arabia, beside severe punishments, and especially outside its borders by independent international organisations, too.

Also, you may not be able to access resources because access to them may be limited in your country, possibly Saudi Arabia. One of them is Amnesty International.

I referenced my section very well, giving a reference to all major points from recognised international organisations such as AI, FH, national SA NGOs among others so I see no reason to just delete it. Please, put it back. You may shorten them but the fact that so many aspect of human activity is limited must be reflected by the article, you see, otherwise its value will be very low. --Rejedef (talk) 01:46, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

When an image is tagged for deletion, put a note on talk pages of articles where the file is used

See section title. :) Basically, right now an image can be nominated for deletion and editors of the article probably won't see any change until the image is actually deleted, because few users have images they didn't upload on their watchlist. Just a brief, one sentence note like "The file, <LINKTOFILE>, which is used in this article, has been <tagged/nominated> for <?speedy?> deletion. I enabled the clock, but I don't see it anywhere. --Nathan2055talk 16:10, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
If you're referring to the gadget This, that and the other recommended, it should be right next to the "Log out" link in the upper right corner of your screen. If you don't see it there, you may need to bypass your cache for it to appear. jcgoble3 (talk) 00:49, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Added it and bypassed my cache. No result. --Nathan2055talk 15:39, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Here's the problem. It doesn't work on the secure server. I've changed back, so it's fixed now. --Nathan2055talk 03:15, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

When I "tag" something it puts it on my watchlist - make it stop

  Resolved

Right, so when I use the "Tag" tab (from the FurMe merge) it adds whatever page I tagged to my watchlist. I can't figure out how to turn that off, and I really want to. Is there a way to do it that I'm just missing or is there no way to turn off the watchlisting? Sven Manguard Wha? 02:54, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Uncheck the option in the tag section at WP:TWPREFS, then clear your cache. --Nathan2055talk 03:13, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Talkback updates

I'd like two updates to be done to Twinkle's talkback functionality. First, I'd like messages that don't include a comment to not be auto-signed. I would also like there to be the ability to use TB on your own talk page so you can place talkbacks for ongoing discussions you are in that you don't want to add to your watchlist. Thanks! --Nathan2055talk 22:22, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Maybe I'm not understanding something here, but what would be the purpose of using TB on your own talk page? I thought the purpose of a TB was for someone else to leave the TB to trigger the bright orange "new messages" bar to let you know that they've replied to your message elsewhere. Why would you ever need to leave a TB notice for yourself? (That said, I love the error message you get when you try it.) jcgoble3 (talk) 23:53, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Read Template:Usertalkback. Some people would want to place talkbacks on their own talk page to track discussions you are in. The actual purpose of talkback is indicating you will answer a discussion where it started. That said, you are right. It's good to be able to trigger the new messages bar. But people want to tract their discussions, without cluttering their watchlist. Think about what would happen if you watched the Help desk. Ouch! The non-autosign is so people who have auto-archive make TB be treated as a template which can be removed, not a message. --Nathan2055talk 00:20, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
I still don't get it. I use Usertalkback on my own talk page to indicate where I respond, and I'm not understanding how it relates to leaving yourself a Talkback notice. They're two entirely different (though related) templates. If you want to track the discussions you're in, I would think it would be better and easier to just create a manual list on your user page or a subpage (or even at the top of your talk page). What purpose does placing Talkback notices on your own talk page accomplish that a simple manual list can't accomplish in a manner that's both cleaner and makes more sense to an observer (who might otherwise be wondering the same thing Twinkle says when you try it currently)? jcgoble3 (talk) 01:37, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I misunderstood the template. I thought it said you should put talkback on your own talk, it meant they should put talkback on your talk page. However, I still think two updates should be done:
 • A preference that allows you to choose whether the talkback is signed yet (automatically set to off).
 • An option to use talkbacktiny, whisperback, or ygm (and it's Twitter option) in the talkback dialog box.
Thanks! --Nathan2055talk 22:05, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

My first mentioned problem, Twinkle leaving signatures when placing talkbacks, turns out to be a glitch! It shouldn't leave signatures unless a note is added! It thinks if the note space is kept blank it should still add a signature! --Nathan2055talk 02:58, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

OK, I'll fix it. — This, that, and the other (talk) 03:17, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Bug when reverting changes to a category

  Resolved

When you revert changes to a category, the link seems to get two colons instead of one, e.g. User talk:88.130.8.217#August 2011. –CWenger (^@) 07:19, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, that's interesting. I've fixed this in the repository, but it won't become live until an admin synchronises the gadget here. Thanks for letting us know about this - I never would have noticed it, myself. — This, that, and the other (talk) 12:08, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Firefox and missing buttons

  Resolved

I just upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1, running on Mac OS 10.6.8. For some reason I have lost various buttons, which still appear when using Safari 5.1 and Opera 10.10. I have by-passed the cache running Firefox to no avail. I asked at WP:VPT and they could not replicate the problems and suggested I come here. The specifics are that I can still edit protected pages, delete pages and view deleted content etc. However in edit mode the "[rollback (AGF)] || [rollback] || [rollback (VANDAL)]" buttons are absent and the regular page buttons of "CSD/PROD/XFD/PP/Tag/Last/Unlink/Deli-batch" don't appear either. All these buttons are visible using Opera and Safari.

At VP I was asked "Do you see any JavaScript errors? (Go to Tools > Error Console)" to which the answer was essentially "no". (There were various en-Wiki related 'warnings', which are apparently "harmless"). Any suggestions gratefully received. Ben MacDui 09:12, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

I notice you are loading Twinkle from your skin JavaScript file. Perhaps you could try removing the Twinkle line from this file, and instead enable it as a gadget on your preferences page. I can't see why this would have broken, but it's worth a try. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:26, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
I have just done this and it seems to work! Many thanks. Ben MacDui 17:13, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
I have noticed that they sometimes don't appear as well. The links to rollback or welcome don't always appear either (though my admin rollback link is always there of course) and when I do rollback it opens the other user's talk page in edit mode but does not open a warning window (which I rarely use anyway as I prefer to welcome-vandal - but I don't need it to open the page in edit mode either way - unless I'm going to leave a custom message. I also have Twinkle enabled through my .js but Twinkle is not the only script I've had issues with, I have others that create additional tabs that don't always show up and I've noticed that my xfd closing scripts don't work though other people are using them; this is particularly ironic since others are leaving an edit summary that they closed using my script but I cannot and I've tried from multiple machines. I have not tried from another browser, so I'll have to do that and see if it really is a FF5 issue.--Doug.(talk contribs) 09:56, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
You can try avoiding document.write in the following way:
// Script from User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js
importScript('User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js');

// User:Lupin/popups.js
importScript('User:Lupin/popups.js');

importScript('User:Interiot/Tool2/code.js');
importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js');
importScript('User:Smith609/toolbox.js');
importScript('User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js');
See if that works. mc10 (t/c) 18:39, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
See above fix - and is there either an advantage in doing this anyway, and/or would it be helpful if I reversed the above fix as suggested by "User:This, that and the other" and implemented this to see if it works too? Ben MacDui 17:13, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Ben MacDui was already using importScript when he had the issue, so if his problem is fixed with Twinkle as a gadget, there is no point in changing back to importScript. — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

friendlytabs.js

  Resolved

User:Ioeth/friendlytabs.js has been deleted. Can this please be restored, either to its original location or in my userspace? This is an extremely helpful little utility. When the change to the new system occurred, lots of people requested the return of this functionality, which was easily provided by importing this script. Thanks, MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 20:04, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Requests for create-protection on existing pages

It is useful to be able to request create protection on a page that is marked for speedy deletion, but not yet deleted. Can we add the option to request create protection for an existing page? VQuakr (talk) 04:37, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

diff to previous editor

When a user performs several edits in a row, but the last one is not the current version, it's handy to be able to diff that just block of edits as a group. Does Twinkle have a shortcut for this that I haven't found? I'd much rather the "next-to-last editor" shortcut on the diff page be relative to the diff I'm looking at, not the current version of the page. It would be handy if it went forward as well - I'm looking for a "diff consecutive edits by this editor" quick link. So, for example: User A makes an edit. User B makes 5 edits. User C makes an edit. If I'm viewing a diff of any one of User B's edits, I'd love to have a link that would automatically open a diff of the last of User B's edits with User A's edit. Does this exist/is this possible? Thanks! --Fru1tbat (talk) 18:57, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

There is the "since" button on diff pages: see this old bug report for a description of what it is meant to do. I personally never use it (I don't think many people use it, simply because they can't understand what it is meant to do...) and can't say whether they might help you do what you want to do. Perhaps "since" could be repurposed to make it more useful. — This, that, and the other (talk) 08:22, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
The last comments there are exactly what I feel "next-to-last editor" should do. I just tried it on an article I recently rolled back (with Twinkle), and it diffed my latest edit with itself. I would be surprised if this were the intended function. :) The fact that "next-to-last editor" appears under the revision info on the left side of a diff page indicates to me that it is meant to (or should, at least) operate relative to the diff being viewed, not the article's overall history. If it kept the right side of the diff at the same revision and moved the left side back to the last edit by a different user, that would be extremely useful (and also much more intuitive, in my opinion). If it moved the right side forward to the last edit in that block by the same user (see my example above), that would be useful as well, but at a minimum, it should move the left side back without changing the right side, not create an entirely new diff to the current version, as it currently does. --Fru1tbat (talk) 13:15, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't follow. What is "next-to-last editor"? It's not a feature that Twinkle provides. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:58, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
Really? Interesting. Oh, I just realized I added Twinkle at the same time as revisionjumper, and didn't even remember... Ok, so forget about the next-to-last thing, then, and pretend I was talking about the "since" tab at the top, as per the bug report you mentioned above... :| Wherever it is, it's a function I would use all the time if it were implemented correctly. --Fru1tbat (talk) 03:09, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Adding custom Items to Twinkle

  Resolved

Hi, In the Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences, there is a section where you can add whatever template to the twinkle menu. However this does not work for me. I wanted to add Template:POV, so i went to Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences->Tag->Edit items->I entered "POV" in the "Template name (no curly brackets)" field->saved cleared the cache & everything But nothing changed in the twinkle menu. What am I doing wrong? Thanks --Tachfin (talk) 17:17, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

I've figured it out, i wasn't looking in the tag section :D (embarrassed). Anyway thanks twinkle is awesome!--Tachfin (talk) 19:31, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
By the way, npov (which is on the Twinkle tag list) redirects to POV. And you weren't to know this, but an overhaul of the tag list is about to appear on-wiki, which includes POV under that name. — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:00, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Adding custom warnings

It would be nice if the option to create custom warnings (for user talk pages) and warning levels. I have found many cases of not having the right option when I need to warn someone (in many cases, it is not a warning but a friendly notice). Could this feature please be added? Thanks. G10 - should have separate Attack and Negative unreferenced BLP buttons

  Resolved

I recently tagged an article with G10, as it was completely unreferenced and I considered it disparaging to the subject as it detailed his conviction for spying. A user alerted me that the notice left by TW on the article creator's talk page focuses on "creating attack pages" and doesn't mention negative unreferenced BLPs. So I've just created Db-negublp-notice to be used when that side of the G10 provisions is used, rather than an attack page. Interestingly, the db-blp notice that is on the actual page doesn't mention attack pages at all, only in a link. So can we split G10 into two buttons - one for attack pages and one for negative unreferenced BLPs. (Just did a search - I asked for this last year! The-Pope (talk) 14:09, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

I have created db-negublp, and will add it to Twinkle. — This, that, and the other (talk) 03:36, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
