should the code really be:

Shouldn't it be:

"article or section"

Seeing as you can't do section tagging with Friendly, you should make it put "article" as the default parameter for the templates that use it. For example. --Closedmouth (talk) 11:03, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

More Requests :)

Thanks :) One thing I've noticed is that it doesn't always realize tags can be put into article issues. For example, I added expert, tooshort, and and nofootnotes to an article last night, and instead of doing an article issues tag, it put them all in individually. Yeah, I could probably do an expert-subject submenu...that would be pretty nice. As far as grouping into {{articleissues}} goes, Friendly only groups 4 or more supported tags, so in the example you gave above, there weren't enough tags for it to group. SchuminWeb is indeed correct about the {{trivia}} tag, MBK₀₀₄. I am planning on experimenting with section tags in the future, though, so it might be possible eventually. Slight problem with that, in my opinion. First of all, if you're thanking someone, a personal message would be a far better gesture than a canned message with "using Friendly" in the summary. Secondly, that's when I'd apply a {{Welcomeanon}} or {{Welcomeunclesam}} to their talk page and encourage them to formally join us by getting a username. New Feature Request

I've been using Friendly and it's just what I was looking for ... Now I can send welcome messages to new users very easily.

What I think would be really cool is a button somewhere in Friendly to add a template message of "Suggested Antivandal Tools" -- I've just been manually typing something like: "Hey! Thanks for your antivandal work! I thought you might be interested in these cool antivandal tools: WP:Friendly, WP:Twinkle, WP:Popups..."

I'd be wary about mentioning TWINKLE, Friendly, Popups, etc. in welcome messages, because it would be too easy for the tools to fall into the wrong hands. You want an experienced user at the controls of TWINKLE and the like, and as users gain experience, I'm certain they'll see a tagline saying "Using TW" or "Using Friendly" and go from there. Friendly Twinkle?

Yes, Friendly and Twinkle play very very well together. In fact, in certain functions, Friendly even uses Twinkle's "vanarticle" URL parameter to automatically populate fields. For instance, with welcoming functionality, if you're on the user's talk page because you reverted some vandalism of theirs using Twinkle, if you click the "welcome" tab instead of "warn", you'll see that the article input field is already populated. This is done so that instead of leaving a new user a warning message right off the bat, you can leave them a welcome message such as {{welcomevandal}} or {{welcomespam}}. Thanks for the input, guys. I've been playing with them both for a little bit and they really do work well together - much easier to clean stuff up now. One minor strange thing did happen during installation, though. Both Twinkle and Friendly mention that I have to bypass my cache (ctrl+shift+R in Firefox) for the changes to take effect. A bug in the system?

All of a sudden my Friendly script doesn't seem to be working. I was patrolling some new pages and the tab to tag the articles with maintenance tags is missing and the same for welcome messages left on user talk pages? I'd been trying to add another script User:Jayvdb/Deletion sorting tool so thought that might have affected something. I reverted my monobook page back to prior version but my tagging ability is still missing. Is there a bug in the system or is it something I've done? Sting au Buzz Me... 23:20, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Looks like it's working for me. Your monobook.js code looks fine; since Friendly and Twinkle are at the top, even errors in other scripts shouldn't cause a problem. Have you cleared your cache? So did it work yet? I'm assuming you've restarted Firefox at some point between your two comments; that's what it took yesterday to clear the stylesheet cache for my personal styles. I've got both Friendly and Twinkle included in my monobook.js, and they're working fine, including after a recent cache-bypass (about four hours ago). Yes, the "tag" tab does show up on the main page because it's in the article space. How many tabs do you have at the top of your screen when you're viewing an article. I've seen it happen before that there are so many tabs that some of them appear off of the screen. Try importing Friendly before any of your other scripts and see if it shows up before the other JavaScript tabs. If this is the case, you can use a script to rewrite the text in some of the standard Wikipedia tabs so that they take up less space. Yes that was the case before things went bad. I had so many tabs that they went off the page. All of a sudden my computer decided it was all just too hard and refused to show "tag" which was the bit of Friendly I used a lot. Anyhow, I've managed to get it working again tonight. I've been loading and reloading scripts for the last hour and I seem to get to a stage of adding extra scripts when things go pear shaped. It seems to be the persondata script that was stuffing things up (very wide tab). Not that important so I've flicked it. I can always do a cut and paste if I need to add it to a bio article. Important thing is Friendly is working now and I want to keep it that way. I also left out some other scripts I wasn't using that much. Welcomes

Can we make it clear that using Friendly in a bot-like fashion to welcome every user who creates an account is not a good idea? We could have a bot do it, but such a task is routinely rejected; see Wikipedia:Bots/Frequently denied bots and Wikipedia:PEREN#Use a bot to welcome new users. I've seen a hand full of users doing this over the past few weeks, so it's by no means an epidemic, but clarity is A Good Thing. - auburnpilot talk 03:42, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I think that one of the main reason that we don't have a bot do it is that bots cant reply to questions, where as if a user did lots, and was happy to answer any questions, then I don't see too much of a problem. If it got to a point when a user was not able to answer every question, they have done to many ;) I personally check their contribs first, just to make sure that there not a vandal, in which case I would provide some guidance. It goes beyond simply being able to answer questions. (1) Tagging somebody with {{welcome}} thanks them for their contributions, which makes no sense when somebody hasn't edited yet (2) sneaky vandals are more easily spotted in a watchlist when both their user name and talk page links are red {indicating a new user} (3} the vast majority of user names never make a single edit, and we are thus creating talk pages needlessly, and (4) it's an utter waste of time to sit and welcome editors who will never edit, for 8 hours straight {as I've seen one user do}. - auburnpilot talk 14:15, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Talkpage Problem

There appears to be a certain kind of problem that will cause the java script execution to come to a halt at this point "User talk page modification: data loaded". The problem occurs only with talk pages, and it also happens with Twinkle (e.g. when using csd, and notifying the initial contributer), Surprisingly it stops at the same point as Friendly does. The problem happened today after I used AWB to append text to several user talkpages. I am not sure this is a localized problem,a global bug or simply there is something wrong with my Firefox which I ran on XP SP2. Any help will be appreciated! Cheers! Friendly is actually based off of Twinkle and uses the same code library to run (morebits.js). Because of this, any problem with the editing and submittal of forms in the morebits.js code affects both Twinkle and Friendly. Turns out that someone made a careless change to MediaWiki:Newarticletext which corrupted the XHTML for all pages which used the message (i.e. new talk pages). I've fixed the problem, and everything appears to be working fine now! Ioeth _{(talk contribs friendly)} 15:32, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Article Issues Update

"Added Welcomevandal template to user talk page. using Friendly" edit summary

If a new user sees that message in their edit history, they'll think we are automatically calling them a vandal. I used that tag to welcome a user and notify them that some of their contribs don't conform to our standards. I didn't want to call them a vandal and the edit summary might disparage them from wanting to become a wikipedian. Can the automatic edit summary be changed on that one? Would it be acceptable to add a flag into the script that masks the welcome template you're using? If you turn it on it will simply say "Added welcome template to user talk page..."? Seems like a decent idea for a solution to me, so let me know if that works for you. I could even have it turned on by default so that if you wanted your edit summary to say exactly what template you're using you would have to turn it off. Let me know what you think! Templates now linkified in edit summaries

While I was doing some other enhancements (see above thread), I added the ability for Friendly to linkify the template names in your edit summaries. Now, instead of seeing "Added {{expand}} to article..." you'll see "Added {{expand}} to article...". Addition Request

First off - this is an invaluable tool. Second, I have a couple of suggestions for additional features for your consideration:

1. a "translate" or "not English" tag with the option via drop down to indicate the language of the article; appropriate message then posted on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English.
2. "merge" tag with ability to add page to be merged to, and placing merge suggestion on article talk page

Not working

I can't get Friendly to work at all for me. I'm running Firefox 2, and I even have Twinkle running fine. But no new tabs show up when I install Friendly. Addition Request

First off, this is a great tool. Tagging has never been easier for me, and never has it been as fast. I hope you don't mind i copied it over to my user space and edited it a little. My Newpage patrol Script has the habit of adding a Redirect=No after each page name, even if it is not a redirect. This causes Friendly to see it as a redirect page, so i just commented out that part of the code.

Second, is it possible to add the {{Peacock}} template to the tool? Every now and then i find good pages which are riddled with Peacock words. Excirial ^{(Talk,Contribs)} 12:25, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Tag tab not functional

Welcoming new users isn't working

I've been having trouble posting welcome messages to user talk pages that have no content. After I pick the welcome template I want, the window just sits forever with "User talk page modification: data loaded..." shown. This may be related to the issue that was reported a few weeks ago, here, though that was apparently fixed at the time. Anyway, I love the script and hope it will start working again for me soon! You know, I suspect it is because I started using the beta of Firefox 3. I see that only Firefox 2 is supported, so I suppose this is not technically a bug. If you would like to look into it anyway, I just found that there are two errors on the Error console after I try to welcome somebody:

Intro Too Long/Short

When you are are taging an article there are too entries in the tagging menu:

{{toolong}}: lead section of article is too long and should be shortened

{{tooshort}}: lead section of article is too short and should be expanded

The problem is that the description does not match what the template actually does. {{toolong}} and {{tooshort}} are templates for the article being to long not the intro. If the intent was the intro the templates {{intro-toolong}} and {{intro-tooshort}} need to be used. I nosily looked at your monobook file, and see you have importStylesheet('Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Add LI menu/css'); . This line nailed Friendly for me when adding delsort. The script is also not working for me. I get the tabs into right place, but when trying to tag a page, the tagging window is opened but I am unable to proceed and "send" the templates to the page - the button obviously do not work for me. Cleanup tag?

Within a very few minutes of creating Italian support for Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war, which is one of a series of subarticles off the main Iran-Iraq War article, a "cleanup" tag appeared on the article, and Friendly was cited as a tool in applying it. There was almost no time for a human to have read the article and followed any links.

Is there something in Friendly that may be automatically applying a cleanup tag? If so, it certainly would be helpful if it would give any indication, on the discussion page, what fails to meet Wikipedia standards. Bias

Non Free

Wrong tag

The {{toolong}} tag is described in the "tag" tab menu as referring to the lead section of the article. That particular tag refers to the article as a whole. Hey, cant get friendly or twinkle working. Its probably a rookie mistake, but can someone help a guy out? i put the imports into monobook, but nothing happens. Broken Again

Friendly's Tag and Shared IP functions are broken! Luckly I did a Firebug test which said that getChecked is not defined. It said that this is the line causing trouble (line 1002):

Installation problem

I have tried everything above, and still don't see any new tabs. I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.14 with js enabled. I have added the js and css code above, ticked the boxes in preferences:gadgets, shift Refresh, cleared the cache. Nothing works. Tagging with copyvio

things like the select menu under notability, future etc... is builtin as a feature in morebits.js now, which removes the need for the extra callbacks just to create the select forms. Also the getChecked is now defined in morebits for HTMLFormElement, and thus the problem that has been that it has either been undefined or that it has been overdefined is solved. Potential problem user welcome

Is there any chance of including this template Template:Firstarticle from WP:Welcoming committee/Welcome templates/Table to the list of problem user welcome templates? It's useful if a newly registered users' first act is to create a page which may need to be deleted. Welcome messages before CSD's

That sounds like a good idea. However, there has been long-standing opposition to bot-added welcome messages. I do agree with that, but I think we also need to be aware of the consensus that automated welcomes are a somewhat devalued currency (proposed welcome bots are repeatedly denied authorisation at WP:BRFA). {{Morefootnotes}} would be useful across wikipedia, and it woukd be great to have it included.

However, {{Future ship}} is a highly specialised tag, and for the vast majotrity of editors it would just be clutter. I think that it would be very useful to add {{future}}, and while I considered suggesting that more specialised tags in that family could be included in a dropdown men (as is already done with notability), I notice that Category:Temporal templates shows list over 50 future X templates. Template:POV-check

Please could Template:POV-check be added to the list of article-space tags which Friendly can apply?

I have upgraded the {{welcomeunclesam}} template to function the same as {{welcome-anon}}, in order to display an article title if a user so desires. Thus one would need to place {{subst:welcomeunclesam|art=Foobar}} on a page in order to add an article title. Could this new functionality be added to Friendly's tie-in with this template? Actually, it already does. It's listed as {{nofootnotes}} ("citations" is a redirect to the real template). Personally, I'd like to see Friendly start to carry {{morefootnotes}}, since I find myself in need of this tag quite a bit, and wish it was part of Friendly. Possible Bug

I have just noticed this one. Using Friendly on Win XP SP2, Firefox 2.0.0.14. I have edited my monobook.css to display persondata boxes where pages have them and I have also installed the User:Dr pda/persondata.js script. Now, when I am on a page that has such a box, the "show/hide persondata" tab is displayed, but the Friendly-generated "tag" tab disappears. Good place to test out welcome's various options...

Since I can't test it out over at my sandbox (cause I'm "welcoming myself"), does anyone know a good place to? Basically I want a place I can test out each of the welcome messages to familiarize myself with them. I don't want to have to basically test each option out on someone else's talk page (and possibly get warned/banned for it), unless there is a "preview" option I haven't discovered. You don't have to actually use them to find out what they say. The name of each template is at the beginning of each option. For example, the first option starts with {{welcome}}, so if you type Template:welcome in the find box, it will take you to that template. You can click on the "welcome" tab on anyone's talk page, jot down the names of the templates, and close the popup window (without choosing an option) without penalty and without anyone knowing. Missing some redirect templates

Hey, I just discovered the redirect template functionality, but there were a few missing that are listed at WP:R#What do we use redirects for? that I think ought to be added as they have different results that aren't provided by the ones currently available. Namely:

• {{R from name and country}}
• {{R from full name}}
• {{R from surname}}
• {{R from merge}}
• {{R from duplicated article}}

new tab suggestion

Hi. I think a lot of editors have a bunch of links they like to keep handy while editing pages, quicklinks to policies or MOS, external links to the reflinks tool on Toolserver, that sort of thing. Would it be possible to add a tab to Friendly that allows users to define their list of quicklinks, and pop them open in a new window/tab when selected? Consolidating existing tags if the old and new are enough to trigger the articleissues tag is a good thing. However, if you're not adding anything, I'd be inclined to leave well enough alone, as I would find an edit that just consolidated existing tags without any other changes to be somewhat annoying. The script already prevents you from adding a tag that is already there. It's not possible to "pre-load" the checkboxes with the tags that are already on the article, which is why it does this. The reason is because the script doesn't grab the edit form until after you have clicked the "Submit Query" button, so there is no way to parse the edit form's text with regexp until after that is done. do-attempt tweak?

Could the {{do-attempt}} tag be tweaked so that it will replace any {{orphan}} tag on the page when it's placed? Also, it would be great if it would automatically add the "att=" parameter as well. For example, if I were unable to de-orphan an article first marked as orphan in July 2006, then the article would originally have this tag:

After this was replaced with do-attempt in September 2008, it would look like this:

"Null" in edit summary

Project-specific welcome templates

Is it possible to provide a general javascript that WikiProject users can use to add a project-specific welcome template? There are some specific welcoming templates already available, but I'd like to have {{MedWelcome}} because I use it a lot. It looks like you substituted the script instead of importing it. All you've got to do is import the script and then copy the script like it says on the project page, then copy and paste the configuration code (also on project page) into monobook.js, then add a little extra at the bottom to get custom welcome templates. I hooked you up, though, so do a CTRL + F5 and you should be rocking and rolling! You can go in there now and add more if you like or change any of the other options. Another great feature - keep 'em coming! One question - I set up a custom welcome in my Friendly config. Now, the custom template, {{User:Ukexpat/welcome1}}, contains a signature within it, so I don't need Friendly to add a sig, but it does. Nope. Friendly has some pretty complex logic to determine whether a signature, heading, etc. needs to be added to the built-in templates, and I just don't think it's a good idea to try to extend it to custom ones. Also, it appeared to me that most of the templates in CAT:PWEL don't have signatures included. These two factors coupled with the complexity of using this new feature if I were to extend that logic made me decide against it. My recommendation is that since that template is in your personal userspace, pull the signature off of the template and let Friendly handle it if you want. Cheers! This is awesome! I've already added WP:O's welcome templates to my monobook.js. Out of curiousity, Ioeth, what does Friendly look for to determine whether a signature is NOT needed? Friendly actually has four hash tables programmed into it with an entry in each for the standard included templates that keep track of headings, signatures, article, and the art= parameter. It actually doesn't do any looking at the template itself. When you select a standard template, Friendly looks in each one of these tables as well as your configuration to determine what it needs to add and where it needs to add it. There's no programmatic reason that I can't extend this feature so that users can set up custom hash tables; I just figured it would be such a pain in the butt for users to set up that it wouldn't be wanted. New Feature Proposal - friendlytabs

So I have this script that I wrote for myself a while back called fixtabs.js. It changes some of the text in the tabs at the top of Wikipedia pages so that many of them don't take up so much room. For instance, "discussion" is replaced with "talk", "edit this page" with "edit", etc. It's especially handy, if you're running Twinkle and Friendly as the number of tabs you have up there can quickly outgrow your screen.

I was thinking about making it fully user customizable (enable/disable, custom strings, etc.) via the FriendlyConfig configuration variable and then rolling it into Friendly. If you'd like to try out what the feature will be like, add this to your monobook.js:

Add new anon welcome template

Could we add {{welcome-anon-vandalism-fighter}} to the Friendly welcome tab? It's based on {{welcome-anon}}, and it specifically thanks anonymous users who fight vandalism. I'd say we sorely needed this template, because on more occasions that I can count, I've wanted to thank anon users in a welcome form for fighting vandalism, but no template existed. Friendly not welcoming people

Friendly appears not to be welcoming people. It walks itself through all the motions and indicates that it successfully edited the page, but the edits are not "taking", as it is not showing in contributions nor registering as an edit on the targeted talk page. Add new welcome template

Incorporate FurMe into Friendly?

Has anyone given any thought to incorporating FurMe into Friendly? It is in the same script "family" as Twinkle and Friendly, and seems to be of the same concept, but for the image namespace, as it tags images like Friendly does articles, and assists in adding fair use rationales.

Welcome link on diff page disappeared

There are 25 more template in article issues than in friendly I can check the specific ones but there are some missing e.g. {{jargon}}, not one I use much but sure there are others. Well, Friendly supports a variety of commonly used templates. The list has been based on what I initially thought would be handy as well as what users have requested over time. The ability to group some of these templates into {{articleissues}} is just a handy feature; I don't use what article issues supports to drive the list of the templates that Friendly has. Minor fixes

I notice that the bot comes along and "corrects" the tags that Friendly adds. Could this be fixed on the front end rather than having the bot do it after the fact? ie - "cleanup" is corrected to "Cleanup" and "notability" is corrected to "Notability". Is Friendly compromised?

(Have also placed this question at ANI) Having just provided a welcome/warning (first edit appears to be vandalised) - I note that when I used Friendly it signed my name incorrectly and pointed to the Artichoke page - see these two diffs. Friendly tab renaming breaks Twinkle and Friendly tabs

Two things:

1) When did short tab names become the default? I have no specific tab name preference (and want to keep the long tab names), and today, all of the shortened tab names showed up.

2) When I went to install the tab naming configuration here, here, and here, each case like this broke my Twinkle tabs and my Friendly tabs along the top of the screen. Is this a bug, or did I do something wrong? The first diff is me installing it to make no tab changes (tabs now broken), the second diff is me going to the standard configuration exactly as written with default shortened names (tabs still broken), and the third diff is me getting creative to try to fix it myself (and to no effect).

And apparently I broke it again. Help? I'm trying to get the standard tab names to still come through, and somehow broke things again. I did this to go to standard names, and completely broke it.
