Refactor request

edit

I think this could be useful, but needs a slight refactor of wording to be clear on the changes needed, since it is in your userspace I didn't want to edit boldly!

My suggested list of changes that need to be made would be:

  1. Software Requests (need to be completed by developers)
    1. Create a new user group on enwiki, named OTRS members
    2. Add the read permission to the new group
Groups appear to require any permission in them in order to work - goal here is to simply have a group exist
    3. Update the sysop group permissions Add groups and Remove groups to include the new group
  2. Edit-filter requests (can be completed by admins/ef-managers on-wiki)
    1. Create an abuse filter to apply tags using the new group as a condition

@Mdann52: please look over and see what you think. — xaosflux Talk 02:57, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'd avoid scope creep at first, but it's possible the OTRS team as a whole may need other permissions in the future that could be considered. — xaosflux Talk 02:57, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: sounds good - Feel free to boldly edit this - it's a proposal draft after all! I've always thought the ability to see deleted pages "may" be of use, but I think we can suvive without it for now. --Mdann52talk to me! 06:53, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Is OTRS active for EVERY project? (To the point where this would be a global group?) — xaosflux Talk 14:10, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
It probably could be a global group because although the system is organized by languages, it could in theory be expanded to every language in the Wikipedias. It might be worth taking this RfC to meta, if it saves people having to request this group at every wiki individually. However, there may be objections about local sysops losing the ability to grant and remove the user right. Green Giant (talk) 21:04, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
While I don't disagree that it should go to meta, I personally, would like to see it implemented at en & de successfully first (like it already has been on Commons) first, to show that it would also be beneficial to other projects. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 22:26, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Green Giant: Local admins already have no say on who is a member of OTRS or not, so a global user group may help, so the issue about local sysops is moot to a degree. --Mdann52talk to me! 07:32, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was thinking of Commons admins who can add the right at Commons on request. I just thought there might be grumbles if it becomes a global group but since the actual membership is done on Meta it shouldn't be a major issue. Have to check on a technical level if the local abuse filter is even enumerating global groups, or if this will break the current goal. In any event, trying a project level sounds like a good first step. — xaosflux Talk 17:01, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Global group?

edit

Hi, I have just created a Request for Comment on Meta regarding the possibility of creating a global group for this purpose which would eliminate the need for local groups. Any comments are appreciated at m:Requests for comment/Creation of a global OTRS-permissions user group. Rjd0060 (talk) 17:46, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
