Configuration to Wiktionary
Resolved
@NicoV: How can I configure Check Wikipedia so that it works with English Wiktionary. I don't understand the instructions very well on the configuration page. Pkbwcgs (talk) 11:28, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. I'm not entirely sure, but basically you need to initialize a configuration page for English Wiktionary, but according to Labs, the configuration page should be here, which is a normal wiktionary page... If I try to create it with the content below (a basic configuration coming from enwiki, with almost all errors deactivated except #001, just to see what happens), my edit gets rejected, probably because it's not in a "Projet" namespace.
- You should ask at WCW project if they can configure correctly the page name so that it can be edited (Magioladitis, Bamyers99, Ladsgroup...). Currently, I don't know who has access to this configuration. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 13:01, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: I am pretty sure Check Wikipedia is available on Wiktionary because I have seen it on the list of Wikis it is available to. Pkbwcgs (talk) 13:41, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Pkbwcgs: Yes, it seems to be available, but if you look at Labs, the link to the configuration file for enwiktionary leads you to a non-existing page on enwiktionary, which is in the main namespace and not in a project namespace (hence not correct to create it there). So Check Wikipedia probably uses a default configuration file, not with a user-defined configuration. That's why I said the page name for enwiktionary configuration page has to be changed in CW. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: This, I believe is the translation page but I am unsure. It seems to be inactive but I could move it to WikiProject Check Wikipedia/Translation. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:09, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- I have started a discussion here to propose the move. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:15, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, but I think the proper way would be to change the link used by CW (to have the configuration page not in the main namespace). I believe it will need some cleanup also. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:22, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

- @Pkbwcgs: As see that your post to change CW configuration has been answered to. You will probably need to be update the configuration file, because it's very old I believe. I have configured WPCleaner so that it can be used on English Wiktionary with the configuration, it can be helpful to see what is configured. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 12:44, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

This is may be due to many different reasons:
<ul>
<li>templates or infoboxes being substituted rather than transcluded (e.g. external links templates). Please restore the original infobox.</li>
<li>copy-paste creations of de-facto new infobox types. Please try to correct <i>all</i> affected pages, not just the ones on the list by actually creating a proper infobox in template space and then transcluding it.</li>
<li>attempted tweaking of the text of templates - particularly commonly stub templates. Please replace with more general / worse fitting ones as they do properly categorise things, or suggest a new stub type.</li>
<li>sometimes this caused when someone tries to use templates with three curly braces "{" instead of two, e.g. {{{Reflist}}} instead of {{Reflist}}</li>

Still current?
Resolved
Is this program still current? On the installation page it says: "Some examples of installations are available: Windows XP, Java 7..." Nothing for anything younger than 15 years-old?? I figured it out quickly enough, once I relised I had never installed Java on this machine... but still... — Iadmc♫talk 07:26, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Iadmc. Yes, very current. It can still run on Windows XP, Java 7 if you need to, but I'm running it on Windows 10, Java 8 ; some people run it on Linux flavors... For example you can see that it's used a lot on frwiki, and a bit less on enwiki. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 07:51, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- I mean that there is no installation example for versions higher than XP. Any reason for this? Good program BTW. I just used it to fix a host of issues. (I'm on Win8.1 Java 8) — Iadmc♫talk 08:26, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- Iadmc I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10, so I didn't have to install WPC on Windows 10 from scratch, and no one else took the time to write an installation example from a more recent version... I plan on buying a new laptop for Christmas, so maybe I will write one , but feel free to write one if you have the time. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 08:34, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

- There is no need for an example installation for a newer version. At least not for Windows 10 on Firefox. Works absolutely the same (I have updated yesterday). The Banner talk 14:36, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Help
I am having a problem understanding the page that describes how to configure the spelling check feature. Can someone help me. Best Regards, Barbara ✐ ✉ 21:30, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Barbara. What do you want to do exactly? Is it on enwiki or an other wiki? --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 13:42, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
- My question concerns the en wikipedia and I am just starting to learn how to use the program. I want to check articles for spelling errors and I would like to install this feature but I am having trouble understanding the instructions. Thank you for your response. Best Regards, Barbara ✐ ✉ 15:51, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Barbara. For enwiki:
- Currently, WPCleaner uses Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos for its list of expressions to check (see parameter general_suggestions_typo in User:NicoV/WikiCleanerConfiguration). You can extend this list of expressions if you want, the new expressions will be automatically used by everyone using WPCleaner or AWB
- You can also create your own list if you prefer to add you own expressions with no impact for other users:
- Create a page with your own expressions either in AWB syntax like what is in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos (User:Barbara (WVS)/Typos), or in WPCleaner syntax like what is in fr:Wikipédia:WPCleaner/Suggestions which is more powerful (User:Barbara (WVS)/Suggestions)
- Create your configuration for WPCleaner to activate your own expressions (general_suggestions = User:Barbara (WVS)/Suggestions END or general_suggestions_typo = User:Barbara (WVS)/Typos END) like in fr:Utilisateur:WikiCleanerBot/WikiCleanerConfiguration.
- WPCleaner only works with a list of regular expressions, it doesn't have a full spellchecking feature with a dictionary. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 08:39, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Reference duplication
Can you please enable error 081 - reference duplication. It is currently disabled. It makes it easier to look for pages with reference duplication rather than looking everywhere. Pkbwcgs (talk) 10:52, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. What do you mean? In Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia/Translation,
error_081_bot_enwiki=true END
means that WPCleaner should check for #81 in pages (I just tested, it seems to work), even if #81 is disabled on labs (error_081_prio_enwiki=0 END
). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 16:23, 10 February 2018 (UTC)- @NicoV: It does check for error #81 but I want it to be easier to be able to check this error. Just like other errors, I would like to be able to click the error number and load the pages that contain this error just like the other errors. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:27, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- It needs to be straightforward to check this error. I shouldn't have to look in different pages whilst handling other error to look for this error. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:29, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- It is acceptable for articles to have this "error", and fixing it in bulk would be a violation of WP:CITE, which allows each article to choose its own citation system. If an article has chosen (for example) not to use any named references at all, then there is no way to remove duplicate references while respecting the established style. — Carl (CBM · talk) 16:33, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- @CBM: Is it incorrect to fix duplicate references? Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:47, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
- If the article already uses named references, then presumably duplicates can be combined. If the article does not use named references, then they should not be added automatically. AWB already has this behavior. On their own, duplicate references are not an error - it depends whether the individual article intended to have duplicate references or not. — Carl (CBM · talk) 18:39, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

- Hi Pkbwcgs. As you see from the discussion, generating the list for #81 is a decision for each wiki. For enwiki, it's been decided not to generate it, because all reference do not need to be deduplicated. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 19:08, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Please consider hosting executables on a more reliable platform
Resolved
Hi, I was looking to test out WPCleaner but I noticed that the compiled files are hosted on a weird host named site123.mutu.sivit.org. While I'm sure the program is safe, I'm still wary of clicking on anything from a weird URL like that (especially on a wiki). Could you please consider hosting these files on Github itself? Thanks.--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 13:01, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Cpt.a.haddock, as I'm using Java Web Start for WPC installation and update, I'm not sure changing the hosting is simple. Sivit is a hosting company, "mutu" means mutualized, and "123" is probably because I'm the 123rd customer on their mutualized hosting service. Many people are using WPC as it is right now, and I don't see how hosting files on a bigger hosting company will make things more reliable : WPC is signed with my code signing certificate (otherwise, Java won't let the program run). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 06:53, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- @NicoV: Thanks for your reply. Code signing is great (assuming that it's not a self-signed certificate). As for the URL, I'd be less wary of downloading https://github.com/WPCleaner/wpcleaner/releases/wpcleaner-1.4.0.jar than http://site4145.mutu.sivit.org/WikiCleaner/WikipediaCleaner.jar purely because the github URL is advertised as the project's website as well as Github being a more widely used host for such projects. While it isn't foolproof either, it lends a certain legitimacy to the URL and I won't need to double-check if it is reliable or not. FWIW, github provides a releases feature that supports binaries. I'm unsure of web start and updates support, but it should be fine for jars. Thanks again.--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 09:43, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Cpt.a.haddock: Self-signed certificates do not work anymore with Java Web Start, only trusted certificates work, so I'm paying for a trusted certificate for code signing... At the beginning, WPC wasn't on github, but on sourceforge, and I don't believe it was possible for me to do a proper Java Web Start release there, so I went for a different hosting solution for the releases (on an account I already had, as I was also managing things like Jmol's wiki). When I moved from SF to github, I didn't look for changing the way releases are available because JWS works with an URL and I didn't want to spend time figuring how to modify it transparently for users. If I find free time, maybe I will attempt to move the way releases are hosted... --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:54, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Cpt.a.haddock, see #Need help to test new installation, releases will be hosted on tools.wmflabs.org. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:55, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Need help to test new installation
Resolved
Hello everyone.
It's been roughly a year than WPCleaner updates weren't deployed (due to a problem to renew my code signing certificate, as the process to do so has become a lot more complex and expensive), and so you're still probably using this old release of WPCleaner... I've finally found the time to prepare a new installation process for WPCleaner which gets rid of the problems with the certificate . It requires a manual installation of this new version (2.0) for the first time, but after that it should be updated automatically. The 2.0 release has many additions compared to the 1.43 release which was available through Java Web Start.
The installation process is a bit basic, but I would need some testers to check that it works on various environments (I only tested on a Windows 10), et gather some feedback for enhancements to the procedure, documentation...
To install the new release, temporary documentation is available on WMFLabs. In a nutshell :
- Install Java 8 or more recent (previous release required at least Java 7)
- Download 2 files (getdown.txt and getdown.jar) in a dedicated folder (I refer to it as
[Path]
below) - Execute a command
java -jar [Path]/getdown.jar [Path]
Thansk. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:45, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Bug with bogus image option
Resolved
Hello, please see this (diff) edit on Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. thumbtime=2 was changed into thumb=time=2 however this does not appear to work with the .ogv file. I reverted to how the page was before and it seems to work fine as it is. (version 2.0beta). Redalert2fan (talk) 10:42, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Redalert2fan. I think it was only a suggestion, it wasn't automatically applied by WPCleaner. The problem was that WPCleaner didn't recognize the TimedMedia magic words as possible magic words for images. I've fixed it and released a new version. If you quit WPCleaner and run again the command, you should get the new version, and the suggestion to "fix" thumbtime should not appear anymore. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 10:59, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

- Hi Johnny Au. Strange, because version 51.0 should mean Java 7 (cf. Java class file#General layout) which should work with Java 8. Can you try executing the command java -version to check that you don't have an older Java installed that is being used? See Installed Java 7 on Mac OS X but Terminal is still using version 6. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 06:22, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Login error
Resolved
Why is WPCleaner saying "Login unsuccessful: Unknown error" when I try to login. This is not good. I am doing a one week trial for my bot's task 8 and now I have to pause because I am getting an unknown error when logging in. What is this error? Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:09, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- I managed to log on and complete day 4 of the seven-day trial from updating ISBN errors and ISSN errors. However, it took a while to load up and I needed to change my bot's password because it says the requirement is 10 characters. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:25, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Apparently, it's because new rules have been applied to Wikipedia for passwords, they now must be 10 characters long at least. The problem is that while they did that, they added a new code for error cause to the API and instead of putting the explanation in the same field as before ("details", that WPCleaner is handling and displaying it to the user), they put the explanation in another field ("reason")... I've modified earlier today WPCleaner to handle this new error code properly and the display the explanation that's in the "reason" field. So it will be easier to understand that "Unknown error", but you still have to update your password on Wikipedia... --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 22:46, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
ISBN errors not updating
Resolved
The ISBN errors are not updating on WPCleaner. It is saying it updated them but the page is not getting updated. Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:21, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: I see your bot updated the ISBN errors. However, my bot is taking care of that and the ISSN errors at the moment. An update is scheduled for my bot everyday at 21:00 for ISBN errors and ISSN errors per task 8 so I don't think your bot needs to update the ISBN errors or ISSN errors anymore. Pkbwcgs (talk) 11:29, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. I know your bot is updating daily the ISBN and ISSN error pages, but I will keep the dump analysis task as it is, it's only run twice a month and then dump analysis makes a big change in the 2 pages as some problems are only detected by WPCleaner, not by CW or the various templates. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 07:40, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Disabling fixes for other algorithms
Resolved
In WPCleaner's bot tools, I would like the fixes for other algorithms disabled when using the WPCleaner bot tools for my bot to fix specific CHECKWIKI errors that have been approved. How would I do that? Pkbwcgs (talk) 21:38, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. Normally, in the bot tools window, in the CheckWiki pane, you have 2 columns to select which errors are fixed, and which lists are used. By default, several errors are selected, but you can save and reload your own selection with the buttons below. An other option which I use is to run the bot tools by script: you can define a task file (like this one that goes through several errors to fix them using the list provided by CW or on dedicated pages, then analyze the last dump) and run WPCleaner in bot mode to run the task. For example, the first line in the task file (
FixCheckWiki 1 +1 +2 ... +542
) tells WPCleaner to go through pages listed by CW for error #1, fix error #1 and eventually fix #2, ..., #542 if a modification has been done for #1. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:52, 17 December 2018 (UTC)- @NicoV: It worked out well and it didn't do fixes for other algorithms but I need my bot to slow down because it is speeding up to 30 edits per minute or more when fixing error 88. Pkbwcgs, with this feature you can't preview the change on the article talk page, the best you can do is try it on a test page and see the result on the talk page (for pages outside the main namespace, it may be required to tell WPCleaner to create/update the warning as it will be deactivated by default). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:01, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: I will test your template on a test page once I am done with updating the usage figures for UK railway stations. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:03, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- Pkbwcgs, ok, ping me when you want to give it a try if you need some help. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:05, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- Pkbwcgs, just to mention that once this configuration is setup, it will be applied to every user of WPCleaner (ISBN warnings will be created/updated in every manual or bot edits when needed) unless you add the configuration in your own configuration page User:Pkbwcgs/WikiCleanerConfiguration (but even then, it will be applied to each of your modifications). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:44, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- This has now been forward to a RfC at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Proposal/RfC: Allow ISBN warnings on articles talk pages with ISBN errors. Pkbwcgs (talk) 11:56, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Lint errors on WPCleaner
Resolved
I saw many lint errors on WPCleaner bot tools like "Tidy bug affecting font wrapping links" and "Tidy whitespace bug". How can these be configured so that they can work? Pkbwcgs (talk) 11:28, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. What do you mean by "so that they can work" ? You can have access to the list of pages reported in Special:LintErrors sub pages through the button "Linter categories" in the main window of WPCleaner. After that, if the error is configured correctly in Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia/Translation (check for errors above #500: for example the 2 errors you mention are #535 and #536), WPCleaner should report such errors when editing a page. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 14:32, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: Why is automatic fixing not working on the lint errors? Pkbwcgs (talk) 15:31, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. Ok, I see: the list of pages are not retrieved apparently if you run it from the Bot tools window. It's a bug, I've never used it for Linter errors, as I'm using the Automatic Fixing window for such errors. I will have a look on how to fix it. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 16:26, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: The automatic fixing window for WPCleaner does not fix any of these lint errors. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:14, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Pkbwcgs. Are you sure? Because I'm using it from time to time to fix some of the Special:LintErrors/missing-end-tag errors, and it works on some pages. The problem is that in many situations I don't know how to fix such errors automatically. I just tried on frwiki for bogus-image-option on the main namespace: on the 9 pages, WPCleaner fixed 2 pages (Gare de Saint-Étienne-de-Montluc and Puits de pétrole). So, it worked for me (at least some pages were fixed). --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 17:25, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- @NicoV: It does not fix "Tidy bug affecting font wrapping links" automatically so can you please enable that. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:10, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Can you please enable WPCleaner to perform fixes like this to that lint error. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:19, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Pkbwcgs: Yes, it takes me a lot of time to test WPCleaner when I modify it to perform a fix automatically instead of manually, and we don't have much pages left for this error on frwiki. I've modified WPCleaner but I'm not releasing it publicly without testing (I don't know when I will be able to do it). If you want, you can use the test version of WPCleaner and tell me if it works: do another installation of WPCleaner in another folder, but just after downloading getdown.txt and getdown.jar and before running the first command, modify the file getdown.txt (replace
appbase = https://tools.wmflabs.org/wpcleaner/wpcleaner/
byappbase = https://tools.wmflabs.org/wpcleaner/wpcleaner-test/
). It should fix automatically such errors (for simple cases), but I'm not sure it will not modify anything else... Tell me what the results are. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 15:43, 29 December 2018 (UTC)- @NicoV: I tried installing the test version of WPCleaner but it installed the actual version rather than the test version. Pkbwcgs (talk) 22:23, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- It still won't install the test version of WPCleaner. It only installs the actual version even though I followed your steps. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:50, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
- I got the fixing on the demo version working. However, I would like to be able to save my edits. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:56, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
- I have managed to get on the test version of WPCleaner. The modifications for that lint error look good. Pkbwcgs (talk) 10:05, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
