Languages

edit

I didn't understand something about the languages part. I can create/expand articles in any language? Or does there have to be a judge who can read and understand the language? For example can I contribute articles on Hebrew Wikipedia? Pinging @Jamie Tubers: as creator of page. --SuperJew (talk) 20:19, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello SuperJew, thank you for your question. Yes, you can create articles in any language. So, please go ahead.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 20:49, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
I will do. Signing up as a participant now ;) --SuperJew (talk) 20:52, 22 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Of course it is nice to create articles in another language but you need to make that English an international language .not every body can understand Israelite and thank Thijin William Deng (talk) 01:35, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Thijin William Deng:, the longstanding purpose of having separate Wikipedia projects for different languages is to provide content to readers of those languages. A page in the Hebrew WP, for example, must meet the notability and quality standards for that WP, and the fellow editors there will review it. To make pages on the AfroCine topics more accessible, appropriate new categories (based on existing Wikidata items) may need to be created and populated in foreign language WPs. Netflix Israel presently offers Nigerian content and Hebrew WP readers will appreciate more information about actors, directors, producers, et al. -- Deborahjay (talk) 12:09, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jamie Tubers: I just created an article (Tobong’u Lore) for the competition, only to realize the competition doesn't start until October. Can I count this towards the competition anyway? Listing articles

edit

@Jamie Tubers: Is there a special sub-page to list articles, in accordance to the prize category? Or do we just list only under Wikipedia:WikiProject AfroCine/Months of African Cinema#Article achievements and you and the judges will sort it out? --SuperJew (talk) 10:50, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the suggestion, you can list articles here Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Months_of_African_Cinema/Users_By_Articles. HandsomeBoy (talk) 13:22, 3 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy: Thanks for the answer and for creating the space. I was thinking of something like was done for the WiR World Contest or for the Summer World Destubbing Challenge - listing sections for each prize and sub-headings for users and one lists their pages. --SuperJew (talk) 17:58, 3 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Improving articles

edit

Is this just an article writing contest, or an article improvement one? I thought it was both. Did the rules and scoring change? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 12:05, 3 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions Editorofthewiki. To be eligible to win prizes, I am pretty sure only newly created articles will count as entry. But for the metrics (1000 articles) of the contest, maybe expansion may be counted. pinging @Jamie Tubers: for clarification on the latter. HandsomeBoy (talk) 13:15, 3 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy and Jamie Tubers: Following up on this question: while I'm creating articles on Hebrew Wikipedia, I'm also expanding and adding references on English Wikipedia. Should I list the articles I improved? --SuperJew (talk) 12:03, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
SuperJew Please do. I have confirmed that the only place article expansion does not count is in determination of prize winners. Thank you so much for your work. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:26, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy: Could we clarify this point? Editorofthewiki removed my expansions I listed in this edit. I would like to know if to continue expanding as well as creating or if to invest my time only in new articles (for the competition obviously). --SuperJew (talk) 06:43, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
SuperJew I only removed your expansions because someone had previously removed mine and several others. If I recall correctly the rules were during the beginning that you received a half point for expansions, but it seemed to have changed in the first few days. I don't have a problem either way, I just want some consistency. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 13:39, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Editorofthewiki: Yes I would be happy for consistency too and to know where to invest my time. --SuperJew (talk) 15:21, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Many stubs exist

edit

I'm making this a new section to ensure it gets clarified, but a continuation of the above (Improving articles). Many stubs exist, so a new page can't be created for those names. See Category:African actor stubs for just one topic in the En WP. So expanding those pages is counted in the contest, each as a full page? -- Deborahjay (talk) 12:23, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for bringing this category to the talkpage. I will add it to the article suggestion page. Expansion of stubs is very much appreciated to the success of the AfroCine Project, and I would personally recommend that during AfroCine 2021, there should be rewards targeted at destubbing articles in this context. However, just to reiterate and avoidance of doubts for persons who may seem unsure, the metrics for gifting prizes for Months of African Cinema 2020 has already been laid down, and can not change. Expansion of existing stubs will be indexed in our success articles, but will play no part in deciding who wins prizes. HandsomeBoy (talk) 21:04, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Content translation tool

edit

Does translating articles from English wiki to another language using "content translation" tool considered as an use of automated, or semi-automated tool? .. or it is allowd? Fady Nash'at (talk) 11:20, 10 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Fady Nash'at: to the best of my knowledge, the AfroCine Project does not have any cast-in-stone policy or guideline that prohibits participants from using translation tools. However, as a Wikipedia editor that have been here for a while, I know English Wikipedia volunteers generally frown at automating the article creation process, especially when sources are not readily verifiable in English. But since you are interested in going the other way round (i.e from English to others), I would think that if you identify notable AfroCine topics in en WP, I don't see anything wrong in using tools to translate them to other less populated WP. Foreign director

edit

If a foreign director makes a film in Africa, does it count for the scope of the contest to create an article on the director? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 17:57, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Editorofthewiki: If the film was produced in Africa and the story is primarily related to Africa, then it definitely counts. The ancestry of the director does not really matter in determining if a film is within the scope of AfroCine, it is if you want to create a BLP for the director that we weigh that. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:03, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
My question was about a bio of the director. I was assuming that a film counted. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 22:38, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Editorofthewiki: Sorry for misreading your comment. I do not think it counts, except the director is primarily known for his works in African cinema. HandsomeBoy (talk) 23:04, 21 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

AfDs

edit

I really hope our admins and jury are taking note of articles qualified to be tagged in the AfD criteria currently left largely unattended to, even with the NOTABILITY rule being broken by a number of editors in this project. Kambai Akau (talk) 23:08, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I am, and will pass the info to the jury. Henceforth, I will also participate in the AFDs. But kindly still leave the article listed, even if it is moved to draftspace. HandsomeBoy (talk) 15:42, 22 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
HandsomeBoy - Ow, thanks. I had three of my aricles marked as AfD, they all got moved to the draftspace, but I succeeded in having one improved and returned to the mainspace. The other two, do I bring them back to the list? Because I had them removed after their movement to the draftspace. Kambai Akau (talk) 23:33, 22 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Kambai Akau Please send me the links to them. HandsomeBoy (talk) 10:49, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
HandsomeBoy: I'm sorry, I thought the pages were drafted. They were actually deleted totally, but here are their link addresses in my user folder: User:Kambai Akau/Neba Lawrence and User:Kambai Akau/The Chronicles (2020 film). Thanks!Kambai Akau (talk) 22:30, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have gone through the AFD discussions, and also done a search on the articles. Since the Cameroonian film was deleted via AFD, we compulsorily need to go through AFC. For the Corona Virus film, I also suggest using AFC to be safe. You need to move them to draftspace (Draft:The Chronicles (2020 film) and Draft:Neba Lawrence). After that we will submit for review, and I will come in the discussion. I think both films have a chance of being in mainspace, lets remember that Cameroon have a lot of their sources in French, and I could find some reviews for Toka's film. HandsomeBoy (talk) 19:23, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
HandsomeBoy : Bless you brother. I just moved the contents to the draftspace. Thanks! Kambai Akau (talk) 01:50, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Diversity

edit

As we wind down the project, I was wondering something. Both me and User:Gihan Jayaweera have created articles on every single African country, no small achievement since some African countries have essentially no film industry. I was wondering, with regards to the diversity prize if we could split it. What are everyone's thoughts? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 21:32, 28 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Editorofthewiki: It is indeed quite laudable, I remember how difficult it was during the last Women In Red contest for many editors to get to that mark. This is even more tasking since the scope is limited to just cinematic contributions. Back to your question, that will be the decision of the jury, but I don't think that particular category can be split as that was not what we submitted to the WMF when we were requesting for grant. If either of you should win, you can split it among yourselves based on your personal arrangement. May I also mention that the diversity award is not only about African countries, but it looks at a participant that create articles for the highest number of countries. HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:08, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

After 30 November

edit

Hello everybody, please I have a question about the contributions after 30 November. Is the contributions (expanding the articles that I have already created during the contest) after this date are counted ? Or only the size of the page before this date that will be counted ? Thanks again.--Mohamed Belgazem (talk) 14:51, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Mohamed Belgazem: This contest is purely an article creation contest, not a destubbaton or article expansion contest. As long as your article was in mainspace between October 1st and November 30th, it will be counted based on its status when the jury is reviewing it. So you can continue to improve your articles even after 30th, as long as it was created within the window period it is eligible.HandsomeBoy (talk) 20:13, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy: When will the judging take place? (more out of interest than anything as my 13 articles won't got far (got bogged down in uni work :( unfortunately)) Whoever is judging has quite a task ahead of them - seems while there's a very high amount of quantity submitted, from a quick random sample, there seems to be a severe lack of quality and length on a lot of them. --SuperJew (talk) 09:29, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Your contributions is well appreciated. Tentatively winners will be announced in January 2021, and everything concerning the contest is planned to be completed latest February. We want to give a bit of space for exactly the reasons you've highlighted above. HandsomeBoy (talk) 11:18, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
That means every article made after 30 November will not be eligible for the contest?? OR Can we make new articles after 30 November?? Gihan Jayaweera (talk) 22:50, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
No, it won't be counted if it was not created between October 1st and November 30th. The contest is over! HandsomeBoy (talk) 19:48, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Edits made by bots

edit

Hi!. I have a question, when the articles are evaluated, will the edits made by bots be taken into account? I wonder it because in some wikis the bots add up to 2k. So do those edits count or only human edits? Greetings — Preceding unsigned comment added by 181.179.27.57 (talk) 18:59, 5 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

For some reasons, I am just seeing this post, apologies for late reply. Once again, this contest is an article creation contest, not article expansion contest. While there is a minimum size standard, it is extremely low and a well-referenced stub article will likely have same eligibility status as a GA article as regards winning prizes. So as long as your article is notable, well-referenced, wikified, etc. it is eligible irrespective of the additions by bots. I hope that answered your question. Question

Hello Everybody, and thanks for organizing this contest again. I have a question about some articles I want to create them for the contest. Is this type of articles Blaxploitation and List of accolades received by 12 Years a Slave (film) included in this contest ? Thanks again.--Mohamed Belgazem (talk) 12:02, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Mohamed Belgazem: Please do. They are certainly needed, especially articles on similar topics like "Blaxploitation", as long as there is an AfroCentric angle to it. In the case of "List of accolades received by XXXXX", it needs to be for a really notable AfroCine film that won numerous awards. But they are certainly in scope of the contest as the contest page states: ...a contest/edit-a-thon for creating African cinema-related articles.HandsomeBoy (talk) 12:06, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Concern about gaming from New Page Patrol

edit

Hi, we have to patrol the new articles that are coming out of this project and of particular concern are those from User:Gihan Jayaweera, by far the biggest contributor to the New Page Patrol backlog. The competition rules state, No automated, semi-automated tools, scripts or manual templates to mass generate content are permitted for the contest. Any indication that editors are cheating by using a cookie-cutter template or script to mass-generate through lists may lead to disqualification. however GJ has stated at I have a source code format used in creating the article. It is a mistake of that name. Their articles are hastily created rather than focusing on notability, high quality, etc. which creates more work for other editors. Myself and other editors commenting at Wikipedia_talk:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers#caution_please are concerned that this project due to its design—both the high $$$ award and attention to number of articles created rather than quality—is incentivizing behavior that does not help the encyclopedia. Thank you for you comment buidhe, I have dropped a note on his talkpage addressing the use of pre-defined template for some parts of his articles. But I think most of his articles are fairly notable, they are coming from Africa so might not have all the multiple sources you'd want to see, but he mostly picks articles from the "Article suggestion" pages, which have some form of open independent vetting. But I certainly agree with you that he needs to find a balance between efficiency and effectiveness, rather than let one suffer.HandsomeBoy (talk) 09:58, 15 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding type of additions

edit

Is this contest also for Wikidata items? As far as I understood it is only for articles. Olugold has recently added many Wikidata items to the entries for the contest. @HandsomeBoy: as the main overseer of the contest. --SuperJew (talk) 07:53, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SuperJew: Let me start by thanking you for always assisting in the monitoring of the page. It is really appreciated. Now to your question, according to the established jury process, which has three metrics for scoring, any WikiData item created during the contest will attain a point. The remaining two metrics does not apply to WikiData entries, and some prize categories are "Wikipedia only". So essentially, WikiData contributions is also part of the contest. I need to make some clarifications if they should be listed in the achievement page, or we should have a separate list for them, I remember in 2019 we used Outreach dashboard to track them rather than listing them there. So I will get back to you on that. HandsomeBoy (talk) 08:38, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
According to listing guideline, it states: Only place entries created during the contest here. Enter the flag of the country, the article, and your username and place the article at the bottom of the list. Try to ensure that they are a minimum of 1 kb and have adequate sourcing. If you're adding an article which you created in another language: Wikipedia or Wikidata, remember to use the language prefix accordingly in your Wikilink. If you're not sure how to link from other Wikis, just list the page title you created and put the Wiki in brackets., so listing is allowed.HandsomeBoy (talk) 08:46, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy: Okay I see cool I wasn't aware of that :) Sorry I didn't contribute as much this contest... real life is super busy rn :/ --SuperJew (talk) 09:36, 26 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

A suggestion

edit

Dear organizational team,

I think a simple certificate for participants in the contest would means a lot, at least to appreciate their effort. I hope you will take this suggestion into consideration, thank you.--Amr F.Nagy (talk) 23:26, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Amr F.Nagy: Thank you for your suggestion. As regards acknowledging participants, we will definitely provide barnsters for all participants appreciating their efforts. As for certificates, so that I will understand you correctly, do you mean physical or digital certificates? HandsomeBoy (talk) 13:42, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
@HandsomeBoy: Thank you for replying, I think digital certificates are easier (for you) by sending them via emails, if a participant would like to receive it.--Amr F.Nagy (talk) 20:58, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you once again Amr F.Nagy, I have discussed with the team and they welcome the idea. I am also aware that some of the local organizers gave out certificates during their physical meetings. For this year global contest, you can send an email to info@afrocineproject.org requesting for one and we will issue out a digital certificate in your preferred name.HandsomeBoy (talk) 00:36, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Great! It was very nice of you to discuss this with the team, I'll contact the email above. Thank you so much HandsomeBoy, I appreciate it.--Amr F.Nagy (talk) 01:02, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

HandsomeBoy I'm sorry, but do you think this email (info@afrocineproject.org) is valid? I sent many messages and the gmail answer is (No Such User Here), Finally, I sent a message at the project page (afrocineproject.org) but I'm not sure if it was delivered.--Amr F.Nagy (talk) 02:00, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the heads up Amr F.Nagy, apparently this is an issue with Gmail as a sender, and we are presently working on fixing it. For the time being, please visit Jamie Tubers and send an email to him directly. Apologies for the mail filter issue.HandsomeBoy (talk) 05:03, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
