Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:53, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Category:Enoch

I would like to create category called Category:Enoch in order to re-organize the material in the Enoch series. Enoch is a very mysterious character that would still need to be de-mythologized for the sake of ancient and modern studies in religion. Is there anywhere I can propose or discuss the creation of this category ? ADM (talk) 20:33, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

There are a number of folks named Enoch; any particular one? --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:45, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
(e/c) I imagine that you could just start adding the category to relevant articles (WP:BEBOLD maybe?), but of course there is no guarantee that the category would remain if other editors disagreed. Are there other, similar categories already in existence for Biblical figures? I tried looking for some, but my already sparse religious knowledge seems to have deserted me! You could try looking through the sub-categories under Wikipedia:Categorical_index#Religion_and_belief_systems for a precedent.
For discussion, perhaps the best place to begin might be the talk page of Wikiproject Religion, or alternatively the talk page of one of the articles mentioned at Enoch (I wasn't sure which Enoch you meant), although a discussion there may not get as many contributors. --Kateshortforbob 20:52, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
The son of Jared is by far the most famous one, known simply as Enoch, there is merely a problem in the disambiguation which I would like to fix. ADM (talk) 20:53, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Anousheh Khalili

Would it be safe to categorize Anousheh Khalili as a Baha'i? She never explicitly said "I am a Baha'i", but on her website she has links to Baha'i prayers that she herself sang. Do you think I would run into any trouble if I put the "American Baha'is" category on her page? Parthian Scribe 20:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure As far as I'm concerned, that is compelling evidence to consider her a Bahá'í. My recommendation would be to include this evidence within the text of the article, though, to justify its inclusion. —Justin (koavf)TCM21:22, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, but I totally disagree. I know it's well-intentioned, but unless she has self-identified as such we must not identify her as one. Persians face notable persecution for even being accused of affiliation. It's not fair to do that to someone in a WP:BLP. MARussellPESE (talk) 22:42, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree - we need strong references. Smkolins (talk) 02:00, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
For what it's worth I took a look around and several websites mention the idea but almost all of them are unacceptable sources of info. The closest one I would consider is Anousheh’s prayer CD has been approved by the Baha’i National Review Office of United States. which seems to be a personal webpage of someone named Anousheh, which is a possible weakness, and the fact that it's on a personal page could also mean it may disappear without warning. But there is enough smoke to keep looking for a more solid reference. Smkolins (talk) 14:57, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Date error???

The Bahá'í Faith as an Abrahamic religion

While Bahá'ís believe in all the prophets mentioned in the Bible and Koran, I'm not sure if it should be categorized as an Abrahamic religion. After all, Baha'is do not see any of the prophets as superior to one another, so what's up with its categorization (on most pages) as an Abrahamic religion? It's really a "world" religion, but since there is no category for that, why isn't it considered an Modern or Iranian religion? 174.18.4.211 (talk) 12:41, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

My guess is because Bahai is specifically mentioned as an Abrahamic religion in the first paragraph of Abrahamic religions. The other points you raise don't really say anything against that. John Carter (talk) 13:21, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
The Abrahamic religions are those monotheistic faiths which recognize a spiritual tradition identified with Abraham. In this case the Baha'i Faith identifies with the figure of Abraham as both a Manifestation of God, and that Baha'u'llah's ancestry can allegedly be traced back to Abraham through Abraham's wife Keturah makes it clearly an Abrahamic religion. That it also accepts other religious traditions as containing truth and originally being from the same God does not invalidate the requirements of being an Abrahamic religion. Abrahamic religions

The article Abrahamic religions needs to be revised to include materials on the Bahai faith, such as scripture and the like--Orestek (talk) 11:42, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

This is the position several have offered. It used to be far more substantial but while fixing many defects in the article the Baha'i content was largely stripped. There was an active edit campaign going on for some time (check back in the histories to August/September/October.) The key is to find more sources that recognize the participation of the Baha'is in the world view of what Abrahamic religions are. Short of that content treating the religion on equal par is vulnerable. I'd welcome your efforts to identify concrete highly reputable sources that reference the religion in such a high profile article - think along the lines of high claims require high proof. Request for comment on Biographies of living people

Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, many wikiproject topics will be effected.

The two opposing positions which have the most support is:

  1. supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
  2. opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect

Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.

Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced BLP articles if they are not sourced, so your project may want to source these articles as soon as possible. See the next, message, which may help.

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/New articles - they have a bot to gather a list of possible project members. Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Bahá'í Faith/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Bahá'í Faith/Archive 2/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

another idea....

well perhaps two - on the talk pages of Abrahamic Religions and Bahá'í literature, not to mention scattered among the articles where the religion is mentioned, there are various sources detailed to greater or lesser degrees. So one idea is to create something of an annotated bibliography article. Another is to plumb such sources for relevant information on their various subjects articles. I was thinking of copying such references here but I'm not sure of the appropriate mechanism as talk pages generally age out and get archived sooner or later. Just a thought I had.Smkolins (talk) 10:04, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

expanding Abdu'l-Baha's journeys to the West...

Hi. Following some encouragement and interest I've been looking at expanding from `Abdu'l-Bahá#Journeys_to_the_West into a full article. It's all at User:Smkolins/Sandbox and I'm wondering a couple things. I've tried various schemes on basic structure. So far I like the present one the best. What do you think? Also should I post as is, as is with flags for expanding sections mostly towards the bottom, or keep plugging away until the content is reasonably even and then post? The main structural problem is various levels of citation - some are ?? that need to be found but mostly there are unstructured Hardvard-like entries barely formatted. Frankly Harvard style is something I've done only alittle of. If I keep going through the development alone it could easily be a couple months before it's "ready" to post. On the other hand one ref I'm waiting for and have been in communication with the Library of Congress about is a reference that might come online in June so a couple months is in order for at least one detail (I have a secondary ref but I think the direct newspaper story should prove most worthwhile.) French Wikipedia - Proposed merging for Qiblih with Qibla

Dear Friends, I need some help to explain the differences between the Bahá'ís Qiblih and the Islamic Qibla in French here and here, because my French is not good enough for that. I know, the words Qibla and Qiblih has the same meaning, but that's imho no reason to merge two different articles. Thanks in advance and best regards, -- JCIV (talk) 18:00, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Well I thought there had been a difference in Arabic spelling, but I was wrong: both articles have the same Arabic spelling, and I have to conclude that the only difference is common Islamic transliteration vs. standardized Baha'i transliteration. Ergo, I suggest they be merged. Peter Deer (talk) 04:28, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Proposed MOS for Religion

There is now a proposed general Manual of Style for Religion and other articles relating to ethoses or belief systems at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Manual of style. Any input would be welcome. Bahá'í News

I'd just like to give Kudos and draw attention to User:Clifflandis for creating the article Bahá'í News, which was listed by Article Alerts as its "most popular missing journal", i.e., the most cited journal lacking a Wikipedia article. on the subject of journals I'll mention that the dead links to Journal of the Bahá'í Community of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (generally at http://www.bahaijournal.org.uk/) should be in line to be fixed someday - I'm told that there is an intention to re-post the content online. perhaps Bahá'í literature#Periodicals should be developed.... Smkolins (talk) 13:52, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

I've cleaned up Bahá'í News a little, and I see a few things that need work:

  • What is the relationship between Bahá'í News and American Baha'i? If the latter is a successor publication, how was it first conceived, and why did it begin publishing so long (20 years!) before the former stopped? The related reference is at a registration-only link, and I'm outside of the USA so I don't think I can see it.
  • Is there a better overview somewhere of the content of Bahá'í News, besides just that most of it was about international news, pioneering and domestic developments? It'd be nice to see information about specific sections, i.e.: fund goals/progress, letters from the NSA, the Universal House of Justice, or Shoghi Effendi, etc. It'd also be interesting to note whether any major communications were first published in Bahá'í News, in the same way that many of 'Abdu'l-Bahá's tablets were first published in Star of the West.

On a related note, Bahá'í World News Service needs creating too. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 18:39, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
