WNBA draft templates
All - over the last year I have cut the WNBA draft templates (eg - Template:2010 WNBA Draft) down from three or four rounds to two rounds, which mirrors the NBA draft templates. I did this for a couple of reasons. First, WNBA rosters don't turn as much as NBA rosters (in part because there are fewer teams) so many more players who are drafted never make rosters and second, some editors were using these templates as article creating guides and many poorly-written articles for players of dubious notability were resulting (when in fact a ton of notable WNBA players don't have articles). This seems like the place to have the discussion - should we keep these to two rounds or include three/four? Rikster2 (talk) 00:27, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- My 2¢ as a sports editor, though not very active on women's basketball: Why not just the 1st round? Is anyone outside the first round as likely to be of general interest to the average reader? I'd be OK with removing it from NBA as well (though it would take a gnome to have the energy to do it) FWIW, NFL's Template:2016 NFL Draft only has first round in their's. So my short answer it, list as few rounds as possible.—Bagumba (talk) 02:57, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- First off, the WNBA is a counterpart of the NBA. This discussion could be brought up in the NBA WikiProject's WNBA task force, but I can understand bringing it up here instead of there because the task force is largely inactive. Yet, I think since the WNBA is the sister league to the NBA that the WNBA pages should mirror the NBA pages as closely as possible. The NBA draft currently is only two rounds while the WNBA draft goes three rounds. Yet, in 1968 the NBA draft went 21 rounds. There is always a heavy bias with Wikipedia articles with more current information. The more recent the article is about, the article tends to contain more information. Yet, it looks like the NBA drafts are all written well without this bias, in my opinion. It appears to me that the draft pages only contain the first two rounds and then lists players that played in the NBA selected in later rounds. The templates themselves only have the first two rounds. I have no objection to having the first two rounds based on trying to mirror how the NBA is handling draft pages and templates. I don't agree with the notability argument Rikster2 proposes. Many of them go on to have very good careers overseas. If an article is non-existent or poorly-written, it is a better idea to either write the article or improve rather than delete information. Just my opinion. —Pink Fae (talk) 16:31, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
