Project members are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to $2680 in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hey WikiProject Chile, the Developing Countries WikiContest is back for a third year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.
Thanks to everyone who answered the call for coordinators, and please welcome the new faces on the coordinator team: the 2024 Gold Belt Buckle winner Generalissima (talk · contribs); and the record-holder for most India-related submissions in 2024, Magentic Manifestations (talk · contribs)! HIV/AIDS in Chile + help with a squirrely sourcing issue
[edit]Hi! I've been working on my sandbox on making an article for HIV/AIDS in Chile, which you can see here. I wanted to reach out to the WikiProject for help in this in whatever way people could, especially in regards to a topic that is mentioned in a tertiary source and I have been unable to track down proper sourcing for.
In El peso de la sangre by Juan Luis Salinas, there's a few pages dedicated to how in December 1998, José Francisco Claro González, businessman and grandson of president Gabriel González Videla, was arrested for trafficking HIV/AIDS medication to give to HIV+ people without access to them in Chile, with him being considered a "benefactor" to the community, as he did not run a profit from this. The book goes on to say that Claro was interviewed in the magazine Qué Pasa in 2000, had most charges dropped, and that the trial had a lot of media attention. However, I cannot find ANYTHING about this online, even though I imagine it must have made its way into La Tercera and other national newspapers, but perhaps the articles haven't been digitized as it was in the turn of the millenium.
While I am aware this topic is not quite indispensable to an article about the history of HIV/AIDS in Chile, I do find this episode fascinating and I would love to include it. If anyone has access to Y2K Chilean newspapers and can find anything on the case of a big-name businessman trafficking antiretroviral drugs, I would be very happy to be notified.
