Template

For your perusal and such I have copied the Bristol template and messed around a little so it stays the same for all the current articles but it creates new categories to make improvement of the articles easier.

{{Project Derbyshire]}}

Not knowing loads about templates or even what a parser funtion is, to my untrained eye it seems to do what i want it to. What do people think? Can anyone see any errors or have any objections to making this the new template. Dommccas 17:17, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Looks great to me. Schumi555 (talk) 15:24, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
As there are no objections i'm going to go ahead and change it. If anyone see's any major problems please message me or put it here. I'm going to have a go at updating the templates for some of the articles. Dommccas 18:28, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I will have a look at adding some more "standard" params, aswell as toning down some of the colours/replacing them with images that exist for this purpose.
Thanks for this!
Bluegoblin7 18:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
PS Can someone very nice update the Portal? I would do it, but i'm afraid i'm a) Setting up my own MediaWiki-based wiki, and b) i'm doing an awful lot at 3 4 other wikis at the moment - all of which need me more than WP! Thanks, Bluegoblin7 18:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Well the new template is up and running and hopefully at full functionality. There was a problem with nesting but that seems to have sorted itself out on it's own which is great. If you want to see how to use our lovely new template see the documentation on the template page Project Derbyshire. As allways if there are any problems you notice message me.Dommccas 11:07, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Tagging goodness

Hi all. I'm in the process of tagging a few articles with the new template. I started with List of civil parishes in Derbyshire and i am slowly working my way through them. I also noted that while we have no articles unassessed for quality we do have a shedload of articles of unassessed importance. I'm working my way through it but if anyone would help that would be brill.Dommccas 16:21, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Yep I will - i've been working through it very slowly, and as you know ive done the quality importance already. Thanks, Bluegoblin7 16:58, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I'll do as many as I can, I've done a few when I have accidentally come across them. Schumi555 (talk) 17:03, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Coolio. I'll have a go and it should be done in no time. Oh and don't forget to tag the ones that need photos, infobox, a map or stats.Dommccas 18:29, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Welcome template

I have just finished a spangly new welcome template to entice people to the project.

{{subst:Derbyshire welcome}}

See docs on the templates page and also on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Derbyshire/Templates. Here it is welcoming this talk page to the project.

If you want to make it a bit prettier feel free. It is a little boring at the mo and quite like our banner.Dommccas 19:29, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

It's pretty good atm! Idea to improve it: A series of images, animated as a GIF. There are already some on here, called adverts or something?!?! I'll have a think... Bluegoblin7 19:34, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Good idea. They look a lot better than boxes in my opion anyway. For those who want it heres some more info on the adverts. Dommccas 19:41, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I can probably put some images together over the next few days, but as for animating them...i'm afraid i'm way to busy with GCSE mocks at the moment... Bluegoblin7 19:43, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Featured article and image: how do they work?

I've updated Portal:Derbyshire/Picture Archive/Suggestions to take nominations for February instead of January, deleting the nomination for January which is now featured on Portal:Derbyshire for January.

However, over at Portal:Derbyshire/Article Archive/Suggestions, we're still on nominations for January, and Portal:Derbyshire doesn't have a featured article. Is there an agreed way to settle this, when (as now) there isn't a consensus? If not, may I suggest we need a way to move things along? Xn4 12:18, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

So as i see it the system seems to be in place for it to work it just doesn't seem to be updated. I'll update it for this month with Allestree for the featured article as it has one supporter and Image:JosephWright-CollEntrance.jpg for featured picture as it is the only nomination. Dommccas 14:30, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
The slected article is updated but the picture i realise is already done. If anyone thinks it's over long feel free to trim it. Also how long is Peak District going to be our collaboration? Dommccas 15:01, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi there. A few things, one i've trimmed and formatted the article to make it more to the style of the rest, second Peak District can come down now - like i said when I voted for Allestree it's going to be next if no-one objects, 3 in future if theres a stalemate, let's take the first nominated, leaving the rest for next month, 4 can someone start the 2008 archive pages, and remove the newsletter section from the Portal? I'm really busy with GCSE mocks at the moment to do it.
Thanks,
Bluegoblin7 15:45, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Goodbye...

Hello Happy, Happy People of WikiProject Derbyshire,

I am just letting you know that I am leaving Wikipedia after various disputes over me just trying to do good. I hope this project continues to thrive, and I may drop in to say hello. Also, I WILL still get that logo i promised I do, as soon as I can.

Thanks,

Bluegoblin7 13:11, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Shame to hear you are leaving Bluegoblin, you have been a great help to this project, it wouldn't be where it is without you. Thanks! Schumi555 (talk) 14:08, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Come and "live" in Derbyshire. Your efforts are appreciated. If you have an argument then change pubs don't leave the county. You will be missed and when we are a big success we will take ALL your credit .... come, stay, and keep it .. you deserve it.Victuallers (talk) 16:05, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I do live in Derbyshire!!! Luckily the argument was in a different county! I don't know. Shall I stay, or not? I've made my goodbyes, and i've packed my bags. I will still pop in, and I still want to get that DYK(!), but I think i'll go on a Wikibreak for a month or so to let people cool down. Anyway, if you need me i'll be there!
Oh and don't worry about credit. I'll always have 1 eye on WP to jump in when we are famous!
Thanks everyone, and don't worry - you'll be the first to know when I return!
Bluegoblin7 17:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
It's a shame people have to leave because of grief. Anyway thanks for everything. Your work on getting the project going was super Dommccas 17:48, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmm... it appears that we have worked something out so I may be returning... But it all depends on various factors. But, like I said, I havent got a problem with any of you guys, so if you need me i'm here!
Thanks,

Museums in Derbyshire

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Derbyshire. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 13:56, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Derbyshire Village Pump

Doesnt this talk page need an image? I suggest this one. Please move it to the top if you agree Victuallers (talk) 15:27, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Why did no-one think of this before? Great move Victaullers - once again your doing WP:Derbys proud!
Now we just need a project image instead of the BBC's crappy flag!
Oh and of course some As/GAs/FAs! (any ideas anyone?...)
Thanks,
BG7 15:57, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
I put the picture to the top of the page; sort the sizing out if you think it should change. I'll add the January talks to an archive too. Schumi555 (talk) 16:10, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Project Page Look

Have to comment that the project page could do with being a lot lighter back ground as both greens are overpowering the text and detracting from the content, its a bit like the current trend for background graphics in some magazines covering all the page but then the text is not visible in some areas. Like the layout generally compared to some other WP:pages BulldozerD11 (talk) 18:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for raising that. I'll take a look in a bit. A lighter colour willl probably go better!

Re-assessments of Start and B articles

Hi all,

Just a note that we should all try and re-assess Start and B articles, due to the new C class, which is in the middle. I'll post further specs later!

BG7even 19:30, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Glossop

Greetings. I stumbled on the Glossop article, and was alarmed at what I found. I have looked back at the last 500 pages of it's history to see why it was in such a state and was no happier. Good editors, seemed to be reverted and their text overwritten by copyvios. The images I contributed to Commons were taken one dismal afternoon so are of no great quality but at least their copyright status is pucker. Before I joined a edit war in the making I had to be clear in my own mind what the aim should be. Milnrow has just got GA, so I took it as a template and refering to WP:UKTOWNS I have starting drafting a new version at User:ClemRutter/Glossop/New and I now invite comments. If I think some consensus has been reached, I will post it onto the mainspace article and hope that the editors who have been so destructive in the past, will also accept that this is the way forward. At that point I may need assistance! As I have never assessed an article, prefering to take BOLD photographs I would be greatful if someone who has, could give criticism and pointers and to do an assessment when it hits mainspace. ClemRutter (talk) 15:29, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

I have posted the changes to main space--so please come and have a look. ClemRutter (talk) 23:23, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
A far better article, especially in terms of style. Some great work! Schumi555 (talk) 08:49, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Halle Berry

This may interest some of you, according to Halle Berry's WP page her maternal grandmother was born in Sawley, Derbs.I've just checked and there is no mention on the Sawley WP page. There may be room here for someone to research this for the Sawley page. Dmcm2008 (talk) 20:28, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Derbyshire companies

There is a noticeable lack of companies in the Category:Companies based in Derbyshire, the few that are in there i have added to WP Derbyshire if not already tagged. Can I suggest people add the [[Category:Companies based in Derbyshire]] to any Derbyshire based companies they find articles for, as it currently looks like there is little business activity in the county. (unless they are hidden under some other category I'ved missed ;) ) thanksBulldozerD11 (talk) 00:30, 8 July 2008 (UTC) -

Hi ... I have added a couple I think. e.g. Swizzels Matlow. Do keep up the good work. If you want to get some appreciation then create a new notable reffed Derbyshire company article with 1500 plus chars in it and contact me. I can maybe help you get it on the front page. I think Derbyshire has been there about 50 times and "you can help!" :-)

List of places in Derbyshire

In this list are what I would call "things" rather than places (rivers, buildings etc). This seems to stretch the meaning of the word "places" and does not appear to be applied similarly in other lists of places. What do participants in this project think about this? Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:55, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Just a quick look at the list to me the only obvious non settlements are the reservoir's. A separate list with a link may be more appropriate. The Listing of every little hamlets with just a one line heading could be questionable as well, till they get to a size of more than a couple of paragraphs they may be better attached to the nearest larger settlement. (but then theres probably a historic discussion on that aspect some ware). The list is also faulty at the bottom with about 20 [Edit] boxes in the table. - BulldozerD11 (talk) 13:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Quite a few non-settlements have already been deleted (I thought the inclusion of Derby Arboretum as a settlement was hilarious). I went through the list some time back cross-referencing it with another list and trying to identify some of the places- hence some of the one-line hamlets. It appears the fault with the boxes will now only be resolved by the removal of the images. Ning-ning (talk) 15:49, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I've fixed the problem of the edit boxes by using a trick ultimately thought up by some editors on the Greater Manchester Project to deal with a similar issue. If it doesn't suit people, it can be reverted.  DDStretch  (talk) 16:17, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Joining WikiProject Debyshire

To Join the Project why the over complicated editing of template boxes ?

why not a simple link like on WikiProject Yorkshire See Here Or Have I missed some thing Here, Sure your missing out on members  ? - BulldozerD11 (talk) 10:54, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Just had a look myself, and even though I've done the process before I can't work it out now. Ning-ning (talk) 11:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for reply Ning-ning, sorted it now by taking the BOLD step and re done the table in WikiCode, so easier for newcomers to edit and with a plain back ground for readability. Any problems Discuss here or my talk page ---BulldozerD11 (talk) 19:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

We don't write, we don't phone ...

Just thought I'd add a comment that it appears that this project is not doing much cos we don't chat here... but its not true. There is a lot being done. Do mail any of us on the list if you want some help. You want to join? You've joined! Welcome BulldozerD11! Victuallers (talk) 12:03, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Derbyshire Categories

Have rearranged the Categories section as No obvious order (to me), with Drrbyshire + Derby at top of columns. Then put Physial Derbyshire on the left (Rivers, villages etc), and Other to the right with Government to the top, then sort Abc.--BulldozerD11 (talk) 21:08, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Derbyshire

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 20:40, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

OK 2 points

1. I'm going to "improve the portal" 2. See above.

Want to help/share/laugh? then contact Victuallers (talk) 22:39, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey Victuallers,
I'll get helping with both as soon as i can! Ive been inactive due to recent on wiki events, and also Real Life, but I hope to be back soon... anyway, we are nearly 1! :D.
Cheers,

Assessments for WikiProject Derbyshire

Have Completed assessing all the unassessed articles, so we now have 100%, following the previous efforts of other editors to clear the list (which I keept adding to). Any you feel are wrong feel free to change / discuss my logic. Assessments are from the prespective of WP Derbyshire so other projects ratings may differ, generaly ive not changed their rating.
A few Comments;

  1. some existing stub articles should probably move to 'Start' (have some or all of:- proper refs, ibox, navbox, photo structure, concise, junk free etc) Size is not important its content that matters.
  2. Some existing 'Start' articles need to go to the new C class as have most of above list.
  3. some groups of related articles need nav boxes or list of (subject group) adding or creating.
  4. photos and images lift them off the page
  5. iboxes need to stop being ruined by deletion of unused items when initaly inserted as later editors are less likely to fill in missing cats with info when available (mainly companies that Ive seen this on). (note added to companies infobox template talk page).
  6. we need to find more articles related to Derbyshire.

Thanks to user:Victuallers encuoraging me to tackle the list. - BulldozerD11 (talk) 00:29, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I think some ofthe articles could do with a navbox like the Places of Interest, Trams and Derbyshire County one.

  • Rivers - do we do a waterways one, or expand the Derbyshire county one like the Manchester one.
  • Buildings & structures - Chatsworth etc, other houses, lost houses, tunnels, bridges,
  • Famous people - Cavandishes etc, High Sherrifs, Lords, etc
  • Sporting teams - main football, Cricket, Rugby teams
  • Sports Stadiums - part of buildings & structures ? or part of teams ?

Any ideas & comments on format + content ? - BulldozerD11 (talk) 22:20, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Note on Matlock and Derby

If anyone is wondering why i changed these two places to top importance, it is because Derby is the main city and Matlock is the county town. Simply south (talk) 23:12, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah that makes sense, we didn't have many articles at all at top importance. Schumi555 (talk) 08:08, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Another note is that i just ran the assessment bot just now and so it will update the assessments and i sorted the year old logs to current, also saving size. Simply south (talk) 14:20, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Thx. (We need I think to be (a bit?) more generous in our assessments of importance, I think.) Victuallers (talk) 14:21, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Church of St Mary and All Saints?

I didn't have much look over at Talk:Church of St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, so I'll try here... I know the sign outside the church used to give the name as 'Church of St Mary and All Saints', but now, as shown on the picture I took today, it seems to have changed to Chesterfield Parish Church. Anyone able to expand on this? Thanks, Schumi555 (talk) 13:54, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Not sure. I think wikipedia likes the normal name. So for instance Halloween and not All Saints Eve. If they (the church) are trying a new name then I guess we need a redirect until it gets to be accepted. Victuallers (talk) 14:23, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Okies, I'll set one up. Schumi555 (talk) 14:29, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
