WikiProject Conservation and Collection Care Proposal

edit

I have recently submitted a new WikiProject proposal that ties-in very closely with WikiProject Digital Preservation. The proposed project is WikiProject Conservation and Collection Care which, if approved, will aim to create new articles, as well as to gather existing articles, concerning conservation and collection care at museums, libraries, historic locations, archives, and other relevant sites into a collaborative project. Technically this group could be considered a sister or parent category of WikiProject Digital Preservation, given the wider scope of the project which will include other-than-digital assets. I am therefore writing to your group to inform you of my decision to request a seperate group, as well as to inquire if a collaboration might be an option. Given the obvious close connection between the two projects, and my own inexperience with starting a WikiProject, I am open to suggestions, collaborations, and advice from a well-established group such as your own. Thank you.- AngelKelley (talk) 23:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

COMMENT RE PROPOSAL: Hi, Angel! The project you've outlined is pretty ambitious and would take a lot of people in a sustained effort to accomplish. As you've seen, the NDSA Working Group on Standards and Best Practices has begun a project to revise the Digital Preservation article, which needs a great deal of work and, inevitably, involves reviewing a large number of related articles. That will be our focus for the present. I don't think we will be able to collaborate on a larger scheme right now, and would recommend that you consider Digital Preservation a "sister project" for the present. --Davissp (talk) 15:33, 6 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your reply and I completely understand already having your hands full. As for the number of people needed to sustain the proposed project, we are already reaching out to individuals outside of the Wikipedia community in hopes of garnering additional support. Again, I appreciate your reply and if you have a moment to weigh in on the official proposal page with support or further comments for discussion it would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck with your own project's future endeavors! AngelKelley (talk) 18:45, 9 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

edit

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X is live!

edit

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

"True Binary Clock (Anthony Liekens)"

edit

Copied from Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Digital_Preservation/Userbox:

Why is a photo of someone's product used as the image for this WikiProject? It is in this the userbox, the this Project page, and the Project template, yet has nothing to do with digital preservation. Arlo James Barnes 01:09, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Arlo Barnes: Good question! Do you know of another image that fits the WikiProject that's already on Commons or which you could get on there (which implies that it's openly licensed or that the author is willing to license it so, e.g. if you email him)? --Fixuture (talk) 03:42, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I am glad you asked, @Fixuture:. Well, the image he used is a binary tree rather similar to the discs used in rotary encoders, so something from commons:Category:Encoder_discs would be a start, since it would help with the image freeness and commercial endorsement issues although not with the relevance one. For that, I will keep working on ideas, including seeing if I can verify the license of an photo I have seen of a pile'o'hard-drives in the Archive.org offices. Arlo James Barnes 04:37, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Arlo Barnes: I really would love an Internet Archive-related image as project-image. The hard part is that the image has to look well in the small size it's displayed in the templates and also be representative of the project at the same time. I would guess that while a pile'o'hard-drives in the Archive.org offices would be pretty representative it wouldn't look so good at the small size (that might be different if it's an icon / sketch of hard drives or so). I suggest involving other WikiProject participants so that we can collaboratively find (and decide on) a good image for the project. As I don't think many of them watch this page you probably should create a new talk page entry at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Digital Preservation or simply move this discussion there (simple copy/paste). --Fixuture (talk) 12:25, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Fixuture: — Done. Good point about the readability at small sizes. Arlo James Barnes 19:14, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposed Merge

edit

It is proposed this project is merged with Wikipedia:WikiProject Collections Care, the amalgamation of the two projects would benefit the scope of both projects by bringing editors with similar interests together. Digital preservation is an integral part of collection care, and likewise a digital collection may be covered by the same principles as caring for a physical collection. In the modern era, physical and digital collections are increasing integrated. Dysklyver 09:19, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

A new newsletter directory is out!

edit

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

edit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
