Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gastropods/Subpage: the history of this CopyVio event

Timeline:

  • 2008: GB is warned and questioned about CopyVio (on his talk page) by Invertzoo in February of 2008, based on one article, and suspected for many others. GB acknowledges copying from one on-line source, but does not reply to the broader enquiry on copying from the Powell New Zealand mollusk book.

  • 2009: Over a year later, on March 7th 2009 Invertzoo is finally able to access a copy of the Powell book, and determines that there is widespread copyvio based on this source.

  • March 8th, Invertzoo informs User:JoJan (an admin and founder of WikiProject Gastropods) about the CopyVio problem, and also writes to GB about it, explaining the situation and telling him to stop.

  • March 9th, GB replies to Invertzoo, admitting copying and offering to rewrite the offending sections.

  • March 10th, Invertzoo asks GB to be systematic, and to keep the gastropod project informed about where he is in the process, also reminding GB that he should give this repair work the highest possible priority.

  • March 12th, GB works on 30 articles in an attempt to clean them up, however the work he does is simply a light paraphrasing of the text, and Invertzoo tells him this is not sufficient to remove copyvio problem.

  • March 13th, Invertzoo notifies all project gastropod members about the CopyVio problem. Invertzoo calls "help me" and is answered by User:roux who suggests posting the problem at Wp:AN/I
Invertzoo reports the problem to the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/incidents. very large and widespread CopyVio problem, number 67 on the list there.

  • March 14th. GB is "blocked indefinitely" because of the fact that GB was warned about this behavior a year before and chose to ignore that warning. The block is then lifted "in order to give GB time to respond to the charges".
Moonriddengirl (talk) comes to organize our copvio clean-up attempts and bring in many more volunteers.
Articles in the Category:Molluscs of New Zealand are blanked and tagged with possible CopyVio announcement by a bot.

  • March 15th. A team of volunteers are cleaning up 1,000 plus articles on mollusks. An attempt is made to assess how many other groups of GB's articles contain CopyVio.

  • March 18th. Since the CopyVio seems to be much more widespread than previously thought, (another thousand articles and possible more) a new thread is opened at: the administrator's noticeboard.

  • March 22nd through June, on-going clean-up of Fish articles, remaining gastropod articles, and all other articles started by GB on all subjects of every kind also needed inspecting for copyvio.
