Human Trafficking article

I am a student from Rice University and I am working on the human trafficking article for my course on Poverty, Gender, & Development. I plan on reorganizing the human trafficking article, editing its contents, and adding new sections. For example, I would like to add other methodologies of measuring human trafficking globally and show the different statistics, describe a more realistic global portrait of what traffickers and victims may do or look like, discuss the economic impacts of human trafficking on a global scale, and mainly, as pertaining to globalization, to discuss globalization and other structural factors that drive and perpetuate human trafficking. Some sources that I plan on drawing from include Janie Chuang's article in the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies on human trafficking in the global economy, Mark Latonero's research on the role of social networking sites and online classifieds in facilitating human trafficking, Feminist Economics journal's articles on cross-country empirical analysis of human trafficking and its origins, and other scholarly articles that critique the current research on sex trafficking. I would love feedback on my proposed contributions and any suggestions of scholarly articles and other reputable sources that relate human trafficking to globalization so that I can incorporate them into my contribution.

Thanks for mentioning it here - a wikiproject is a really good forum for getting input from other editors who know the field. Your sources already look relatively strong at first glance - I'll add human trafficking to my watchlist and see how things develop :-) bobrayner (talk) 12:36, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the notification! Let us know if you need proofing, review, etc. Meclee (talk) 01:09, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Hey Meclee, I actually need help proofing and editing. I added some new sections to the article and rearranged different sections around so that the layout makes more sense. But those re-arranged sections have not been adequately edited/merged well, and I need a lot of help since it's quite a long article. Can you or others help me?

Thanks. Kayceeho (talk) 20:28, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

I should have some time in the next 24 hrs to take a look. If you don't hear from me by then, please post a reminder on my talk page! Meclee (talk) 03:44, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Creation of Sex Work and Migration Page

There are currently several related articles on Wikipedia that touch upon the various issues surrounding sex work performed by migrants. Articles such as migrant worker, sex worker, prostitution, human trafficking, and subsections of articles addressing migrant sex worker populations in country-specific contexts currently exist. However, none of them specifically address the growing migrant sex worker population in many regions that have spurred debates surrounding anti-human trafficking discourse, anti-immigration efforts, and the effects of globalization on female migrants. None of these articles explicitly address the connection between migration and sex work in various national contexts, and the role globalization has played on moving bodies and sexual commerce across borders. Sex work as a specific labor sector in the larger literature of migration is significant not only for its prevalence among female migrants, but for the intense reaction state governments have had and the debates that have appeared. The literature has shown that there is something about commercial sex as a form of migrant labor that has influenced and spurred larger debates on immigration, human trafficking, and gender inequality. I believe an article that summarizes not only the characteristics of migrant sex work, but also explains the context and reactions for migrant sex work would fill in many of the missing gaps and subsections on Wikipedia. My proposed article would give an in-depth introduction to how migration and sex work have intersected to become a very influential sphere of debate for states around the world. The unique characteristics of sex work and migration make it a significant topic, and sections about its place in current debates surrounding immigration and human trafficking make it a particularly contentious and timely topic.

I would love to get any feedback or thoughts on this article, including any specific case studies, sources, or subsections you'd like to see. Some of the sections I propose include: migrant demographics and backgrounds, push factors for sex work and migration, pull factors for sex work and migration (globalization, etc), migrant sex worker legal status (in regards to both migration status, human trafficking legislation and legalization/decriminalization of prostitution), state and NGO response, transnational migration, urban-to-rural migration, and case studies for European Union (specifically Spain, Netherlands, Denmark), Japan, and United Arab Emirates. Lillyyu (talk) 04:08, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the notification. This looks like a good approach. For the Case Studies, you might use that as a top-level section, then have the European Union as a sub-section under that. This way, other cases in other countries could be added if anyone is interested in doing so. Keep us apprised and let us know if you need proofing, review, etc. Meclee (talk) 01:08, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello and thank you for your helpful feedback. I have created a preliminary version of the article. I believe it still needs a lot of work so I do welcome any feedback anyone has: Migrant sex work. Lillyyu (talk) 08:21, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
It's coming along nicely. I do have a suggestion regarding the technical aspects of the referencing. Take a look at WP:Citation templates, particularly the "Using the same footnote multiple times" section. Adopting this approach will remove the extensive duplication in the references list and benefit readers. Cheers and nice work, John Shandy`talk 16:15, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks so much John Shandy`. I have gone through and restructured the citations so that they are more appropriate. Lillyyu (talk) 21:35, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Counter-hegemonic globalization

Hello, The above-referenced article is currently being edited, more or less simultaneously, by a couple of WP editors. One may be a student, doing it as a class project. That article is, in my opinion, a high-priority article for this WikiProject. As it stands, the article needs much development, and may include original research. I'd appreciate the assistance of other WP:Globalization editors in watching the article & nurturing its development. Thanks & Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 19:10, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I've added it to my watchlist. Meclee (talk) 02:34, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Another class project?

There's been so much editing on the main article for this WikiProject, Globalization, that I have not had it on my watchlist. At least some of the current and recent pattern of editing suggests to me that it may be the focus of a class editing project, with students working on different sections. It is a tough article to watch, edit and maintain, I think. Recent additions on Religion and globalization, for instance, are opinion... It might be useful for this WikiProject to have a small, formal team focusing on that article. Suggestions? Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 13:08, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for calling attention to this, the article had somehow been removed from my watchlist. I removed the Religion section from the article. I typically watch it fairly closely, as I use it in an undergrad class. I hope it is not a class project as it is a complex topic; if it is, I'd like to contact whoever the class belongs to. The watch team is a good idea. Add me to it! Meclee (talk) 17:22, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikiproject Globalization Watchlist

I have corrected the link to the toolserver for the Wikiproject Globalization watchlist, which lists recent changes to any articles under our purview. Hopefully, this will help us keep an eye out to watch for perhaps unwarranted changes in our articles. Let me know if you have questions. Meclee (talk) 23:02, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Outline of globalization

Hello! A top priority for this WikiProject is developing an Outline of globalization. In a very small step toward that, I've posted a few redlinks (under both history and society categories) at WikiProject Outlines. That WikiProject appears to have some workspaces & templates set up to assist in the construction of outlines. They may be able to assist... Collaborative project? Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 19:30, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, DASonnenfeld. That's something that certainly needs doing. Let's hope we get some interest for collaboration. I've got a full semester right now, but if nothing untoward comes up, I can probably work on this during the summer. Meclee (talk) 01:25, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

A preliminary outline has been created. Additions/corrections welcome! Meclee (talk) 20:01, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Wahoo! Well done! Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 21:32, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Major related WikiProjects have been notified of the draft Outline of globalization and have been invited to cooperatively provide input, additions, and comments. Meclee (talk) 17:28, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Have removed Outline of globalization from the "to-do" list at WikiProject Outlines and added it to the list of outlines, under "History and Events", at Portal:Outlines. Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:22, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Portal:Globalization

Great job, User:Meclee and User:Northamerica1000 on Portal:Globalization! All WP:Globalization editors are welcome and encouraged to make further contributions to developing this important set of pages for this WikiProject. Thanks & Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:41, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Summer Schedule 2013

Well, I was supposed to have spine surgery this summer but now my Dr. has taken extended summer leave... I may find another Dr. and get them up-to-speed, but maybe not. Good news is that I'm now ahead on my planned activities for WP this summer! Just finished a major re-org of the short (and shortened) article Global citizenship and am now working on overhaul and expansion of Global public good. Next I will likely tackle a re-org of Global financial system until John Shandy` has time to re-write (he has much more expertise in that area than do I) as we have a cooperative edit request on that page. I'm thinking I might get started on a Globalization Portal. I've worked on some Portal info but have not created a Portal from scratch before, so it may or may not work! Good challenge to expand my WP skills. Suggestions for Portal creation are welcome! Regards, Meclee (talk) 03:06, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Meclee, Good idea to work up a Portal:Globalization. You might check with User:Northamerica1000, who recently did a great job putting together Portal:Forestry. Good luck w/ your other stuff! Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 14:47, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you! The Portal has been created now, but not categorized etc. as it is still in construction. It's those "selected" rotational items that I need to learn about. I only placed three main ones: people, articles, and pictures. Take a look and let me know what you think. Meclee (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

User:Northamerica1000 was very helpful! Portal:Globalization is now mostly complete. I have 1 question and 1 request.

  • Question: What does everyone think about having the Things you can do box on the Portal? My thought is that experienced editors will go to the Project page if they are interested in helping and would prefer not having that box on the Portal.
  • Request: I will be adding to the "Selected" boxes inventory as I can, but could use help. To help add articles, biographies, and pictures, click on the appropriate "More selected X" link then click to edit the first empty numbered link. A template guides you to enter the appropriate information for that box. Thanks for any help! Meclee (talk) 11:39, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Re your question: I believe the to-do list is a standard feature on Portals. Can be helpful in inviting further contributions to improving Wikipedia's coverage of globalization topics. Can do a brief survey of other Portals to confirm... Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:47, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Global financial system

I've done a re-org of the article with some clean-up and have added it to AFI: ==Global financial system at Articles for Improvement.==

Dear members of the WikiProjectGlobalization WikiProject. This notification is sent from the Articles for Improvement team to let you know that the article Global financial system, which has been tagged as part of the project, has been selected to receive community improvement.

Users and members of the project that are willing to help, may do so in the article's entry on the Articles for Improvement page.

Regards. Meclee (talk) 16:54, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
I have quite an extensive number of books and journal articles I will use as I go through and improve this article. But, I'm curious to know if anyone has a subscription to any IMF publications? The IMF has yet to follow in the footsteps of the World Bank's open data initiative... I may just end up buying a couple reports if I can figure out how to actually make purchases on their wonky bookstore website. The following reports/books have caught my attention as likely relevant and potable sources for this article:
John Shandy`talk 16:58, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
I don't have an IMF subscription, but I've been thinking about getting the Global Financial Stability Report, April 2013. You can get a Kindle edition for less than $20: http://www.amazon.com/Global-Financial-Stability-Report-ebook/dp/B00D09UMWE/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1372316637&sr=1-1&keywords=Global+Financial+Stability+Report Regards, Meclee (talk) 07:08, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
I suggest that before you buy anything from them that you contact the person listed on their free subscriptions page here. They might give you a free subscription and I think it would also be good for you to communicate with an appropriate representative of their organization about any questions about posting copyrighted information from their materials. I would be very careful about copyright and getting everything in writing from an authorized representative if I was in your place. --Pine 07:12, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Well, we can use any of their published information so long as we properly cite to avoid plagiarism. If what you mean is that we shouldn't share their reports among ourselves without buying the requisite number of copies, then of course, but that wasn't the intent of my query. I may ask them if any fees can be waived or reduced in service of helping Wikipedia improve a rather important article. But if not, I may benefit from purchasing some or all of these reports anyway since they appear to have good value for other international finance articles I work on. John Shandy`talk 11:36, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Although a few people visited the article and made minor changes, there was little response and no discussion at the WP:Articles for Improvement listing, so it has now been closed. FYI: I am now working on the Global commons article. Regards, Meclee (talk) 13:48, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Proposed mergers

I have proposed that Mundialization and World citizen both be merged into Global citizenship. Each article covers related subject matter. Discussion is at Talk:Global citizenship. Meclee (talk) 23:13, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

I've also proposed that Global digital divide (which has many erroneous statements) be merged into Digital divide with discussion at Talk:Digital divide. The divide can be seen at local levels as well as global, so the merge could be the other way 'round. Thoughts? Meclee (talk) 19:46, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Global workforce

The above-referenced article is of such poor quality, I wonder if it would be best to delete it and start all over again. An important topic... Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 20:15, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't think it needs to be deleted. I've marked it for major re-write and expansion. There are many poor quality articles in this project. I'll try to get to this one at least up to "start" quality. Meclee (talk) 16:04, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Done Article is up to start quality. Further contributions welcome. Regards, Meclee (talk) 19:38, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Food security revisions

I am planning on expanding and reorganizing the article on food security, which currently has a "B article" rating in WikiProject Globalization. This article certainly needs a wider viewpoint, since it currently centered too strongly on the U.S. I plan to replace the current definition with one from the World Food Summit in 1996:

"Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life." FAO. November 13, 1996. World Food Summit Plan of Action. Rome. http://www.fao.org/wfs/index_en.htm

I will also be adding sections on "Availability", "Access", "Stability", and "Utilization", which appear in the literature as the pillars of food security. If anyone has an interest in the effects of globalization on food security, I would appreciate the help. I would love to see this article receive a "Good article" rating. Thanks! Human Trafficking in Southeast Asia article

I plan on creating a new article on human trafficking in Southeast Asia. I am creating this article as part of an assignment for a class at my university. I feel that creating an article on human trafficking in the region of Southeast Asia is important to the Wikipedia community and beyond because it is an important matter that should be discussed. I also believe that the region has a lot of useful articles written about it on the subject and would be useful when creating a new article.

I plan on creating an article with sections on "History", "Sex trafficking", "Human trafficking", "Child trafficking", and "Laws and Regulations". If anyone has any interest in the subject or region please feel free to help out. Also any criticism on this new article is also welcomed. Thanks. Welcome! Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! We will follow your project with interest. Let us know specifically how we can help. Regards, Meclee (talk) 14:10, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Welcome to wikipedia! I'm not going to comment on the actual topic just yet - let's start with some more general points.
  • It may be helpful for you or your professor to check in with Wikipedia:Education program, especially if there are several of you (perhaps your professor has set similar assignments to others). There are some common problems with wikipedia editing assignments, and the Education program has seen it all before.
  • If you haven't written an article before, please be cautious. It can often be better to update/expand existing articles on related topics. Alternatively, if you really have to create a new one, you can start a draft somewhere (perhaps in your sandbox), then go live when all the main pieces are in place. Either of these two approaches reduces the risk that all your hard work gets deleted, which isn't much fun for you, and doesn't benefit wikipedia either.
  • If in doubt, the answer is usually "sources". Your chosen topic can be very controversial, and picking high-quality sources (and reflecting their tone rather than cherrypicking) is the best path towards neutral content. If somebody proposes deleting an article, it's usually for notability reasons, and good sources show notability. If you get into a dispute with another editor, sources are a great way to end the argument. One of the most common problems with content written on assignments is original research; you can avoid that by sticking more closely to the sources.
  • I'll watch your talkpage. A watchlist is a good way to keep track of recent changes to pages that you're interested in. You might want to add this page to your watchlist. If you create a new article, it will be automatically added to your watchlist.
I wish you better luck than your namesake! bobrayner (talk) 14:16, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

I've requested that the Popular Pages toolserver ([1]} add WP: Globalization to its list of projects. This will help us prioritize article expansion and clean-up. Regards, Meclee (talk) 21:34, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

The old Popular pages listed above went defunct about the time I posted this earlier request. There is now a new Popular Pages toolserver at (https://tools.wmflabs.org/popularpages/config.php?) and I have submitted a request to add the Globalization project. Meclee (talk) 15:42, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

External watchlist broken?

I was glad to see this project has an External watchlist -- but it seems to be broken?

Should work now! Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 01:02, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
@DASonnenfeld: Thank you very much for the speedy fix. I found another broken link atWikipedia:WikiProject_Globalization/Assessment#Statistics. XOttawahitech (talk) 05:53, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome. The latter link does appear to be non-functional at this time, not just for this WikiProject, but for other uses as well. Placed a 'dead link' note there. If anyone else has insights on & can fix this, that would be helpful. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:40, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
That second tool seems to be gone forever. I've removed the link. Meclee (talk) 15:44, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Globalization to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Globalization/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 23:23, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks to Mr.Z-man! I've added this page to the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Globalization/Article_tools page. Meclee (talk) 14:16, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

CfD discussion for societies and cultures

There is a discussion going on right now at WP:Categories for discussion that involves changing the category names for all cultures, from, for example, "Afghan society" to "Society of Afghanistan". I can see that next will be changing "German culture" to "Culture of Germany" and the like. This would be for all ethnicities, nationalities and cultures.
If you would like to weigh in, the conversation is occurring at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 March 27#Society by country. ><font face="Rage Italic" size="4" color="#800080"Liz Read! Talk! 15:09, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Global financial system nearing readiness

I'm not quite ready to nominate Global financial system for Good Article review, but I'm very close. I would like to get some initial feedback if possible. There will always be room for improvement on that article and it is definitely an article I will continue to monitor far into the future, but I am essentially done with my revamp of it.

Please note the depth of the improvement:

I am particularly interested in thoughts and suggestions regarding the lead. John Shandy`talk 23:08, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

I think you've done an excellent job, John Shandy`. I'll proof your newest additions in the next week or so and leave notes on the talk page if needed. I'll be glad to opn the GA review when you are ready unless you want another Project to do the review. Thanks for all your work on this! Regards, Meclee (talk) 23:16, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Meclee. Regarding the GA review, I think we might be better served by the scrutiny of a fresher set of eyes. The way I've mapped all this out in my head is that once any major concerns by the project have been addressed, I'll nominate the article for GA review, then once the article satisfies GA status I will seek further input from the project and also solicit the project for WP:Peer review, and finally, I will nominate the article for FA review. Once that happens, we will certainly celebrate with the finest beer and the cheapest scotch, and then proceed with its candidacy for article of the day for the Wikipedia main page. Leaflet For Wikiproject Globalization At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Adikhajuria (talk) 16:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

This seems a good idea. I won't be attending, but could fill-in the form. Anyone think it is a bad idea to have such a leaflet available? Meclee (talk) 22:57, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

I think it's a great idea and I actually will be attending this year. If you need any help/suggestions Meclee, let me know. John Shandy`talk 00:28, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Looks good so far, but I do have a few suggestions. I think we need something shorter and perhaps "catchier" in the short description (judging from the example leaflet design shown for WikiProject Medicine). Here's just one proposal for the short description: Imagine a future when every single person has free access to the sum of all knowledge on the vast changes taking place across the globe. Globalization weaves through every aspect of our lives with unmatched timeliness and relevance. Everyone in the world has a stake.

Proposed project logo.
Also, I took a stab at creating a Wikimedia-themed logo for our project after having seen a few other project logos. It's not intended to replace the one used on the article boxes necessarily, but might serve us well for Wikimania and for our project and talk pages. It's a vector graphic and should print well. What are your thoughts?
I do think we can probably condense the long description's formatting a bit and merge the current short description into it. Here's a stab (tried to keep in mind that this will be printed, so I removed links and focused on the Portal which can get readers to the other areas such as the outline, etc.):
WikiProject Globalization was created in June 2012 by a diverse group of editors interested in the many dimensions and effects of globalization. The project currently cultivates 263 articles, covering topics related to economic globalization, global business organization, the global workforce, sociocultural globalization, the global natural environment, and much more. The project's scope literally spans the entire globe.
Because globalization reaches into every realm of our lives, new and experienced Wikipedians alike are sure to find project articles or entire topic areas that fit their interests. There are more than a few areas in which we need further expertise: anthropology, business, climate science, earth science, economics, epidemiology, global public health, history, international trade, international finance, international relations, sociology, and world sports.
Experienced translators, copy editors, and grammarians are always welcome. We also regularly have calls for graphics and illustrations for project articles. Be sure to visit Portal:Globalization today!
Thoughts? I guess they haven't formally dictated what the character length of the long description is. We can always condense further if needed. John Shandy`talk 20:06, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
I like the leaflet logo. We have up to 200 words of space: 50 in the short and 150 in the long description. So, we can squeeze a bit more in there. I'm not fond of the first sentence in the short description - seems too much like a description of Wikipedia itself. Otherwise, good wordsmithing! Meclee (talk) 02:39, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

submission   Done

Thanks to John Shandy for the new Logo! I have changed the logo on all the project's templates except for the little Portal link box, for which I cannot find the template. Perhaps @DASonnenfeld can locate it (I think you created it). Meclee (talk) 23:16, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Please see the WP:GLBZ template page. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 00:11, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
@DASonnenfeld - The tag for inserting the Portal link template is there, but there is no link for editing the Portal link template.... Meclee (talk) 00:18, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
I believe you must change the image at Module:Portal/images/g, which if you scroll down you should see that the Globalization portal link is referencing File:Gps tracking.jpg. John Shandy`talk 01:07, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the info @John Shandy`, I was able to make an edit request for someone with permission to change the template.Meclee (talk) 17:14, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Temporary Project watchlist

You may have noticed that when the old Toolserver was shutdown 7/1 to make way for the new WMLabs, a lot of former tools disappeared, including the old Wikiproject Watchlist tool formerly maintained by user Dispenser. Thanks to Paul_012 (talk), we now have a temporary replacement until such time as Dispenser or another user develops a similar tool for the new lab. I've update our watchlist links, but here's a link if you need it: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?namespace=0&tagfilter=&target=Wikipedia%3AWikiProject+Globalization%2FWatchlist&title=Special%3ARecentChangesLinked Regards, Meclee (talk) 18:40, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Absence at Wikimania 2014

Unfortunately, frustrating aircraft failures and prolonged airline delays today have insurmountably disrupted my travel plans, and so I have had to cancel my travel arrangements to the U.K., so I will not be present at Wikimania 2014. I am extremely disappointed, as I'd been looking forward to this for a long time after having to cancel plans for Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong last year as well. At any rate, we will have a great leaflet distributed at the conference and I hope it will spur more interest in this WikiProject. So let's be ready to welcome and assist newcomers. Cheers, John Shandy`talk 03:58, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

So disappointed for you, John Shandy`. Hope the rest of your remaining summer goes well.Meclee (talk) 16:46, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Launch of WikiProject Wikidata for research

Hi, this is to let you know that we've launched WikiProject Wikidata for research in order to stimulate a closer interaction between Wikidata and research, both on a technical and a community level. As a first activity, we are drafting a research proposal on the matter (cf. blog post). Your thoughts on and contributions to that would be most welcome! Thanks, -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:15, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Hard Choices, new article about book on climate change in Canada

I've created a new article about the book on climate change in Canada, titled, Hard Choices: Climate Change in Canada.

Help with suggesting additional secondary sources would be appreciated at the article's talk page, at Talk:Hard Choices (Coward book).

Thank you,

Nomination of List of films featuring whitewashed roles for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of films featuring whitewashed roles is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of films featuring whitewashed roles until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:26, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Changes to Globalization categories

A user who is not a member of the Globalization project has been making changes to the category structure of Category:Globalization. I have been trying unsuccessfully to communicate to Marcocapelle (talk) that, because of the inherent inter- and multi-disciplinary nature of the topic, there is a lot of intersection with categories of related WikiProjects. Currently, comments would be welcome on a proposed re-name of Category:Sociocultural globalization (a major aspect of and 2nd tier level of the Globalization category) at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2016_May_28#Category:Sociocultural_globalization. Thank you in advance. Regards, Meclee (talk) 14:54, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

A recap of a question by Marcocapelle (talk) on the linked page "* So, to summarize, in this list of five, I'm missing the demographic aspect, while I think Business and Workforce should be part of Economic, just like Category:Business economics and Category:Labor economics are part of Category:Economics."
Demographics are included under the Sociocultural aspect of Globalization. As per the Globalization article, economics has to do solely with the interdependence of national economies; Business has to do with corporate businesses (management) and international trade regulations; labor/workforce has to do with the employment regulations, conditions, and social status of those employed in multinational, international, and other export-related businesses and related precarious employment. To understand these differences, I refer you to the Globalization article. If you wish to re-organize and re-write that article as well as re-organize the categories, I suggest those are separate proposals that should be posted in the appropriate areas. I should mention that this may also entail re-writing and or re-organization of other important articles related to Globalization. Regards, Meclee (talk) 16:09, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

I am gutting the globalization article

Figured this declaration may draw some attention :) See Talk:Globalization: bottom line, the article has acumulated a lot of irrelevant content - multidue of sections that are off topic, in essence being formatted like "Globalization is connected to Foo-concept. Now, let's forget globalization and summarize the Foo-concept in question... " Some of them do not even mention the word globalization at all! There may be some salvagable content in some of them, but frankly, I feel that TNTing them and restoring a more pure version of the article is the way to go. I invite interested editors to discuss things in the article's talk page at Talk:Globalization#Structure:_economy.2C_politics_and_culture and subsequent sections. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:58, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Globalization/Archive 2 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:00, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Globalization/Archive 2/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Globalization.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Globalization, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:40, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Portal:Anti-consumerism for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether Portal:Anti-consumerism is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The page will be discussed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Anti-consumerism until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Wikidata in multi-language lists

Hello,

At Talk:List_of_active_coal-fired_power_stations_in_Turkey#Keeping_this_list_in_step_with_other_articles_and_lists I propose that if a list exists in a non-English Wikipedia the corresponding English list should be allowed to use Wikidata for its tables.

Your comments there would be welcome.

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Globalization/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 23:01, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
