Please leave suggestions on how to improve the Ice Hockey Categorization below:
By Position
editI have started categorizing players by position. I have always thought it was a shame that one could not just look up all the current goaltenders for instance. The format I'm developing is:
- Category:NHL goaltenders (current)
- Category:NHL goaltenders (former)
The other categories could be forwards and defensemen. A player who switches could be listed in both.
Current goaltenders is accurate for all players with pages through this season. Any other players (perhaps minor league players who had short stints in previous years) that anyone knows of should be added.
Former Goaltenders only has Hextall right now because I just wanted an example up.
The only issue I can think of is the size of the forwards/defensemen pages. There are few goalies so my format works well for the goalies. Maybe each category could be like Category:NHL forwards F (current) and Peter Forsberg would go there. I have not started on the forwards/defensemen categories yet.
This category is different from just listing players because it does it not only by position but by current/former, so this would not just be a redundant list of the NHL players lists.

Alumni
editI noticed Earl Andrew was deleted the categories for major junior league categories (OHL alumni, WHL alumni, and QMJHL alumni). If WikiProject Ice Hockey people think that it is reduntant to add players to that category because their individual teams they are alumni of are already listed, than that's okay and I'll stop doing that. But I need to know what other users think. Croat Canuck 02:35, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- If the player is on a list for a team in those leagues, it disrupts category tree structure to put them in both places. IE no one would put a player under NHL players as well as Philadelphia Flyers players. If the team category does not exist, make a new cat or put the article under the main category. I'm assuming team cats exist to lessen the number of players on those leagues' category main pages. My 2 cents.

Subcategorization of National Ice Hockey Players
editAny comments on subdividing Category:Canadian ice hockey players into the following?
Categories involving player nationalities
editFor example: If the player in question is Dany Heatley (a German-born Canadian), should he have BOTH Category:Canadian ice hockey players and Category:German ice hockey players on his article, or only one? (Personally, I think including both makes the most sense.)
The reason I'm asking is there are tons of players whose nationalities/allegiances are different from their birth countries. (I wrote a little essay a while ago and there's a list of the players in this situation here.) -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 23:26, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Both of course, it's not our job to "choose" one or the other for them!! Had been said, if they specifically renounce one, then we shouldn't go against that. Kevlar67 02:01, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Stanley Cup champions by Year and Team
editRight now, various editors are in the process of adding categories like Category:1967 Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Championship Team to articles. I'm not sure this is wise. But if we are going to have it, then we should make it a sub-category of Category:Stanley Cup champions, and once a player is added to the more specific cat, they should be removed from the more general cat, even if they won more than one cup. Some players are going to end up being in multiples categories of this type (e.g. 6 for Mark Messier), and their names are quite long and ugly. To solve that problem I recomend cats like Category:5-time Stanley Cup champions, etc. on the model of Category:Multiple Olympic gold medalists. Any other suggestions to deal with this?
