Initial Request

edit

Hello. I have a big request for you, guys. {{Infobox City Poland}} needs much attention and improving. It is probably the most ugly and not-handy city infobox on Wikipedia. Maybe 52 Pickup can help, he has made already wonderful job with German Location infobox. My personal idea is that the Polish one should be just like its German counterpart which is elegant, handy etc. Standarizing styles is a good way, I suppose. I am not much into programming and the like so I can't do that, I fear I would break some patterns or something like that. Thank you very much. :) - Darwinek 14:49, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Groundwork Decisions

edit

So how are we going to go about this? I guess we have a few options

  • Attempt to improve the existing box, probably by removing features
  • Create a new box (perhaps incorpirating one or two others)

Looking at the current design, option 2 looks like the way to go - just as long as the same variables are used, to make it easier to upgrade everything. For looking at designs, it might be handy to look at how this is done on other wikis:

There are a lot of variables involved, but it is probably best to accommodate for all variables, and leave it to those responsible for Polish articles to decide which ones can go. - 52 Pickup 11:30, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

This project needs a leader --TheJosh 21:24, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

From the three ones listed above, probably only FR wiki one looks good. I would propose creating handy one similar to the German Location one. I don't know about technical issues, if it is possible to alter existing ugly one to become handy. Generally speaking, fields are quite OK but the design is monumental and awful. - Darwinek 17:22, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The latitude and longitude fields (as they currently are) are a very bad idea. The mixture of numbers and non-numbers screws up any chance of using {{Location map}} or other co-ordinates. Not sure how to fix this here. This infobox is currently used on over 300 entries, so a clean-up of some sort will be needed there. As for all of the other variables, reducing the font size will go a long way in cleaning up the appearance (as was the case in Infobox German Location). Some variables should not really be in the infobox but in the body text (twin cities, for example), but that's just me. - 52 Pickup 17:56, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree, too much variables there. With AWB it should maybe be easier to make some changes then. - Darwinek 18:17, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ditch AWB, we have a bot at our disposal, User:TheJoshBot wa ha ha ha ha! the power!

Page Reorganisation

edit

I have moved the discussion on the front page to this talk page. The project page is better suited for the template itself (for future testing purposes). Also, I have placed the current infobox on the project page (and filled it with dummy values) to give us an idea of what we have as a starting point. - 52 Pickup 17:56, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Instead of designing a new infobox from scratch, why not use {{Infobox City}}? Unlike the German infobox, there has been no demand to import data from the Polish wiki, so Infobox City is quite suitable. Here is what the infobox for Warsaw could look using Infobox City.

Infobox City does not yet have a field for car number plates, but I'm sure that can be arranged. - 52 Pickup 15:26, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Standardisation: Good & easy. We can even use the bot to convert them. Also, who needs the licence plate field? --TheJosh 23:18, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Seems a possible and good way to go. License plate is obsolete and should not be used. - Darwinek 23:31, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
For many European countries, the licence plate code is location dependant (See European vehicle registration plates and Polish car number plates#District indicators), so it is a valid thing to have. For example, German number plates starting with "M" come from Munich, while Spanish ones starting with "M" are from Madrid. The field will be added to Infobox City.
Instead of converting all Infobox City Poland articles to Infobox City, we can also make a Polish infobox which is a shell of Infobox City. - 52 Pickup 08:17, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wouldn't it be quite obsolete? You know, to have two nearly the same infoboxes? - Darwinek 10:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's true. After I just put up such a version on the project page, it became clear to me just how redundant that was. - 52 Pickup 10:38, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Personally I would propose reaching some consensus in this case. It seems only three of us are involved in this discussion. I noticed Polish Wikipedians' notice board about this some time ago. It seems they are leaving decision to us. - Darwinek 10:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC) I support addition of car plates variable to current widely used Infobox City and converting all articles to this one. - Darwinek 10:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm in favour of conversion to Infobox City as well. It makes management a lot easier. One problem is that a number of fields used in this template are not present in Infobox City, but we might be able to work something out (if we actually want to keep all of these extra fields - transportation, etc). Another problem is that the numerical fields will need to be re-edited for all entries: removing commas, spacing and extra text. That will be messy work. - 52 Pickup 10:38, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think transport field should be omitted, too. Imagine such field filled up in a infobox concerning major American city. Information about transport should go to the main article text. - Darwinek 10:47, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Although I do have a slight bias, I too would be in favor of converting to Infobox City and adding the car plates to infobox city as an option would be ok. As for Darwinek's last comment: I don't think U.S. car plates have a numerical designation in the plate to show what city that it is from. Some states' plates have the issuing county on them underneath the number, but nothing like what 52 is talking about above. It would be one of those fields that would just not be filled in for an American city. —MJCdetroit 21:33, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm definitely in favor of converting to the Infobox City template, and I agree that adding the car plates is an acceptable option. I think it's better to include the parameter now and then just not use it in the future, as opposed to deleting it. --CapitalR 04:03, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I switch over Warsaw to Infobox City to see how it is liked. —MJCdetroit 04:06, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Much appreciated. - Darwinek 07:10, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Project Completed July 2007

edit

Since Infobox City Poland is up for TfD after being converted by user User:Hiuppo to Infobox Settlement (aka Infobox City), I think we can call this complete. —MJCdetroit 17:41, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
