WikiProject banner image

The image in the banner is too small to be intelligible. Here are some suggestions for other images we could use:

Quality ratings

As they are now, the quality ratings are really inconsistent with the WP:1.0 scale, which is the de facto standard across Wikipedia. (I do enjoy the thought of a "Delete-Class" though...) --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 07:30, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Userbox?

Hey, I found out about this WikiProject because of the newsletter, and joined because I'm a proud Long Islander. I was just wondering if someone could create a userbox for members of the project, with an appropriate category as well. ~EdGl 01:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).--Pharos (talk) 19:47, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Long Island

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Belle Monde Estate?

Where is, or was the Belle Monde Estate? Some 1915 movie listed on IMDb claims it's a Long Island location. It sounds like something from the Gold Coast to me. ----DanTD (talk) 11:37, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:52, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Help Needed to protect new articles on Oyster Bay

Hello, I am the author of numerous articles on historic buildings in Oyster Bay. These are part of the Oyster Bay History Walk. One of these has been tagged AFD and there are only a few days left before this review closes. I'd encourage my fellow editors on WikiProject Long Island to weigh in at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fleet's Hall and urge the reviewer to "Keep" this page and others like it in the Oyster Bay History Walk. These are not perfect, but at least they are a starting point for us to begin to tell the story of Oyster Bay and Long Island through our buildings.

Thank you,

CDPs and hamlets

Most people, especially those in hamlets, identify where they live by their postal address and their school board. CDPs are useful for demographic information, but their boundaries are in no way constant and few people know or care which CDP they live in. People may know where they go to vote, but I doubt they know the boundaries of their CDP. The maps used for hamlets would be more useful if there were some way to overlay the post office and school district boundaries as well - or if all 3 maps were presented in the article. I do not have a source for these boundaries other than google-earth. Anyone have any idea of the appropriate place to bring this up for consideration beyond this project?--JimWae (talk) 00:09, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Huntington (which could refer to the CDP, Hamlet, and/or Township) has not recieved a Quality or importance rating. Keep in mind that there is One Article for the township, and one that is for the CDP and Hamlet. --RayqayzaDialgaWeird2210    13:12, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
The website for suffolk county has decent zip code maps and school board maps (see [1]), but I understand that NY State produced materials are not automatically in the public domain like US Govt prepared material is. It would be great addition to have ZIP maps on hamlet/village pages, and for school district pages to have district maps, and its definitely information people would like to see. Is the only way to do this to recreate the maps ourselves? This could be done, but would be time consuming. --Neighborhoodpalmreader (talk) 22:35, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh you mean change Template:WikiProject Long Island Banner to include class=category, class=template, etc.? I don't know how to do that :( ~EdGl (talk) 21:42, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
That's exactly what I mean. I think I did that with some banners for Florida-realted roads, but I don't remember how I did that. ----DanTD (talk) 19:13, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
We need to find an editor who knows how do do it. As an aside, I've been going through Category:Long Island and its subcategories, putting the WPLI banner on the talk pages of each category and article. Seems like barely any LI-related page had the banner before I started this up. Anyone who's part of this WikiProject that's reading this: there's a lot more to go and help would be appreciated :) ~EdGl (talk) 19:56, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

(unindent) I visit here to mention that i was trying to add WikiProject Long Island to a few articles, found that {{WikiProject Long Island}} did not work. I fixed it for now by making that a redirect to Template:WikiProject Long Island banner. Actually i think you should move the template from the longer name to the shorter name, though either should now work. More usual practice in other wikiprojects is to have banner at "WikiProject Name" type format, so easier to remember/use this syntax here if you follow it. Hope this helps. Bye! doncram (talk) 00:42, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

P.s. Also you may want to create more redirects, so spelling variations like Banner vs. banner and WikiProject vs. Wikiproject won't matter. doncram (talk) 00:44, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
I set up some of those other redirects. What about shortcuts to these pages? (unindent) Shortcut wp:LI is taken for another purpose. How about wp:LONGI and wp:longi for the wikiproject page, wt:longi and wt:LONGI for this talk page? If those are acceptable, create redirects from those, and add {{shortcut|wp:longi|wp:LONGI}} to the main page and add {{shortcut|wt:longi|wt:LONGI}} near the top of this Talk page. doncram (talk) 01:20, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, we already have WP:LINY and WP:WPLI, but WP:LONGI sounds good too, I think I'll create it now in fact. I don't think we need any shortcuts to this talk page. ~EdGl 01:58, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
I noticed that there are some categories which need creating. Please see Template:WikiProject Long Island Banner/class. And, are you sure you want Needed-class? This one is hardly used by any project. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:09, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
It would've been nice to keep Needed-class on reserve, just in case it's actually needed. In the meantime, there are other articles and images and what not that I've tagged already, but more have to come. ----DanTD (talk) 15:41, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Shingle style architecture

Hey, i wonder if members here could point out examples of Shingle Style architecture on Long Island. The current article (just split out of a Queen Anne Style architecture article) is perhaps overly Massachusetts-oriented. I myself just began a stub article about Montauk Association Historic District. Any instances having articles can be given Category:Shingle Style architecture, which will probably be subdivided by state when it grows. There are lots of LI examples, though, right? --doncram (talk) 18:15, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

editing campaign for all NRHP places

(meaning for all NRHP places on Long Island)

There's a steady but sure editing campaign going on, towards creating at least a stub article for every NRHP place listed in New York State. The new stubs have basic info and include some discussion of significance from the available-on-line NRHP nomination documents. I think more than half of the counties in the state have been completed. (See Talk:List of RHPs in NY for status; List of RHPs in Madison is one recently completed.)

About Nassau and Suffolk counties, I wonder about starting at the eastern tip, with National Register of Historic Places listings in East Hampton (town), New York, and working back, or then just skipping to a new area. Or would anyone prefer starting with a different town list-article? Perhaps someone has pics ready to be added. It would be more interesting to work in areas where someone has pics.

I'll pause for any response, otherwise maybe do some editing in the East Hampton list, trying to add a short description in the list-article with each new separate stub article created. It would be great if any other editors wanted to help develop the new stubs to be created. --doncram (talk) 21:00, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

great amount of progress has been made, mostly by fellow editor User:Pubdog, on town lists indexed at National Register of Historic Places listings in Suffolk County, New York. For example, articles for all 30 or so in National Register of Historic Places listings in East Hampton (town), New York have been created, each with pic (already previously available at the list-article) and also now with NRHP document links and some text development. Any other help further developing these, or adding descriptions to the list-articles, would be most appreciated! Abandoned Airports on Long Island, New York

Long ago, I've considered a list of abandoned airports on Long Island:

  • Brindley Field(Commack)
  • Coram Airport
  • Deer Park Airport
  • Fitzmaurice Field(Massapequa Park)
  • Flowerfield Airstrip(St. James/Stony Brook)
  • Flushing Airport
  • Grumman Bethpage Airport(now Nassau County Police Heliport).
  • Hough Field(Selden).
  • Rockaway Airport.
  • Smithtown Aviation Country Club(Hauppauge).
  • Zahn's Airport(North Amityville).

Now, I've changed my mind about the list, but a lot of the airports could use some articles, or some mention in other articles. Flushing Airport clearly isn't one of them. ----DanTD (talk) 20:18, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Interesting info, Dan. The 1967 topo map excerpt of Selden I have shows "Hough Field" but I guess I never noticed it! I can't find enough for a separate article (really am not finding much at all except one reference in a 1988 Newsday article, "Approved a 13-lot subdivison on 14.9 acres in Brookhaven that, with town approval, would eliminate Hough Field, an unused private landing strip on the west side of Bicycle Path, Selden"), but I will try to work into the Selden article if possible.--Neighborhoodpalmreader (talk) 20:47, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Via google news archives, it hit some pay archive somewhere, but google displayed that sentence in its search results. The difficulty of accessing Newsday archives, and the fact that they only seem to go back to 1985 when i have via library access, is sad.--Neighborhoodpalmreader (talk) 05:52, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Long Island articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Long Island articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Long Island

I was reading our article on Neil Cavuto. I learned he was born in Westbury, New York. I didn't know where Westbury was, so I went to our article on Westbury. It's on Long Island. I was shocked to find that LONG ISLAND is mentioned only twice in the article: once in the link to the Long Island Rail Road and once in a footnote. In the old days, Westbury would have been referred to as Westbury, Long Island, or Westbury, Long Island, New York. My question is: was there a conscious decision made or a policy written to exclude "Long Island" as much as possible? I would say the name is an important part of locating the town of Westbury, for example, more quickly. --Kenatipo speak! 16:37, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Wyandanch

Since there appears to be a lull in new contributions at this article, is there any chance someone here would be interested in improving the massively out of control article that is Wyandanch, New York (and/or the spinoff History of Wyandanch)? I've looked at it, but in general I really don't have a good idea of how to trim the article and still retain any encyclopedic bits that are in it. VernoWhitney (talk) 18:49, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to my/our attention. I am too busy to work on it right now, but I'll add it to this project's to-do list. I won't be able to get around to working on it until about a month from now. ~EdGl 00:46, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
That article is still a nightmare. I swiped a lot of the info related to the Long Island Rail Road and added it to Wyandanch (LIRR station), with some obvious adjustments. At least I was able to do that. ----DanTD (talk) 04:36, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Unidentified interchange

Highway complex

I like the photo; any idea where this is? Jim.henderson (talk) 13:33, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

This is a picture of the Grand Central Parkway, looking approximately west, at the interchange where the Interboro Parkway (currently the Jackie Robinson Parkway) begins in Queens.
The bridge under construction in the foreground (bottom) is the Main Street bridge today. In the background, the street that runs across the picture is Queens Blvd. and the Interboro Parkway underpass can be seen. The diagonal bridge in center of picture is the current eastbound lanes of Union Turnpike. Union Turnpike is also the road at the right that turns left and curves over the continuation of the Grand Central Parkway. The two houses near the eastern (foreground) end of the diagonal Union Turnpike bridge still exist today and have the same roof lines as shown in this picture. Searching a visual atlas for the Kew Motor Inn, Kew Gardens, NY, will easily locate those houses and the start of this interchange, which today also contains the Van Wyck Expressway overpasses. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Videodog (talkcontribs) 04:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Splendid! Bing slant view totally confirms. Ignorant of history, I was thrown off by later structures. Kew Gardens Interchange now has it, and it has a better description. For a moment I puzzled over a road overpass nearer than Queens Blvd, but finally realized it carried tracks the IND subway yard of which only the south tip is show. Thank you kindly! Jim.henderson (talk) 20:07, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Image

I'm not a member of this project (perhaps I should join, but that's a separate discussion), but I was wondering why the main image for this WikiProject is the Falkner Island Lighthouse, a point in Connecticut, when there is such a fine image available of Long Island's own iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse, or equally iconic Fire Island Lighthouse, or any other iconic Long Island landmarks. Why use an image of a Connecticut landmark? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 03:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

File:Falkner-Island-Lighthouse.png#Summary has the answer. Also we're already using the Montauk lighthouse in the project banner czar  05:34, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
That summary page says that one picture of the Montauk Lighthouse was no eligible, but clearly the one I linked to is eligible. I just think it's ridiculous (and insulting) to use a Connecticut landmark on the Long Island project page. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:42, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree. That summary page was also written in 2007, so things have changed since then. Feel free to be bold and replace it yourself czar  14:45, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Recently, a user has been adding Historic American Building Survey images onto galleries all over the commons, and has added them to generic and incorrect categories. Unfortunately, this person has added some images of a plantation in Long Island, Virginia rather than Long Island, New York. I've posted a message to the editor about this error, but I urge everyone with a commons account to go to the Long Island commons category, and move those images to the National Register of Historic Places in Campbell County, Virginia category. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 13:48, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Suggestions for article inclusion

I'm thinking this project might like to include Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States) since they are related to Long Island. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 22:45, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Since there has been no objections expressed, I went ahead and added the banners. Of course, if participants in this project object, you can remove them. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 12:40, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Long Island to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Long Island/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 03:43, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Please comment or read this Move Review

Hi there,

I'm attempting to let this project's members know of Wikipedia:Move review/Log/2016 June, where a Move Review is taking place. A Requested Move was implemented, moving New York to New York (state), which is now being contested. This should be of relevant interest to this WikiProject. This notice was requested by several editors, and is performed as a courtesy.

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Long Island/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Long Island.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Long Island, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:15, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

A short article archived from Newsday that mentions Long Island filming locations. Sadly however, it's not a complete list. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 19:24, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

I've created the new article List of tallest buildings on Long Island. I'd appreciate people taking a look and adding any missing items, data, or photos. Thanks! Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 04:48, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
