Getting started

I've been a little busy with some pressing projects of late, but I think I'm about ready to get things started on my end. To facilitate discussion, I figure a good place to start is probably by creating some kind of workflow outline for the project, and then discuss the challenges/issues being faced at any particular stage in the project. Best not to get bogged down discussing final naming conventions before a color scheme is settled on, for example.

As far as a "workflow", I see the project progressing essentially in the following steps :

1. Run the script that mass produces the base maps for every US county.
2. Base maps are manually edited to add inset maps (and other potential manual tasks).
3. Finished county maps are again processed by a script to generate individual place maps.
4. Place articles are updated to use the new maps (optional?)

If anyone can think of a change to these steps, let's get that sorted out; I'll go ahead and begin by addressing where we are with step 1 and what needs to be done in order for this step to be finalized. Shereth 14:59, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Upgrade orthographic map for locating United States

This is a call for technical assistance upgrading an orthographic map in an .svg format File:USA orthographic.svg. (The example map found at [1] shows File:United States (orthographic projection).svg which is unsatisfactory because it does not show any insular US territory, including the state of Hawaii.)

A discussion at Talk:United States#which map should we use? has led to the conclusion that the map in use from Wikicommons, [2] should be upgraded to include Puerto Rico using color #C6DEBD, representing “Other areas part of the same political unity”.

The change is sourced at U.S. State Department, Common Core Document to U.N. Committee on Human Rights, December 30, 2011, Item 22, 27, and agreed to in a Request for Mediation and supported by a Request for Comment consensus on the Talk page with inputs from Politics, government and law. Geography. and the United States wiki communities. The article introductory sentence has been edited to read, "The United States of America (USA), ... is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions." The map does not depict all insular territories, but Puerto Rico alone comprises 90% of their population, so it is useful in locating the United States territory in the Caribbean Sea, which the present version does not.
