Anyway, the reason I'm writing is that there is a huge problem with the articles on Chinese martial arts. There are several articles that it would be nice to be able to merge. Unfortunately things have grown up willy-nilly and a logjam has developed. Before anyone could remove even two logs and send them down the river, someone else would jam them back in, metaphorically speaking of course.
The main problem is that there is an umbrella concept, or maybe I should say a tent concept, wu3 shu4, which means "martial arts." It's been around a long time as a term under which to subsume weapons systems, non-weapons systems, etc., etc. Unfortunately, in mainland China somebody decided to call a fancified version derived from Chinese opera presentations "wu shu." So there is a development of very little importance to actual self defense getting confused with the whole class of martial arts.
It will take quite a lot of work and cooperation to outline the components in this rather large field, so I would like to start a project on "Wǔ Yì" (the "senior" dictionary synonym for wu shu), take my book in Chinese on the whole field as a model and an authority, and start straightening things out. How do I get started?
Thanks, P0M 18:07, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
- A project on the concept of martial arts, or just on the Chinese term wu shu? Uncle Ed 23:01, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
A project to organize the whole set of articles, or, actually, a set of articles as they should be instead of just the way they've grown up. It probably would make sense to refer to Japanese and Korean arts too. (I think of this like the Race article, where they have short sections on everything but refer readers to more comprehensive articles if they exist.)

Hi, there seems to be a similar thing going (well, perhaps going is too strong a description) at Wikipedia:WikiProject Martial Arts. Is this intended to be the same or a different project? --Fire Star 17:59, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
- I think I replied already on your talk page, but for the benefit of other people...
- I didn't know about that project. I had a look at it after seeing Fire Star's message, and it seems to be dealing with other kinds of issues. It looks useful, but so different that it would probably be better to keep it separate. Thanks for pulling my sleeve, and thanks for joining this project. P0M 05:17, 10 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
This looks very interesting. Currently my life is a bit busy so I don't have time to help organizing this project. However, I just wrote a new merging proposal at Talk:Wushu, feel free to check it out and criticize it if you like. I hope this project can assist in this mess, though I also think the name might be a bit consfusing. I'll check it out more in detail when I have time. - Wintran 20:36, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. I must admit that my knowledge and experience with Wikipedia projects are very limited. However, as the project appears now I think a more suitable name would be Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chinese_martial_arts. I understand your point that this project can be of interest for other martial arts articles as well, but as Chinese martial arts is currently its main focus, maybe it's alright to call it that for now? - Wintran 17:42, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I decided that CMA would be too narrow. Since MA is too broad I've compromised on Asian martial arts. I think we could call it just about anything except that the old title was different from the other project only in that it did not capitalize the second two words. P0M 20:04, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
- Sounds good! I've joined the project now as well. - Wintran 02:23, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I've linked to here from the "Similar Projects" section of that project... they are a little further along organizationally - would it be worth joining them as a "Asian MA" task force? This would avoid us having to have a separate banner for talk pages, and might help us to do more... -- Medains 11:24, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
It might be worthwhile in organizing some of the Japanese arts into "koryu" and "new arts". Basically a "koryu" is a confirmed ancient art, and there are officials in Japan that check the authenticity and age of arts. This is a rather arbitrary breakdown, but it seems to be important whether an art is a "koryu" or not. --Medains 10:44, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
It should also be noted that many Japanese "arts" are actually schools that teach a combination of arts. The controversial "Ninjutsu" would be an example, consisting of at least 5 arts. --Medains 10:44, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
- I agree with both your observations. Because of the complexity of these matters, I think it will be important to use "Categories" to organize our information in non-geographical ways. Separating qin na and aikido as though they are distantly related but separate arts would be deceptive.
- Welcome to the project. P0M 16:25, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
As per WP:MOS - Japanese-related articles, macrons are now allowed in article titles. I believe it is about time that we begin to place macrons everywhere they are appropriate. I have done some of this work myself, and have placed similar notices on other WikiProjects pages in order to recruit some help. I invite and encourage all of you to help in this grand scale project. As it pertains to martial arts, all mentions of "-ryu", in content, wikilinks, and article titles needs to be changed to "-ryū"; there are a number of other places that macrons belong as well. Thank you for your help. LordAmeth 18:07, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
- There appears to be a bot going round articles and fixing Macrons within them - Bluebot - maybe it's worth contacting the owner and asking for a report on articles that were updated in this fashion? These would be a good first candidate list for moving the articles to macron-ised titles. -- Medains 08:29, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Both this project and the more general Martial Arts project seem to have ground to a relative halt in recent months - what can we do to revitalise them? -- Medains 08:31, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
- I think the suggestion to join with Wikipedia:WikiProject Martial Arts would be productive for now. Shawnc 16:26, 26 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Does anybody know how to make a metal, telescopic, fully funcuntionable, 6-foot bo staff? If you do I would love to know how to make one! If possible also make it so the extension line thingys are barely visible.

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:25, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I'm trying to reduce the number of inactive wikiprojects and have proposed a merge proposal of this project to WikiProject Martial Arts. This merge would be beneficial as the WikiProject Martial Arts is well-organized and has a lot of manpower and are capable of taking in articles previously covered by this project. Please see the merge proposal here --Melanochromis 06:34, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
- As there is no objection and WP:WPMA agrees to host this page as its archived subpage, I'm processing the merge. Further discussion should be made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Martial Arts.
