primate resource?!

The box says "an attempt at creating a standardized, informative, comprehensive and easy-to-use primate resource" -- I think we should delete "primate", unless someone has radically reworked mammalian taxonomy. Steropodon and Kollikodon taxonomy

Could someone look at these articles? They are at minimum poorly written from verifiability standpoint - I personally cannot comprehend how from piece of a jaw and a set of teeth one can derive the breeding method. Type of food - yes, ok but for me milk and laying of eggs goes way too far as a conclusion. Obviously I am not a paleontologist myself but (AFAIK) Wikipedia should be understandable to ordinary people :-O -- Goldie (tell me) 20:00, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the problem is. Clearly enough of the jaw fragment is present for both of these taxa so that the jaw and teeth can clearly be assigned as a platypus-like monotreme due to extreme similarities (synapomorphies) with Obdurodon and Ornithorhynchus. As such, the most logical conclusion is that these animals were both egg-laying and milk producing. --Aranae 22:33, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I still am not convinced completely, as tasmanian wolf and the common wolf for example have a lot in common despite belonging to different taxa. However what you provided is much better than no reasoning at all, there was no information how big the jaw is and what it looked like :-) If it is not your personal conclusion (against WP:NOR) it only needs to go in the article with a proper reference (to a scientist drawing the conclusion). -- Goldie (tell me) 08:28, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Monotreme eggs information required

I have these last weeks requested in the talk pages of the following articles, Egg (biology) and monotremes, more information about monotreme eggs and images of them. I believe that there isn't very much information about this. I would like to know futher about the characteristics of these eggs, the phisiological differences between monotreme eggs and other eggs, like reptiles, birds or amphibius. I have heard that they are "rubbery" (?). Do they need to be kept warm (?) I would appretiate any information... --Francisco Valverde 19:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Animals project proposal

I think it's both a pity and somewhat illogical that we have no animal WikiProject despite the fact that there are over 20 projects that are basically its daughters. There are also other projects that could emerge from it in the future, such as one on animal behavior. The project would provide a central place for people from all animal projects to talk, a central set of guidelines for articles on animals and zoology, and an assessment system for articles related to animals. Names based on Old-World mammals

Are we for or against names that are based on pretty old Euro-centric classifications, ones that basically call marsupial species "marsupial-"insert superficially similar European animal here". Such as "marsupial mouse", "rat-kangaroo", "marsupial squirrel" (I've read in regards to phascogales, quoll etc. --ZayZayEM 02:24, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm checking, and I don't see it there. I am going to try and reduce usage of such nomenclature. As far as I am aware, terminology like native polecat (quoll), and marsupial mouse/rat (which can refer to over 50 species of Dasyurids, in several genuses) is archaic and not used by reliable literature except in an archaic sense. Even my 1940s texts mention that they aren't exactly the best to use.--ZayZayEM 13:52, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Photo requests

I note that this project's template doesn't handle |needs-photo=yes requests. The mammal one does, but it seems pointless to include that template as well just to get the desired effect. The question is whether this project should have its own photo requests category, or whether such requests should just go in Category:Mammal articles needing photos? The names link to the AFD accepted taxon, which links to the AFD taxonomy. Since taxonomy potentially changes, these ids are not stable (which is why I gave you the ids for the names).

Inconsistency between articles

Hi, in the lead section of Pademelon, it says, "Pademelons, wallabies, and kangaroos are very alike in body structure, and the names just refer to the three different size groups. Originally wallabies were divided into small and large wallabies, but a more suitable name was needed to differentiate between them." By contrast, Wallaby#Overview states, "Very small forest-dwelling wallabies are known as 'pademelons' (genus Thylogale) and 'dorcopsises' (genera Dorcopsis and Dorcopsulus)."

So, are pademelons properly considered wallabies or not? Can someone who is knowledgeable make these articles consistent with one another?

The name Pandemelon and Wallaby are generic and are applied not matter on the taxonomic affinity. So you are better off referring to the taxonomic name instead of common generic names. Enlil Ninlil (talk) 06:56, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I think "pademelon" is applied exclusively to Thylogale—I've certainly never seen it used for anything else. "Wallaby" is certainly imprecise. Ucucha (talk) 07:13, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
