FYI, issues involving citizenship of athletes

Wikipedia administrator User:Zagalejo has decided on his own to label apparently all Puerto Rican basketball players as "Americans/Puerto Ricans". This is not the standard used in all of the other athletes that I have seen, from athletics to boxing the nationality iserely listed as Puerto Rican. This can become a hot theme once it catches on, on electionary year its unlit TNT. Since you guys are the overseers of these articles, it may be a good idea to e-mail everyone in this project to weight on the issue, because I'm sure that he will revert me, being a admin he clearly outweights my opinion, but not that of all Puerto Ricans in Wikipedia. Seems that the issue at hand is properly solved already. That said, and this is my political view only, no Puerto Rican who says to be proud of being, should want to be called anything else. /Antonio Spiral-head Martin Dimelo!!! 10:36, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree with Zagalejo's last comment in that discussion. Until the political status is resolved, this will keep coming back to haunt us. A few years ago there was a debate regarding the use of the Puerto Rican flag in the infobox of a Spanish-American War article. Someone insisted that Puerto Rico should have the flag of Spain next to it, because the flag of Puerto Rico was ilegal and the autonomy granted a year earlier was subjected to the sovereignty  of the Spanish Crown. That edit war came to a sudden halt when all flags were removed. The same should be done in this case and a hidden message should be added to explain why there is a blank. Baseball infoboxes never had a "nationality" parameter, yet there has never been a debate over the matter in any of our baseball articles about players that had been born in Puerto Rico. If the lead states that "Arroyo plays for the Puerto Rico national team", any user reading it will instantly know what country Carlos Arroyo represents. When the articles belong to second or third generation players, a note should be added to the prose explaining why they represent Puerto Rico despite being born in another place, like in Travis Pastrana's page. I always believed that the political dilemas should be strictly limited to the Puerto Rico and Political status of Puerto Rico articles, there is no reason to have a GA such as JJ Barea's demoted for a edit war related to political BS. AFAIK, there is no current "standard", but the blank should be adopted as a WP:PUR guideline as a goodfaith gesture towards all political ideologies. We already did this once by choosing the neutral blue for the flag, we can do it again, albeit on a larger scale. - Caribbean~H.Q. 02:05, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
