I know I'll end up editing these pages, so I've marked myself in. I hope you don't think I'm messing up your structure, but I prefer the weay I'm writing them (England and Wales so far). Grinner 10:25, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- It all looks good, infact i think i saw that and changed the structure of the Aussie one to suit. I've added A LOT of information to the Aussie one. It'd be great to get some similar information on the English page. My information comes from governing statistics web sites. Maybe theres something similar in the UK? I'm having a hard time finding similar stuff in NZ. Or rather, i have found it, but if a sport is not as popular as others, it doesnt get a mention. POds 01:04, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Haven't done much league stuff recently but can probably do more now. Count me in for your project. One thing I've found is that league tends to get marginalised as people tend to use 'rugby' as a synonym for 'rugby union' or ignore league altogether and write articles on rugby that don't refer to league at all. GordyB 16:03, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hey thanks. I'm having a bit of fun trying to find out about the history of a lot of nations atm. Currently I'm focussing on Russia. I've got two conflicting sources atm. Trying to get it sorted out. Emailed info@russian-website.com, one day down, still waiting. Plenty of time yet before I write the email addy off. POds 01:09, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- There is a lot of politics in developing league nations with rival 'governing bodies' being set up and spending their lives feuding with each other. The conflicting sources are probably due to this.GordyB 09:06, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've pretty much got the conflict sorted out. I'm now working on getting a more complete picture of RL history in russia. This single effort should propel wikipedia to the number one english resource on russian rugby league. At least thats what I hope :). POds 06:47, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
- btw - I've noticed that trend of league being marginalised. I'd be great to fix all these too. POds 11:29, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
- Since there is now a Rugby League team from France playing in Super League from 2006 (again!), should there be (or is there already?) a page on French Rugby League? I know that Salford went to France in the 60's to promote Rugby League, and the game seemed well received, but I don't know any more. DAAdshead 16:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Theres plenty of information on France in Wikipedia. There are articles covering the premiership competition as well as the lord derby cup, not to mention frances national team and an article about 'rugby league in france'. POds 03:29, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Too few players' pages have pictures. An idea I had about fixing this for the more noteable (and picture-worthy) players and coaches would be to use their book-covers. Most famous players and coaches have written books which feature a photo of themselves on the cover. Jpeg files of these covers would be easily found on the internet and I think they woudln't create any copyright problems. What do people think?
- LOL... You think using book cover images eliminates copyright problems??? NO WAY! If anything, it *creates* them...
- Most images of players that can be found on the internet are able to qualify under fair use. But don't go searching for book covers, you'll only bring grief where there previously was none.
Sorry but I suspect its not the case that most pictures of players found on the internet qualify as fair use on Wikipedia. There has been a real clampdown on this over the last few months Jbuzza 23:07, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- My point still stands, that (in my experience) you'll find there's a LOT more trouble with using images from books... Gonzerelli 00:08, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- Not denying that in general but on Wikipedia I understand book cover art can be used to illustrate articles discussing such book. Jbuzza 12:18, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Expansion of Scope
I think that maybe we're limiting ourselves a bit here. Maybe we should go for a Rugby Football, wikiproject instead? As there has been a lot of confusion over similar naming conventions between rugby league and rugby union and there's also some fixing up or reordering possibly required at touch_football. So, I propose we form a coalition to present a consistent nature across all rugby football related articles.
- I would tend to disagree; I have no interest in rugby union, and don't want to write about things I'm not intereseted in. Grinner 09:53, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- I don't have a big interest in RU either, but we do share our history with it. So people researching rugby league history, shall undoubtedly be looking into what RU is and its history. Thus if we are wanting to make the rugby league information more... structured and easy to find, we also have a responsibility to make sure that all the rugby related pages are consistent. If the project was to go that way, not everyone involved would have to be editing the RU pages. The main idea behind this is just to get a set of people to agree on some rules or guidelines for rugby related pages. Thus those who know rugby league can enforce the guidelines on the league pages and those who know union can do the same on the union pages. Also, when I say enforce, I was looking for a much gentler word. POds 02:03, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- OK i'll forget about this until there is a Rugby union project. Then the two projects may wish to standardise their practices (article structures, categories sturctures etc) to provide a more consistint wiki experience. I hope this is eventually the case. Come to think of it, its probably a better way to go about it! POds 13:39, 4 September 2005 (UTC)
Papua New Guinea
There is at present no article on Rugby league in Papua New Guinea despite it being much more deserving of an article than say Argentina. I take it that this omission is accidental? When I get chance I'll create the barebones of an article but to be honest I know virtually nothing about Papuan RL.GordyB 09:09, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
- Yer it was, but it is known. I figured someone would create it soon enough :). This issue was raised a few weeks ago on a forum. I've been promoting our efforts a little bit. Hopfuly we'll start to see something come of that. On another topic, I'm in correspondance with several russians at the moment, one of which is coached by Edgar Tatourian, who is mentioned on the Russian page for starting rugby league in that area. The other is Edgars son :) So i'm really excited about the information i'll be able to get from these people. Hopfuly i can convince them to also help edit the articles :). Hi, POds and others, I have started a proper WikiProject on Rugby (both forms). You may consider joining and listing your name on the "Focus on League" section. Thanks DaGizza Chat (c) 04:25, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Perhaps what should happen is that Wikiproject Rugby help define templates, manual of style, category structure and other standards. That is with the aim of creating a consistint feel accross both codes. This should also related to WikiProject Sport and their style of manual and other standards. Then the WikiProject Rugby league, which it will very soon become official, can be made a sister project and will make sure all members enforce the standards proposed by WikiProject Rugby. I think we should keep the projects separate and the editors seperate because there has been several people who in the union crowd who don't like what we're doing. Also, I suggested a while ago that this particular "small" project we have got should start to widen its scope to things like touch rugby and rugby union but many disagreed with that idea. Tell me what you think. POds 11:40, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Good idea. I believe the best purpose for WikiProject Rugby is just as what you said (templates, categories, manual of style etc. also early history before the codes were really separated) Information regarding the players, clubs, competitions/series and national teams should be organised under the separate League and Union projects (I'm planning to begin the Union soon). Also there are many players that have switched codes, another overlap which can be handled by the parent project. Hopefully this should work! DaGizza Chat (c) 11:39, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Fantastic, good to see we agree on this. BTW I later realised, after writing the above, there is no WikiProject Sport. Ok, a rough Aim of WikiProject Rugby seems to be, to define ways of doing things for articles, templates, categories and any other wikiitems that shall be adopted and enforced by child projects, such as this one with the aim of creating a pool of consistent and attractive articles that are easy to find and read. Ok, i think we need to think of writing up a manual of style. Or first, how we're going to organise it. IRC, MSN, Email? We're probably going to need something live, so IRC or IM is the way to go. For anyone with firefox, chatzilla makes a nice yet very simple IRC client. POds 13:23, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

State of Origin
I follow the NRL a fair bit but I'm a bit weak when it comes to Rugby League in the Northern Hemisphere. Is there any State of Origin equivalent in Britain? The table I made btw is just based on the Cricket and AFL wikiprojects. DaGizza Chat (c) 05:12, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- There used to be. I think it was Yorkshire vs .... something close by. I find it hard to believe brits wouldn't get behind all that. Although, they've both got the SL and Challenge Cup, so perhaps it just gives fans too much RL (reason for its scrapping)? POds 11:35, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Aye, there used to be Yorkshire versus Lancashire (Sometimes Cumbria aenterd as well). It ever coaught the imagination, people's loyalty is generally to their city or town, not the county, who boundaries are always getting messed around with. Also remember we had national leagues and cups competions for clubs righht from 1895.
- I'd just like to point out that there was a brief attempt to re-invent the State of Origin in Great Britain, and that there were several games played between Lancashire and Yorkshire over the last few years. Usually this was limited to just one game a season, however, and - as discussed above - rarely caught the imagination of the public. Good games to watch though! I don't recall there being a State of Origin game during the 2005 Super League season (although I'm probably wrong). If I recall correctly, the 2004 game was something of a whitewash for the Yorkshire bunch, avenging the defeat suffered against Lancashire the season before. For some reason the Yorkshire and Lancashire coaches kept being switched - and several times teams were coached by Aussie or NZ coaches! No idea why, when there are good-quality British coaches in Super League! Ah well. I think they've scrapped the State of Origin for 2006 as well, possibly because of the high number of games in the Super League and Challenge Cup and with the Tri-Nations at the end of the season - this time in Aus, if I recall correctly? Point of query - am I right in thinking that the Rugby League World Cup is due to take place in 2006? If so, when is it? DAAdshead 16:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- The RLWC would take place in 2008 in Australia and New Zealand! At the moment, it has been planned for a preseaon start. That is in 2008 before the Super League and the NRL seasons start. The Super League season has been pushed back to accomodate this. NRL clubs from memory do not like the idea of a preseason comp. I'm not sure exactly why, possibly because of injuries to players meaning some top stars may not be able to play for their clubs in the first few weeks. If you want to keep up with rugby league news, try google or the fan site listed on the rugby league article. POds 05:59, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
There is a strong rivalry between Yorkshire and Lancashire on the sports field. Any league forum has a recuring thread started by Lancastrians asking why Leeds / Wakefield / Cas / anybody fans chant 'Yorkshire' when their club in playing a Lancastrian side. Probably because it is easy to chant, Lanky fans would probably do the same but 'Lancashire' is harder to chant.
The origin games unfortunately aren't very popular. I blame the usual league mentality of if something isn't a success right away then scrap it and come up with a worse idea. I think one of the main reasons that origin games have been stuck with is that it a) ignores Cumbria (small population base - imagine NT versus Queensland) b) further promotes the idea that RL is for Northerners only.GordyB 16:04, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Style and Structure
After browsing around Wikipedia sports pages for the last week or so, I've noticed that some are very consistent in style with each other if they're from the same category. The category that strikes me most is the Football (soccer) pages, especially those relating to the World Cup.
I'm most willing to start summaries on each NRL/ARL/NSWRL season sometime soon, and I was wondering whether we should adopt some sort of colour scheme for tables and template boxes at the foot of each page. Any suggestions? mdmanser 14:05, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes this is planned. The Rugby league WikiProject will work with the Rugby WikiProject in defining these, so as to have a consistent feel with Rugby football and union related articles. I'm on a little wikiholiday right now, being christmass and all and i'm sure a lot of people are. I plan to be back in the next day or two. We'll sort something out then. I suppose we'll try and borrow a lot of the structure from those football articles to start with and define our own colours? But the standards will be defined in WikiProject Rugby's manual of style of which we will conform too. 61.68.27.137 aka POds 01:51, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Since we're looking into that, are we also going to put in Squad lists for teams? I vaguely recall several Football team pages listing current players at the bottom of the articles. Even if these take the form of bulleted lists, since very few players seem to have Wikipedia pages of their own?User:DAAdshead 10:21, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- Having viewed the page for Les Catalans and been very impressed (sad, really!) with the Squad List, I have pinched the idea and added one on for Salford. I do think this is a pretty clear way of adding the squad list - maybe we should pick a standard, and maybe this should be it (otherwise I'll have to do it all over again!!!!!)DAAdshead 16:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Logos
Why did the Kangaroos logo get deleted but not the others? And for that matter, why wasn't it considered fair use like the other logos?--dan, dan and dan 06:08, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- It's probably true to say that using the logos on the project page to illustrate our team loyalyites isn't fair use, so I think they probably all should go. Grinner 15:53, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
National Rugby League articles
I'm currently drawing up tables and creating pages for each of the NRL seasons. Perhaps we could make some sort of standard for season summaries, and push an article towards featured article status. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to help out, feel free to do so.
Photos would be greatly appreciated too. mdmanser 13:20, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- If you do, try and use the current way of "providing the standard" by using the Manual of Style (MoS). That is, there is a section on the main page where the MoS has entries for specific articles. One exists for the Rugby league in Nation articles. POds 17:49, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Template suggestion
I have created a talk page template:
Rugby league Stub‑class Low‑importance | ||||||||||

A lot of projects have them. If we started to place them on RL related pages then hopefully other uses will take note of the project. It is also suggested here, to, advertise. Of course, this version is just what I came up with. Its just standard text and a rotated/cropped image that is free-use on the main RL page.
Thoughts?
Forever young 09:01, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- I think that's brilliant, and doesn't even need any changing. Where abouts do we put these templates though? On talk pages or on the top of articles?
mdmanser 11:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Resources
I've been in correspondance with former SARL (South African Rugby League) board member and current RLI (Rugby League Ireland) chairmen, concerning the SARL in the 1990s. I've added copies of the emails to the resources section so that they may act as references or sources of information. I'm hoping that by publishing them in this way, I avoid the "original research" problem of editing articles. That is, wikipedia forbids original research in articles. By publishing them, and working from them, it is hoped that the actual article would be deemed not original because the article shall be derived from anothers work (the sources i've just mentioned). Would this be correct? I have my doubts. Is it something to worry about anyway? POds 17:34, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Naming issues with European Championships
There is currently a problem concerning the name of all individual European Championships.
User:Sam Vimes pointed out that it's confusing because it's actually not mentioned anywhere in the article that it's about rugby league, and because there would have been other European Championships in 1935 (Latvia won the 1935 Eurobasket, for example, while Karl Wazulek won the 1935 European speed skating championships and Rudolf Caracciola the 1935 auto racing championships)
I created most of them in my first days on Wikipedia, so there are those problems. Any suggestions?
Forever young 00:29, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- As I pointed it out, I'd better suggest some alternative, too. My thought is: <year> European Rugby League Championships, and then <year> European Nations Cup of rugby league from whenever it changed its name. Sam Vimes 10:20, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Rugby in France
Personally I think it would be great if a philanthropic French speaker could provide more details on Rugby League in France. In particular, finding stadiums, crowd figures, top players apart from Aubert Puig. It would be great because France is considered one of the four League nations though I know it has declined considerably in the past thirty years.
- First thing's first - I'm assuming you mean "Rugby League" in France :) But the "Rugby" is excusable, since the name for Rugby League is literally "Rugby 13" (Rugby Treize, or Rugby à Treize)
- I have been semi-fluent in French for some time, despite a little bit of rustiness I'm sure I could do something to help out there. ie. any articles you want looked at/translated, etc. Gonzerelli 07:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think French wiki is anywhere near as developed as English wiki. The French page on their own national team is simply a translation of the English one.GordyB 10:39, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
I've started the Rugby Portal. Please join in a unified effort to create the best sport section in wikipedia!

- I've now created two seperate portals...the Portal:Rugby League and the Portal:Rugby Union. I don't know much about RL so, I'll hand it over to you lads to work on...
Fair Use of Player Images
There seems to be a clampdown on Wikipedia:Fair use which is causing much discussion at Wikipedia talk:Fair use. For example, the image I used to illustrate the Steele Retchless article is supposed to be replaced with a free image. Not sure that is actually possible so am disputing the situation in the image discussion page Image talk:Steele Retchless.jpg. Anyone else facing similar issues with replaceable fair use tagging and what action have they taken ? Jbuzza 19:42, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Dally M. Medal
We have 2 articles on the same thing, and there's a lot of conflicting information. Could someone who knows the background behind the medal check both articles at Dally M. - The one without the period (Dally M Medal) is more correct than the other one. The one with the period could well be deleted. Gonzerelli 17:24, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
St George Illawarra
[Discussion summarised, thanks to all who participated]
St George Illawarra Dragons do not have a hyphen (-) in their name. ("Illawarra" is not like the -Sutherland, -Warringah or -Bankstown of other clubs). After some tedious work, St George Illawarra's page has been moved to reflect this, and all links corrected to this new address.
Please ensure that any new pages or links link to the non-hyphenated page.

NSWRL and SL history on NRL page...
I have to admit, I'm not at all crazy about this.
Seriously, from the NRL page, we've previously linked (simply enough) to pages detailing the (pre-1998) history of the NRL, with the NRL's own history covered in its page, and appropriate historical references already being made.
What do you think? I seriously think the recent changes to the NRL page can go jump. Gonzerelli 15:12, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
- The references to Super League arn't very relevant, but perhaps this points to a template listing all the rugby league competitions around the world? I.e. There are more than just Super league and the NRL. Perhaps we could list the major competitions from countries such as Ireland,Lebanon,NZ,France,PNG,Fiji etc and keep that on every page so people looking at the NRL or Super League can look at other nations equivalent competitions. Or we could just remove the links to Super league. POds 08:59, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Players infobox
What's peoples feelings about using info boxes in the players articles? I think there are advantages, such as providing a quick reference. I use info boxes a lot when looking at countries or cities, towns etc. Its possible people will want to visit a players page and quickly be able to tell how many games they've played, tries score etc. Others may see it as not a big deal, too much effort or I don't know :}.
I was going to suggest we simply use the football players infobox but it is probably better that we create one for league, simply because people may want a quick reference to try's or percentage rate at penalty/conversion kicks or actual points etc; Stuff that isn't and doesnt make sense on the football players infobox. In any case Template:Football_player_infobox, should be used as a template for OUR template :).
The task ahead of our selves looks like this. If this is worth while, I'll make the changes neccessary to get the show on the road.
POds 12:10, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah it should be based on the football infobox, but of course more direct towards rugby league. It may be possible to create an infobox which is suitable for both codes of rugby, which would be a great help for both projects. GizzaChat © 07:06, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I Agree. Check this out so far. RL players infobox - Talk page has example. POds 08:33, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
I've made an alternate version at Template:Rugby_player_infobox, which is very closely based on the football box. I've changed some things though, including the wording of the footer and changed "goals" to "points". It looks good too, but I feel a little bad because of how closely based it is on the football box. Do you think that the Football Wikiproject will mind at all? Thoughts so far? A few things need to be addressed too:
- Do we include the full names of clubs (i.e. South Sydney or South Sydney Rabbitohs)?
- Do we count merged teams as two separate identities?
- Do we make Eastern Suburbs/Sydney City/Sydney Roosters and Canterbury/Sydney Bulldogs/Bulldogs different teams or not, and if not, which team name do we use
- Where do we get photos for players, and what type of photo should be used i.e. newspaper clipping, team website portrait or on-field shot?
mdmanser 04:17, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've just been using one I created (see Ettingshausen, Cooper) but i'll use this one now.
- Full names of clubs should be included i guess relevant to the time frame of when that player played rugby league.
- Merged teams should be counted as ONE sole new team.
- No I think 'Eastern Suburbs/Sydney City/Sydney Roosters and Canterbury/Sydney Bulldogs/Bulldogs' should be included as both one single club, the club didn't change or relocate just the name did for a brief period of time.
- I have been getting photo's from TV (see Simmons, Riddell) and some newspaper clippings/front covers of magazines.

Ok, I'm finally interested in making an effort in organising this project. I've made recent sweeping changes that I hope will help us to better be able to formulate and organise our ideas and better still, get people behind them.
Also, I'd like some input into what I've changed and more importantly our Goals. I've put a list of goals already up there. We don't wont airy fairy goals... I'm looking for goals that are measurable. Something that's when done, we can cross it off.
Any Suggestions of goals shall be voted on. I'll set this up with the votes section. POds 13:38, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

- Sorry about not commenting. For Australian Rugby league, www.stats.rleague.com.au is a great resource. Has lists of most of the NRL players since around the 1980s. To follow the cricket and AFL wikiprojects, I think we should find how many players have played for each club in the NRL and English Super League, then start a mass page creation frenzy. Once we have completed all rugby bios, we can improve each one as stubs to a more substantial length. I unfortunately don't know any good site for English rugby league players.
- Also per WP:NN, I think club rugby league players should not yet have a page of their own, not until enough of professional players have been created. GizzaChat © 07:00, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, so you'd be suggesting that our some of our goals, be to have every professional footballer profiled in his own wikipedia article? Thats a large job. How about i suggest a change of topic. Rather than Figuring out a list of goals, what don't we start trying to acheive one of the goals I have already set out. I.e. Organise the project into child projects.
- I think child projects is one of the best ways we could get this project doing all the right things. So lets start suggesting child projects. Going by what you've said, perhaps we need a child project for Players. Perhaps Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby league players? Or Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby league people? POds 08:52, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think it is great to see so much time and effort going into getting this off the ground. I am thinking along your lines too. A page for each and every player would be almost insane. Why not a page for key players at each individual club? Or what about a roster page for each club with a small right up on each player? that way it wont be 1000's of pages insteqad just one page on each clubs key players

Current NRL spoilers
I've noticed that a lot of people are updating pages with very recent NRL scores and other facts and figures. I'm not sure if this applies, but for those who have created the pages or are frequently updating them, perhaps you should read this page. These recommendations may need to be followed for this particular pages. POds 06:48, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think it applies for sports. Stats and other recent info are added quickly in cricket, football (soccer) and australia rules football pages at least. Needless to say, there shouldn't be too much detail for new results etc. There should be a balance between past and present. GizzaChat © 06:50, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- I know the standards don't specifically say sports results, they list just some examples...
- "A spoiler is a piece of information about a narrative work (such as a book, feature film, television show or video game) that may reduce your enjoyment of it by revealing certain plot events or twists."
- The examples are in brackets. It says any piece of information that may reduce ones enjoyment by revealing events or twists. Revealing the score of a game is a spoiler. That is, if the games are updated every round, then it is perhaps a good idea to warn readers.
- POds 08:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- In all honesty anyone on Wikipedia researching Rugby League Season 2006 whilst not wanting to know scores of completed games is making their own mistake. Wikipedia is here to serve as an ongoing encyclopedia of the events of the world - and the more it is kept up to date the better. I might not be making sense, but I just believe that anyone viewing a page such as 2006 NRL Season and complaining of being spoiled is being a little pedantic.
- User:Timmah86 07:10, 21 August 2006 (AEST)
- I agree, if someone is on the internet looking up games that have already played then they are obviously trying to find out results. Wikipedia should be kept up to date as much as posible. This is not a spoiler. Why waste peoples time even trying to make out like it is Byrne 86 (talk) 14:54, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
User:Bradley1956 has added too much information to the article in an "unwikipedia" style. There are a lot of suspicious images and the page is 176 kilobytes long! Most of the information may be even be copyright infringement. Something needs to be done. GizzaChat © 09:18, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Rugby League in 2006
Maybe we could have a page for top flight competitions (SL and NRL), lower grade comps (NL1, NL2, etc) and international competition. Thoughts?--dan, dan and dan 11:04, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Times Digital Archive 2006
- Calls for Researchers
For the month of April, we can access The Times Digital Archive. And there are absolutely TONES of rugby league gems of historical significance. I have found reports on:
- The first meetings of the Yorkshire rugby union on the matters of professionalism
- A report of the formation of the Northern Union and proposed rules such as the removal of the line out, reduction from 15 to 13 players and the introduction of the ROUND ball.
- The first french representative team on english soil.
- The first amature rugby league match in the south of england.
- Many more of historical significance.
I urge everyone, to get on to this archive and search. Most of all, search for what you want. There are many thousands of reports on results.
What i have failed to find is:
- The naming of the Northern Union to the Rugby Football League
- Mentions of the banning of the French Rugby League
- Formation of the Australian and New Zealand Rugby Unions or any other rugby unions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by POds (talk • contribs) 22:54, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- What you have to do
- Go HERE.
- Click on the Thomson Gale Power Search
- Click on the "Times Digital Archive" Link under "Aditional Databases"
Thats pretty much it.

North Queensland Cowboys article problem
User:Bradley1956 has been creating problems with this article. The article is too large, and mainly paraphrases information (at too much length) from the Cowboys website. The problem is that any attempt to fix the problem, or leave a tag to fix the problem, are immediately undone. Furthermore, this user has vandalised the discussion page for the article (by removing any comments that are negative towards it) and other pages (such as the Broncos one, where he removed a large section of text for no reason).
Do anybody have an idea for a course of action? I have recently left a warning tag re: vandalism on his/her discussion page.--dan, dan and dan 12:04, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- Be careful, this guy has done a lot of work. Try to talk to him about it before any changes hav been made. When someone has put work into creating a page of this size, you should talk before you change anything. POds 05:57, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
attacking North Queensland Cowboys article
It appears that some people in the Wiki Project group are stuck on setting out ways of interfering with other peoples articles. The idea of being a wiki project helper is to expand on rugby league articles not have them deleted or removed.
Why is it such a crime to expand club pages to be informative? The Cowboys article for instance has history that expands over 12 years. Why is it such a criminal act to express that and show it?. I have even received congrats for my extensive work on this site and support from other wiki members that more people like myself should be involved in the helping of expanding other club pages.
If people would leave the Cowboys article page alone then I would have enough time on my plate to address other wiki project issues.
I would hate to see anyone else be targeted like I have been. You spend time and effort working night and day to expand and inform then have some wally want it removed or tampered with. INFOMRATION is the key to the future. If we dont record history then who will?.
Long live rugby league. Long live the memory of what happened in the past so that other people can look back on what was history and understand what rugby league was like in the past. Especially the younger generation coming through who did not witness Seuper League or werent around in the "Simply the Best" era.[[Bradley1956 13:01, 14 May 2006 (UTC)]]
Colour Scheme
I've recently updated the NRL page with a blue theme for tables, and I'm thinking of doing the same with the templates Template:Rugby league player infobox and Template:Rugby_league_player_infobox2. The hex colour ive used is #C1D8FF which is slightly different to the one you might see on FIFA World Cup quite a lot. I think we should try and make an effort to have some consistency in rugby league articles in general from now on as well. Any thoughts? --mdmanser 01:38, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I've added a green scheme for one of the tables on National Rugby League. I've though that we should maybe try and stay away from the same sort of theme as Football/Soccer does in their tables, so I've left one table green for the moment to see the reaction. Should we convert all things on the project from blue to green or just stick with blue as it is? --mdmanser 08:34, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Players
I'll start creating the Broncos player profiles, I think I've done all of the Cowboys player profiles, if I haven't could someone inform me? JRA WestyQld2 02:11, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
The page can't be classified as OR because it is all statistics. But it seems POV towards NRL supporters implying AFL is more popular. I think the page was created by a strong AFL supporter. Anyway, I thought that I would need some comments from others, whether or not this page is POV. Another point that should be mentioned is that why is there a comparison just between those two football code leagues? GizzaChat © 08:48, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree totally, you only have to read the the last comment on the talk page to see. However, AFL supporters feel like they always have to prove that their sport is better than any other and the suggestion of the article being turned into football crowd turnouts in all codes for 2006 is a good one and perhaps should be put forward. JRA WestyQld2 11:54, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- You're the one with a chip on your shoulder Westy. If you look at Mike2680's Contributions (the one who created the article), you'll see he is not biased towards NRL or AFL in any way. By the way, AFL is not a sport. I don't understand where you get that idea from. But I agree with you on the addition of A-League crowds as well - and move the article to 2006 Australian football crowds or something similar. Rogerthat Talk 10:42, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Great Britain League Team
Once this team comes to an end, who will all you British supporters be going for in Rugby League? Rogerthat Talk 10:42, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland? JRA WestyQld2 13:03, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- Since the vast majority of rugby league fans in Britain are English, the answer is fairly clear. The trouble is that most English people have some Celtic ancestry and the other three teams are likely to have English born and bred players (Carney aside). League is very much in its infancy in the Celtic countries and they are very unlikely to produce many international quality players, especially as union pays more. If Britain had been the dominant force in rugby league, we could cope but as it is we struggle to compete with Australia and this will make things worse.GordyB 21:10, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

St George worst loss
Apparently the worst loss for St George is 61-0, but Melbourne beat them 72-10 a few years back when Anthony Mundine played...can anyone confirm this and update the St George page?
- 61-0 was with the old scoring system though wasn't it? (Could be horribly wrong) --JRA WestyQld2 04:59, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- St. George Dragons, as a stand-alone entity, did indeed have their worst loss to the hands of Manly in 1994. Since 1999 (and merging to become St George Illawarra Dragons), their worst defeat has been to Melbourne, in round 5 of 2000. The score of this match was 70-10. So:
- As records in the infoboxes only refer to teams in their current form (eg. Wests Tigers' records being since-2000, with a nod to prior history), the correct place for the 70-10 loss would be in the St George Illawarra page, not St George
- In any case, a losing margin of 61 is greater than a losing margin of 60.

Australian National football team
Im trying to find the location of the consensus which meant when you search for "Australian national football team" it goes to the soccer team. I have found several discussions on this issue but none come to a consensus. I am beginning to think that the soccer mafia had more time to put into the discussion, and maybe had more people with the adminastrator tag. I firmly believe that it should be a disambiguation page.
- Plain and simple. What we call Soccer, the rest of the world calls Football. A non-issue really. Try using the proper term "Rugby League" rather than generic shortcut terminology. Gonzerelli 17:47, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree. It is an issue. Australians do not use the term and nor should we be forced to. The proper term is football. Rugby league is just a useful nickname. The Kangaroos have been our national football team for so long that to just claim that another sport is the national football team is absurd. Rugby 666
Rugby League Ball Picture Needed
Do any of you leaguers have both a ball, and a digital camera? If so, would you mind taking a picture of it, uploading it to the wikicommons and share the location of said picture with me? I could really use this image file for some projects I am working on within wikipedia. I'm in the states and have no availability to see league balls (no jokes please). Cheers! Category: Rugby League players
As far as I can see, there is only one category for all rugby league players, past and present, regardless of club and country affiliation. Would it be useful to create separate categories according to club, state, national representations? This would be in accordance to WP guidelines regarding people with multiple affiliations (eg. Robert Duvall both in "actors" and "Oscar Best Actor" categories). It's a time-consuming project, but with incremental efforts it can be done.--Alexio 01:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well the following nations do have a category: Australia[1], England[2], Fiji[3], France[4], Ireland[5], Italy[6], New Zealand[7], Papua New Guinea[8], Scotland[9], Samoa[10], South Africa[11], Tonga[12], Wales[13].
- A few of the clubs have category pages for players also: Broncos[14], Sharks[15], Titans[16], Storm[17], Panthers[18], Cowboys[19], Rabbitohs[20], Dragons[21], Reds[22], Tigers[23].
- The player pages seem to be rather incomplete and some clubs don't have one so that could be something to work on.

Naming
Having looked at Category:International rugby league teams I would have thought that Australian national rugby league team should be at Australia national rugby league team? It was there until October of 2005 when it got moved with no discussion. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 07:09, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- It should be moved to Australian football team as that is what it has been known as for almost a hundred years. Rugby 666
Certain editors are trying to move the article on the Tri Nations rugby union series to Tri Nations in lieu of the current disambiguation page. There was a red link on the American football page so I knocked up an article. In retrospect I think I should have created separate league and union articles. However, though union and league are very different games they look fairly similar when compared to American football. When the two games do differ significantly league tends to be like American football in any case. What do others think? Should I split the articles?GordyB 08:29, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- I believed that that is a bit much to compare those two games. Although some skills are similar, rl is such a different style of game to Yank football that it is a bit invalid. You may as well compare soccer to rl if you ca be bothered, as although many of the skills are different, the games are far more similar. Rugby 666
- Not really. Early forms of American football were extremely similar to rugby league. If you got a random set of soccer players and American footballers and got them to play each other at league the Yanks would win easily. Anyway I've separated the articles so there is a Comparison of American football and rugby league as well as Comparison of rugby union and rugby league.GordyB 22:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
I've added the WikiProject Rugby league category to this template so that all tagged pages appear in the recent changes list. The only thing is: because the talk pages are tagged, not the articles themselves, the effect isn't as useful as it might have been. Does anyone know how to categorise a template stored on talk pages that will list the assciated article in the specified category, rather than the talk page itself? Yorkshire Phoenix (talk • contribs) 14:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Given the number of edits that some of the articles get, I think that is impractical.GordyB 14:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Is this not the raison d'être of the recent changes link, or have I missed something? Yorkshire Phoenix (talk • contribs) 14:47, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Some pages e.g. the main rugby league page often gets changed several times in one day. I've got over three hundred pages on my watchlist. There could be hundreds of pages with the wikiproject tag, we'd be swamped in data. The link to the talk page means that we will now be able to keep up to date with any major changes and was worth installing. Template:Infobox rugby league biography
I just added this infobox for future use for players and coaches. It's pretty much been ripped straight from the Football one, but nevertheless, it seems pretty comprehensive yet concise at the same time. I've added it to a few players so far and it looks great. What does everyone else think of it so far? --mdmanser 10:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
They're trying to have the rugby union series moved to Tri Nations Series now, instead of having that article redirecting to the disambiguation page. The 2006 Tri-Nations haven't even started yet and the union crowd are already trying to steal the name from its still twitching corpse! Yorkshire Phoenix 14:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- It was me wot done it. I don't think I really count as 'union crowd' as I am more of a leaguie but I do watch union on telly. Nothing underhand here otherwise I wouldn't have sent yourself and Grinner a message about the proposed move.GordyB 14:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Bypassing the disambiguation page when there is still a rugby league competition by the same name is a travesty! All I asked for was that we preserve the status quo until after the 2006 Gillette Tri-Nations: it's a couple of months away and then there will be no rugby league competition by that name and RU can have it. Yorkshire Phoenix 06:43, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Im in agreement, if you are going to do it, wait until the competition becomes defunct. --JRA WestyQld2 07:31, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
We are not proposing to bypass the disambig page at Tri Nations, that's been discussed and rejected and if you check back I did not vote for it. Tri Nations Series currently redirects to the rugby union competition anyway, it is not a disambig page. Previously the union competition had a dab link at the top of the page that would take you straight to the league comp. Now it does not. I cannot see how how the situation was improved even from a league POV by moving the page.GordyB 08:43, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- By now you should have seen my comments on that at Talk:Rugby Union Tri Nations. I did redirect Tri Nations Series to the disambiguation page but it was reverted. Yorkshire Phoenix 09:29, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Would you agree that the National Rugby League article should be moved to Australian National Rugby League or Rugby League National Rugby League just because the title of the French rugby union championship translates as 'National Rugby League'? Of course not, it would be nonsense. I'm just trying to get the article a decent name. We cannot use a sponsors name because it has different sponsors in Oz / NZ and SA. I watch National League rugby and buy League Express every week but have never seen 'Tri Nations Series' used for the league comp, is usually 'Tri Nations' or 'Rugby League Tri Nations' or even 'Guillete Tri Nations'. I don't see the problem as long as there is a dab link.GordyB 10:23, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- In my mind, so long as a page could be viewed to be relevant to two separate competitions (particularly when they're in different codes!), there must be a disambiguation note, or page. A good example of this is Super League - one could argue to the death that Super League (Europe) deserves to have the page to itself and no other, but Super League (Australia) clearly has reason enough to stake a claim to the "Super League" article, so a disambiguation page is needed.
- Dare I say, the Union people may feel they have a divine right to the Tri Nations Series article. However, in all fairness, some people here may be bordering on the same thoughts.
- Strongly suggest the use of a disambiguation page, which allows for "Tri Nations Series" in ALL sporting codes to be appropriately acknowledged and linked.
- Gonzerelli 14:09, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Divine right no but in my view articles should be named after the official name of what they are about unless there is a compelling reason not to do so. For me the league comp doesn't officially use 'Tri nations series' without either 'rugby league' or 'Gilette' and usually doesn't use the word 'series' either and so there isn't a major problem of disambiguation if there is a dab link.
- That's my opinion, subsequently it has been pointed out that 'Tri Nations Series' has been used in the media to refer to the league comp and so I can understand why people may have a different opinion. IIRC of the four people who voted on the 'union' side, two of us are also members of this project.
- The strong likelyhood is that there will not be a consensus to get the page moved and so we are looking for an alternate title.GordyB 22:39, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- A DAB page seems to make sense here. Pages that do not refer specifically to league and union in their titles should be disambig. in my opinion. Rugby 666
- Most articles don't really need union or league in their title. There's no league competition called the Heineken Cup or a union competion called Super League (Europe).22:11, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

- The AFL pictures are blatantly breaching copyright in most instances. For instance, the Carlton design is basically a copy of the logo. The only reason why I diagree with your proposal is because your designs are based upon current jersey designs. The current colour pictures used are universal for the entire history of each of club (with one or two exceptions). Also, when I created the current colour designs my main intention was to have consistency between clubs. I don't think the system can work if we do it any differently. --mdmanser 02:34, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with your copyright point, particularly referring to Port Adelaide, etc but it isn't most instances. There is no way that the icons for clubs with stripes, hoops or sashes have copyright issues and they are the majority. What I like about them is they are instantly recognisable as relating to the clubs. The diagonal RL icons are less obvious. In some case such as the Cowboys, the dominant colour on the jersey is barely noticeable on the icon because lesser colours are given greater prominence. I also respect your point about consistency through history, but feel it has been done in an inconsistent way, choosing the original Penrith colours but the most recent Warriors colours. My feeling is, if colours change over time, the most recent colours are appropriate. Finally, I'm not planning to change the colours on the main RL pages without consensus from other contributors but I have used my style jerseys on the Illawarra Rugby League page and may do likewise on other CRL pages when I get around to it. Crico 02:56, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, current colours are retarded, should be updated, and visibily connected to current NRL jersey Joelclintonfan 13:20, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Is there a way to change them? most are either a) outdated, b) wrong shade, c) wrong proportion or d) (as is the case of Wests Tigers) all of the above. I'd do my own, but haven't a clue as to how. Please somebody fix it, it looks crap. Weststigersbob 11:03, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- The colours look fine to me, the only thing I'd change was to design the template so that the middle colour/stripe is half the size it is now. I think that the centre third on the 3 stripes template is too big and when the middle colour is white it almost always takes the attention away from the other two colours, which in most cases are actually the main colours. Th Football thing
I have amended the naming conventions on the page to allow for the appropriate use of the term "football" to describe with the greatest game. Fact is that the term "football" is the common name for the game and there will always be a reference to football in any interview involving a rl cach or player in Australia, so I think my contribution was good and a fair representation. If anyone disagrees with it or wants to improve it. I am a relatively new user and still learning the ropes, so please do not bite my head off if what I did was inappropriate. Thankyou Rugby 666

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:31, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
