Proposing importance assessment changes

edit

I've noticed that this WikiProject is using the "generic" article importance scale, which doesn't seem particularly applicable — not sure someone can be "internationally notable" within the field of "being associated with the San Francisco 49ers, one American football team", for instance, and it provides no clarity on subjects like team seasons or number retirees which currently exist in all four importance categories.

I'm thinking of putting together a new scale based on WikiProject NFL's, roughly taking that and substituting "the San Francisco 49ers" for "the National Football League". That would consistently place team seasons in High-class and 49ers Hall of Fame members in Top-class, for instance, and at the very least avoid awkward situations like Leo Nomellini, who played his entire 15-year career with the 49ers, receiving a Top-class assessment from WP:NFL and a Low from us. Like the NFL's, our goal would be to rank articles according to how important they'd be to someone with no prior knowledge of the 49ers.

Putting this out here on the talk page before doing it because it would require re-assessing quite a few articles — nothing I don't mind doing myself, but given the scope it seems reasonable to ask first (honestly, I'm just hoping anyone watches this page to begin with, really).

Obviously the importance assessment scale isn't really the biggest issue for this WikiProject, but I'd like to start contributing regularly here and that'll at least help me figure out where to start.
