The design of Templates

Three templates have been designed last week, and now a fourth is initiated:

  1. The Project banner {{WikiProject Systems}}, meant to add to article talk pages.
  2. The project banner {{Invite User SYS}}, meant to add to current editors' talk pages to invite them to join the project.
  3. The userbox {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/Member userbox}}, meant for members of this WikiProject
  4. The {{Template:Systems}}, meant in systems articles to explain the structure of the systems domain in Wikipedia.

For the moment this seems like a effective set to begin with - Mdd 20:14, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

The Template:WikiProject Systems

This template is designed 25 april 2007:

{{Template:WikiProject Systems}}

And this template is meant to add to article talk pages. Hereby it can be rated, which is part of the Assessment procedure (where we should talk about later). A question for you Jomathan to look at the first lines, and please tell me, if you have any suggestions about this? - Mdd 21:28, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

The Template:Invite User SYS

First step

This template is designed 25 april 2007.

As a contributor to a related article, I like to let you know about WikiProject Systems, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of the Systems. If you're interested, visit the project page, where you can support this project by joining, take up open tasks or work on articles. Thanks! Mdd 22:53, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

We talked about it [1] and you came with this improvements:

As a contributor to a related article, I would like to let you know about WikiProject Systems, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of systems. If you are interested, please visit the project page, where you can support this project by joining, taking up open tasks, and working on articles. Thank you if you can participate! Jonathan Bowen 15:19, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Now Allan McInnes (thank you) took this task upon him and came up with:

As a contributor to a related article, I would like to let you know about WikiProject Systems, a collaborative effort to improve Wikipedia's coverage of articles relating to systems. If you're interested, please visit the project page, where you can join the project, find open project tasks to take on, and locate systems-related articles in need of editing. Thanks! Allan McInnes 23:47, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

With this exposition, I can see better what's changing. - Mdd 00:38, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Second step

This template is designed 25 april 2007 by Mdd, reviewed 26 April 2007 by Jonathan Bowen and updated 29 April 2007 by Allan McInnes. See also: Archive 4. The current design is:

More feedback is welcome here. - Mdd 19:53, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Still no template for the category infobox

This messagebox is used more then 20 times in field of the WikiProject Systems itselve.

This category contains Systems-related articles within the scope of the WikiProject Systems. Articles are automatically added to this category by using the project banner template.

Maybe I should make this a template also. It further seems to me that this infobox may also be used in systems related categories in Wikipedia? - Mdd 20:47, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

In the Category talk:Chaos theory there is a interesting example of how the Wikiproject Physics solved this. - Mdd 00:20, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

The template:systemstheory-stub

On earlier initiative of Jonathan Bowen let to a new template and cat are {{systemstheory-stub}} and Category:Systems theory stubs, redesigned by ~ Amalas. This is the template:

{{systemstheory-stub}}

What I was asking myselve was, if you can put two stub tags on one page. In the field of Systems this can go happen a lot, I suppose - Mdd 23:24, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

The design of a Template:Systems

The design of an Template:Systems is not only a finishing tough of the new WikiProject Systems. This template can give mayor directions in the Wikipedia field of systems articles... It gives a global view of the field of systems in theory and practice. The first version is made 23:35, 29 April 2007 by Mdd. A first update is made the day after.

Now I made this point an item on it's own, because I would like to have some feed back and further discussion about how to proceed? - Mdd 22:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

There are lot's of examples to compare this template with. For example the Template:Cybernetics and the Template:Sociology. What can we learn from these two examples? - Mdd 11:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Systems - priority syntax

This discussion started about assessment, see here

It is pretty easy to change over: you just have to edit Template:WikiProject Systems. There are several things you can do. The simplest is to get the template to display "low priority" instead of "low importance" on the talk page. The next simplest is to provide the syntax "priority=" as an alternative to "importance=" for the importance/priority parameter. The last thing you can do is rename the categories from "Low-importance Systems articles" to "Low-Priority Systems articles". This requires a bit more work, because you have to edit the template and move the categories as well. You will also need to update the usage notes. Geometry guy 15:08, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for these detailled instruction. Now I had some time to think about it, but I had already doubts from the beginning:
  1. First thing is that I had and have the biggest problems with the word LOW
  2. Changing only the low importance to low priority wins something, but looses something on the consistency if other categories are still called xxx importance.
  3. I found an alternative solution for low importance articles in leaving them unassessed.
This doesn't mean I solved the problem. I'll look into it once more. Thanks -Mdd 21:43, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Good luck thinking about it. For me "low" is solved in two ways: (i) "low" means "relatively low"; (ii) there is a lower importance level than "low", namely, "not worth rating". As for your second point, obviously you must make the change consistently, and use the terms "mid priority", "high priority" and "top priority" as well; it is also much easier to edit the template to do this than to make a special case for "low". Sorry if I misled you: the other categories in mathematics are all named consistently; I was just using "low" as an example.
The problem with your third comment is that "importance unassessed" is an invitation for someone to assess it. Although I have changed "xxx importance" into "xxx-Priority" both for the labels and the categories, I have retained the wording "importance unassessed" and the categories Category:Unassessed importance mathematics articles and Category:Mathematics articles by importance, partly for this reason. Geometry guy 22:17, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
I think a good solution would be if we start using the indication "low" as well. It's not that important to me if it is "low-importance" or "low priority". I do like to have consistency in the assessment categories. Changing these at the moment has a no priority. But thanks for bringing this to our attention. - Mdd 00:15, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Template issues

Hi - I've recently started noticing issues with the sys rating template:

--Jiuguang (talk) 19:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I have noticed this before, but haven't solved this yet. The problem here is in the source code of the Template:Sys rating. There are in fact two problems with this particular case: The template class and the Non Article NA-class articles doens't automatically categorize. I will take a look at it, or ask some help. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 19:29, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
I have solved the first problem. The automatic link to the template class category. The second problem is more complex... or I just don't understand. I will ask for some help. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 19:37, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
User:Geometry guy made some changes. It should work now!? -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 13:14, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Yep, thanks to you both! --Jiuguang (talk) 14:37, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Sys rating redirects to Template:WikiProject Systems

With a lot of help from User:Happy-melon and User:WOSlinker the Template:Sys rating is now redirected to the Template:WikiProject Systems. In the further assessment of articles the {{WikiProject Systems}} needs to be used again, and no longer the "sys rating" code. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 21:47, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
