Wikipedia talk:Wiki World's Fair
Timeblocks listed
editThe timeblocks listed currently are those that synch with the Wikimania online conference, but in practice at our Saturday flagship event we'll be active all day and into the evening probablt at the Queens Night Market, and even when we're synched, we'll only be watching the screens a minority of the time. Pharos (talk) 17:45, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- I've simplified the grid to highlight this aspect of global synching a bit less. Also, we would only be able to synch with the Asia-Pacific day 8-10am on Thursday (which maybe two or three people might be interested in hanging out for), so I figured that shouldn't go in the main grid. Pharos (talk) 18:25, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
@Pharos: I'm pretty sure more than a few people will be interested. Since you removed Thursday's agenda, do we have any informal space to hang out or conduct Edit-a-thon on Thursday morning? OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:03, 1 August 2022 (UTC)- Yes, I'll find an appropriate space for us and anyone else interested on Thursday morning. Pharos (talk) 04:19, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I've reserved a conference room at Brooklyn Creative League in Wallabout, Brooklyn for Thursday morning. We should probably set up a separate RSVP, because I imagine this will be a more limited group. Pharos (talk) 14:45, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Edit-a-thon/Translat-a-thon
editI think we should maybe conceive this more broadly, with translating only a part of it, and including Wikidata as well as Wikipedia. I would suggest a focus on the Panorama of the City of New York and related map stuff, combined with the topics of the Stephanie Dinkins exhibition (which extends into the Panorama). Pharos (talk) 18:30, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- I deleted my Translat-a-thon campaign to clear way for yours. I like your idea better. Aside from Wikidata, we can also focus and foster growth on other projects like Commons, Wikivoyage, etc. Not quite sure if the online campaign is capable of tracking multiple projects across different languages though. OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:02, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- Indeed, the dashboard is capable of tracking across multiple projects and different languages, which is one of its strengths. I hope we can do as many projects as possible. I might even propose to try an experiment with Wikispore for hyperlocalized content, if you or anyone might be up for it. Pharos (talk) 04:16, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
COVID precautions
editWMNYC events require that all attendees are fully vaxxed. I just want to confirm that that requirement be in place for this event. Legoktm (talk) 04:31, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- I have added some relevant language to the event decription. Pharos (talk) 03:53, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- Maybe a little late for the great unvaxxed to find out until they arrive. Why is this still in place when legal requirements have been relaxed or removed? Asking for an unvaxxed friend (that guy in the mirror). Randy Kryn (talk) 13:02, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Randy Kryn: I'm not one of the event organizers, but this is the standard WMNYC policy that's been in place for all the in-person meetups since they resumed. If your friend is immunocompromised and can't get vaccinated, I would suggest speaking to the organizers privately who I expect will be able to make accommodations to ensure they're able to participate safely. Otherwise I would respectfully ask that you participate in Wikimania remotely this year. Legoktm (talk) 17:31, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer Legoktm. Hopefully next year (or next month) those requirements will change and the restrictions removed. Some Wikipedians (I assume more than just my mirror friend) either just don't want to get vaxxed or have had covid and picked up the antibodies that way. I've been talking up having the NorthAmerican Wikiconference in Vegas in late 2023 (Viva WikiVegas!), maybe that can be discussed at the meetings next weekend. Enjoy them! Lightning talks
editSlides or no visual aids and just speaking? Legoktm (talk) 04:33, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, slides should be doable, we'll have a screen on-site (though I think not a huge one). Pharos (talk) 03:59, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- wll there be perhaps any small opportunity for lightning talks on Sunday, for those who can't come on Saturday? just wanted to ask. Sm8900 (talk) 22:15, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Pharos, will there be perhaps any small opportunity for lightning talks on Sunday, for those who can't come on Saturday? just wanted to ask. Sm8900 (talk) 13:16, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Quite possibly, though plans are still fairly up in the air for that day. Pharos (talk) 14:42, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

@Agihard: Thanks for signing up to do a lightning talk! Could you elaborate on your talk's connection to Wikipedia/Wikimedia? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 20:35, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- I was hoping that my talk would inspire Wiki contributors to stick to the original English-language names of places (if they exist) when writing/speaking English, so that those people who are already familiar with these names would not be confused with new transcriptions of native endonyms. Agihard (talk) 21:38, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
Ticket reservation?
editAccording to Queens Museum, visitors need to reserve a free ticket in advance. Do we need to do that? OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:06, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- This shouldn't be necessary, I'll confirm with the museum. Pharos (talk) 16:09, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- We've confirmed the process, just say when you arrive that you're coming for the Wiki event, and sign in at the front desk, Pharos (talk) 22:17, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Lightning talks to start at 3pm
editI've changed lightning talks, so the first session starts at 3pm, rather than 2pm. This is so we can better broadcast the beginning of lightning talks (first ~10 minutes) to the global Wikimania audience. I expect that in practice there will be a bit of an edit-a-thon break in between the two lightning talk sessions at 3pm and 4pm. Pharos (talk) 20:21, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Brunch picnic at 10am outside museum
editThe brunch picnic of quiches will be at 10am, at picnic tables outside, next to the Queens Museum entrance on the Unisphere side of the building. Pharos (talk) 05:02, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Where in Industry City
editWe'll meet in Courtyard 1/2 between 36th and 37th St in Industry City. There is a Bandshall and a tent there. I've put some links on the agenda grid. Note that this is not the same courtyard as Sahadi's. Pharos (talk) 12:26, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- We're at the Bandshell with lots of pastries, and the stage is free!--Pharos (talk) 14:19, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
