Background
editThe progenitor of the clan is considered to be Kim Sŏm-han (김섬한; 金暹漢) who served as a samun paksa (사문박사; 四門博士) during the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo. Kim Sŏm-han was a descendant of Kim Al-chi, the progenitor of the ruling House of Kim of the Silla kingdom. [1][2]
The clan rose to prominence during the Joseon dynasty, and was considered a powerful gentry family between the reigns of King Seongjong until the reign of King Injo. The most influential individual from the Yonan Kim clan during this period was Kim An-ro, who rose to the position of Left State Councillor during the reign of King Jungjong and married his one of his sons to the king's daughter. Another member was Queen Inmok, the consort of King Seonjo of Joseon. She was later deposed as the queen dowager by her step-son, Gwanghaegun, before being reinstated by his successor, Injo. [3]
The 2015 South Korean census recorded 93,382 individuals who were members of the Yonan Kim clan.[4]
