Zia Ul Haq (vice chancellor)

Prof Dr Zia Ul Haq[1] is the youngest Vice Chancellor[2] and Dean Faculty of Public Health at Khyber Medical University, the only public sector Medical University in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. He assumed the charge of Vice Chancellor KMU on 2020 at the young age of 40.[2] He is also president of Pakistan Network of Quality Assurance in Higher Education (PNQAHE).[3]

Education

Prof Dr Zia Ul Haq was born in 1980 in Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. His father was Ex Mechanical Engineer/ MFO in Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His wife is Dr Anjum Naz (Radiologist) and father of four children; Huzaifa Zia (University of London LLB student), Zaina Zia, Zoha Zia and Mustafa Zia. He has five sisters and no brothers.

Zia Ul Haq completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2005 from prestigious Khyber Medical College. He obtained Masters in Public Health from Gandhara University in 2007. Dr Zia completed his PhD Public health from University of Glasgow, UK which was sponsored by Government of Pakistan. He also got FCPS Community Medicine from CPSP, Pakistan, Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Royal College, UK and Diploma in Medical Education [1][4][5]

Academic career

Dr Zia is the first Lecturer of Public Health and Pioneer Faculty at Khyber Medical University. He joined KMU in January, 2009 as a lecturer Public Health and remained lecturer till 2014. In 2014 Dr Zia was promoted as Assistant Professor in Public Health.

He was honored with the Best Young Research Scholar Award[6] in the health sciences category across all health-related departments in the country. He received a cash prize of PKR 150,000 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of public health. The primary goal of this award was to acknowledge the achievements of researchers and to promote a competitive research culture within higher education institutions. The slogan for the 7th HEC Outstanding Research Award was "Celebrating our Champions."[7][6]

Awarded Higher Education Commission, Best University Teacher Award and a cash prize of PKR 100,000 by the Federal Minister for Education & Professional Training in a ceremony held at Islamabad on 21st Feb 2018.

Received University of Glasgow World Changing Alumni Award 2023 for his significant contribution to shaping the healthcare system, health policy and education in Pakistan.

Awarded the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Civil award of Pakistan) by the President of Pakistan. This esteemed recognition honors his exceptional contributions to education, research, and Public Health. He is the only Public Health specialist/educationist/researcher to get this honor in 2024. “This award is a highly restricted and prestigious award only given to those who have done great services to the country. It is one of the most distinguished civil decorations to the civilians who have made outstanding contribution in their respected fields such as literature, arts, sports, medicine, or science, which prompted the recognition of the country on international level. It is given to a person who has accomplished duty beyond what is assigned to him/her. To receive this honour, the individuals are expected to show eminence and be outstanding in providing excellent service in a significant field of activity beyond what they are assigned to." Dr Zia became the first ever Professor of Public Health[8] in 2018 and is currently working as Dean Public Health and Vice Chancellor at Khyber Medical University. He was promted as Meritorious Professor of Public Health (BPS 22) in March 2024. He became the youngest Vice Chancellor[2] in History of Pakistan at the age of 40 years.
