Crash

edit

The bus, which was inadequately maintained, was being operated on the Garhwal-Kumaon route. When the bus was about two kilometres from Marchula, Almora, it lost control and fell over 200 metres down hilly terrain into a river.[8][9] The bus was carrying about 60 passengers at the time of the incident, although the bus was built to hold 42, thus having many standing passengers.[10][11] Many people were reported to have died on the spot after being thrown out of the bus on impact.[12]

Rescue operations

edit

Police from the Nainital district and three teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were dispatched to the site.[13] Rescued passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals. Three critically injured passengers were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced care.[14]

Impact

edit

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.[5]
