The 2024 Srinagar attack refers to a gunfight that broke out between militants and Indian security forces in the Khanyar area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on 2 November 2024. The attack involved an intense firefight that lasted over 12 hours, resulting in two Indian soldiers killed and four others injured. Reports suggest that the militants, allegedly including at least one local, managed to kill two Indian security forces personnel before retreating into a residential area, where they were reportedly cornered by security forces.

Background
editIn recent years, encounters between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir have been intense. The Khanyar encounter marks the first major clash in Srinagar in two and a half years, with the last significant gunfight in the summer capital occurring in April 2022.[1]
The Attack
editThe incident began when security forces, during a cordon and search operation in Khanyar, came under heavy fire from militants. Initial reports indicated that the militants had taken position in a residential house, engaging in an intense gunfight with security personnel. Indian authorities evacuated 12 nearby houses, moving residents to a safer location as the encounter continued.[2]
According to social media posts from pro-militant sources, one of the militants reportedly showed "great bravery," allegedly killing two Indian soldiers and injuring four others.[3] As the encounter intensified, a fire broke out in the house where the militants had taken shelter. Pro-militant sources alleged that Indian forces set the house on fire to dislodge the militants, but it remains unclear who was responsible for the fire.[4]
Aftermath
editThe encounter ended after over 12 hours of fighting. Security forces, including Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF, remained on high alert as they conducted a final search for any remaining militants in the area.[5]
Reactions
editNo militant group has yet claimed official responsibility for the attack.[6]
