History
editBairaskund Mahadev (Vikas Nagar Ghat Chamoli) Ravana's Tapo Bhoomi Bairaskund Mahadev Temple is situated near Vikas Nagar Ghat.[3] This temple is situated on the hill. There is an ancient temple of Mahadev Shiva here, which has been worshipped for centuries. According to the stories, in Treta Yug, Ravana, the great devotee of Shiva, did continuous penance of Mahadev Shiva.[4] This place is also mentioned in religious texts like Ravana Samhita and Kedarkhand Shastra. Mention of this temple started from Treta Yug itself.[5][6]
Even today, a number of devotees stand in queue to have darshan of Mahadev Shiva. There is also a pond in front of the temple, in which the amount of water is quite high.[7] According to the stories, when Mahadev Shiva did not give darshan to Ravana even after Ravana's intense penance, Ravana worshipped Shiva by doing Shivtandav and chanting at this place and pleased Shiva by offering his ten heads to him.[8] At this place, the places where Ravana kept his heads are called Dasmoli.[9][10]
