Taxa of the lowest rank are always included. Higher taxa are included only if endemic. As defined by the WGSRPD, "India" is a smaller geographical region than the political country, and excludes the following areas:

• the Andaman Islands
• Assam – a larger area than the state
• East Himalaya
• West Himalaya
• the Laccadive Islands
• the Nicobar Islands
