Make category more exclusive, as with the consensus established at the CfD for the violence against men category.

edit

I suggest we establish consensus that we should remove the articles not directly related to violence against women, and narrow this category down significantly. Essentially, violence perpetrated against women, which would mean removing things such as Rape from the articlecategory (which is also perpetrated against men), and keeping Raptio, which was perpetrated against women. I don't think this is ultimately helpful. For now we have a fair status quo, which is that these larger ungendered categories like Category:Rape and Category:Domestic violence are headed by both VAW and VAM. I can't think of a really good way to fix this - we could keep Category:Rape only in Category:Gender-based violence for example, but there are over 1,000 articles in the Category:Rape category and some, perhaps many, of them have to do with Violence against women, so it really does make sense as a subcategory, but it also makes sense as a subcategory of Violence against men. It would also be a double standard and violation of NPOV if we only had Rape as a subset of Category:Violence against women, given that a significant minority of rape victims are male. There are larger issues with this category and it's sub-categories - for example, women who are murdered are placed here - even if there is no evidence that the woman was selected for murder based on her gender. So, there is certainly cleaning up that needs to be done to understand the scope - which in my mind should be gender-based violence, e.g. instances of violence where women are targeted for violence because of their gender, the same would applies to the Category:Violence against men category.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 18:49, 25 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
We need to decrease the scope of both VAM and VAW. Rape isn't associated with any one gender. Yet there are specific things that are associated with a specific gender, and that's what I think the category should be composed of. Novato 123chess456 (talk) 21:22, 27 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
123, I appreciate your efforts here, but allow me to suggest that the current environment is far to politically and emotionally charged to think about this issue calmly. I suggest we close this discussion down, and re-open it in a month or so, once passions have cooled, and perhaps hold it elsewhere (no-one watches category talk pages). best, --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 21:59, 27 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Clarifying category inclusion criteria

edit

To make the Violence against women category's inclusion criteria more clear, I propose adding the following info box, which is similar to the info box explaining the inclusion criteria for the category Violence against men [1]

Before boldly editing the category main page, I wanted to first post here to see if there were any objections and to get input.--BoboMeowCat (talk) 14:29, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Because that there were no objections (here or on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Feminism ‎or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gender Studies), Info box was added. --BoboMeowCat (talk) 17:08, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
