The Department of Management Studies (DoMS), Indian Institute of Science, is a university situated in Bangalore, India. Established in 1948, it is recognized as the oldest management school in India. The department provides two program choices for engineering graduates: the Master in Management Studies and the Ph.D. research program.

Courses/Degrees offered

The department currently provides a full-time Master of Management program (M.Mgmt) and a Ph.D. program. Additionally, it offers an External Registration Program (ERP) tailored for industry professionals. Admission to the MBA program is restricted to engineering graduates. The selection process comprises a thorough three-step screening, commencing with a nationally recognized test like CAT/GMAT/GATE, succeeded by a group discussion and personal interview. The M.Mgmt batch size is strictly capped at 16 students.

MBA Program

The MBA program was offered until 2008 and structured as a 21-month, four-term program. Courses were divided into three main categories: hard core, soft core, and electives. Hard core courses aimed to provide students with fundamental skills across various management disciplines, while soft core and elective courses allowed for specialization based on individual interests. In addition to classroom instruction, students were required to engage in mandatory industry projects. At the conclusion of the first year, each student was mandated to complete an industry internship lasting a minimum of eight weeks. In the fourth semester, students undertook industrial projects, often serving as their M.Mgmt thesis project.

Starting from August 2011, the Master of Management Program has been offered, maintaining the same eligibility criteria as the earlier MBA program. The M.Mgmt course is distinguished by its specialization in Technology Management and Business Analytics, addressing contemporary societal and industrial demands. The curriculum emphasizes quantitative and technology-focused content, aiming to develop graduate engineers into capable and socially responsible management leaders for organizations characterized by technology intensity and data-driven operations. The selection process is rigorous, entailing the shortlisting of approximately 450 students from around 3000 applicants, ultimately resulting in the admission of 16 students to the program.

Weekly Seminars

Every Friday, DoMS hosts industry experts who share insights from their personal and professional experiences with students. This platform facilitates interaction and learning opportunities for aspiring leaders to gain from the expertise of current industry practitioners. Each seminar emphasizes Contemporary Technology Management or Business Analytics issues, exploring relevant solutions within these domains.

COSMAR

COSMAR, the Consortium of Students in Management Research, is an annual International Research Consortium organized by the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Originally established as the National Doctoral Consortium (NDC) in 2000, COSMAR has undergone subsequent evolution. It remains a student-driven academic event, operating solely on a not-for-profit basis.

Over its previous editions, COSMAR has garnered participation from esteemed institutions across the country, including but not limited to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur, the Xavier Institute of Management (XIM) Bhubaneswar, and the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC).
